Cherreads

Chapter 24 - The Saint’s Gauntlet

The Floating Pagoda was no longer a sanctuary of light; it was a slaughterhouse of red static.

As the "Final Harvest" protocol engaged, the golden pillars of the High Altar began to weep a thick, viscous crimson mana. The sky through the open arches had turned the color of a fresh wound. Thunder didn't roll; it screamed, a digital screech that signaled the system's collapse.

"The Sovereign belongs to the Saint," Erikson declared. His voice was a distorted melody, echoing through the halls. He raised a single finger, and a wall of solidified "Holy Law" slammed down, a translucent barrier of golden geometry that bifurcated the grand hall.

Kaizer was trapped on one side with Erikson. His Abyssal Guard and Rin were on the other.

"But the Jackal..." Erikson's eyes glowed with a terrifying vacancy behind his weeping-angel mask. "The Jackal is hungry for the blood of traitors. Let us see if your 'Shadows' can survive the bite of a cornered God."

On the other side of the barrier, Anubis shed his funerary silks. His jackal-head elongated, his fur turning into coarse black needles that sizzled with divine heat. His golden armor fused directly into his muscular frame, becoming a jagged exoskeleton. He was no longer a judge; he was a predator whose leash had been cut.

"Give me the Ghost!" Anubis howled, his voice a thousand scratching claws. "Give me Takeshi Sato, or I will turn your souls into the very stones of this floor!"

Phase I: The Fortress and the Sniper

Anubis lunged. He didn't run; he blurred, a streak of black fur and golden sparks moving at Mach 2. His target was Takeshi, the flickering "Core Node" huddled behind the Guard.

"Dread-Fortress: ABSOLUTE DEFENSE!"

The Sentinel—now standing ten feet tall in his evolved obsidian armor—slammed his castle-gate shield into the marble. The impact sent a shockwave that shattered the surrounding lotus fountains. Anubis hit the shield like a meteor. The sound was a deafening CRACK of divinity meeting the Abyss.

Anubis didn't bounce off. He snarled, his claws glowing with "Soul-Fire," and began to literally tear at the obsidian shield, his fingers sinking into the metal.

"Raiden! Eye of the Storm!" Vane roared, anchoring his feet into the stone.

From a high rafter, Raiden adjusted the dial on his Shattered Ankh rifle. The God-Eater weapon hummed, its barrel glowing with a sickly violet light. He pulled the trigger.

THOOM.

A bolt of black lightning streaked through the red mist. It struck Anubis in the center of his back. The 2nd Disciple shrieked as the "God-Eater" energy short-circuited his divine nervous system. His muscles locked, and for a split second, the "God" was paralyzed.

Phase II: The Screams of the Killing Fields

"Mina! Keep him grounded!"

Mina stepped forward, her silver throat-guard vibrating. She didn't just scream; she channeled the collective agony of every monster Kaizer had ever devoured.

"Sovereign Requiem!"

The sound waves were visible, rippling through the air like distorted glass. They slammed into Anubis, pinning him to the cratered floor. Every time he tried to shift back into his "Ghost" form to escape, the frequency shattered his mana-signature, forcing him to remain flesh and blood.

Anubis roared, the sound muffled by Mina's wail. He slammed his palms onto the ground, and a massive, spectral scale appeared above the battlefield.

"JUDGMENT OF THE SCALES!"

A crushing gravity descended. The weight of "Divine Sin" tried to force the Guard to their knees. Kuro and Sera gasped, the air being squeezed from their lungs.

"My only sin," Vane grunted, his muscles bulging as he forced himself to stand, "is that I didn't kill you sooner, dog!"

The Iron Titan ignited his Abyssal Heat. His skin turned into a living furnace of white-hot iron. He walked through the gravity field, the marble melting beneath his boots. He reached the spectral scale and, with a roar that shook the Pagoda, ripped the divine construct out of the air and crushed it between his palms.

Phase III: The Ten-Second Oracle

Anubis was desperate. He gathered the red static of the "Final Harvest" into a sphere of concentrated destruction.

"Sera! Now!" Kuro shouted.

Sera fanned her Blood-Oracle cards. Her eyes turned a hollow white as she saw the immediate future. "Left flank, three meters! He will lunge in 0.4 seconds!"

Kuro didn't hesitate. He trusted the vision. He vanished into a shadow and reappeared exactly where Sera predicted. Using his Void-Glass daggers, he performed a "Spatial Sunder." He didn't just cut Anubis; he erased the space where Anubis's right wing and shoulder were.

The Disciple's golden blood sprayed across the white lotuses—liquid sun hitting the floor. Anubis collapsed, his physical form leaking essence like a punctured lung.

Phase IV: The Execution of the Sun

"That's enough," a voice rang out—cold, sharp, and majestic.

Rin Kusanagi stepped through the mist. She had been silent, waiting for the opening. Her sword was already drawn, the White-Violet flames roaring three feet high off the edge of the blade.

Anubis looked up, his jackal-eyes wide with a terrifying realization. "The... The Sun... Amaterasu's light..."

"You told me my fire belonged to the Sun, Jackal," Rin said, her eyes locked on his. "You told me I was just a vessel for a God who didn't even know my name."

She raised her blade. The Eclipse Embers intensified, turning the air around her into a vacuum.

"You were wrong. My fire belongs to me."

She swung. The strike was a horizontal arc of Conceptual Erasure. Anubis tried to block it with his golden arm-guards, but the White-Violet flames ignored the metal. They ignored his "Disciple" rank. They ignored his "Holy" buffs.

The flames passed through Anubis's neck as if he were made of nothing but bad memories.

The Jackal stood still for a heartbeat. He looked at Rin, then at the barrier where Kaizer stood, then up at the red sky. Then, his body began to dissolve—not into light, but into grey, forgotten ash.

[SYSTEM ALERT: 2nd DISCIPLE 'ANUBIS' HAS BEEN DELETED.] [CORE FRAGMENT ABSORBED: THE JACKAL'S ESSENCE.]

The Final Standoff

The "Holy Law" barrier shattered. The golden geometry dissolved into dust as the Disciple who powered it died.

Kaizer Gold stepped over the pile of Anubis's ash. His suit was untouched, his expression a mask of cold Sovereignty. He walked toward the High Altar, where Erikson stood holding a glowing golden needle—the System Override.

"The Jackal was a tool," Erikson said, discarding his weeping-angel mask. His face was a porcelain nightmare of perfection. "But the 'Final Harvest' is at 95%. In sixty seconds, this Pagoda will drop. Tokyo will become the first 'Divine Data Hub' for the Pillars. And you... you will be the first sacrifice."

Kaizer raised the God-Slayer's Edge. The obsidian blade didn't just hum; it screamed with the voices of a thousand devoured monsters.

"I've spent my whole life being told I'm a 'Zero,' Erikson," Kaizer said, his shadow expanding until it swallowed the entire High Altar. "It's time I showed you what happens when you multiply everything by zero."
