Chapter 10 - Chapter 9 — Eyes on Him

The hall felt different the next day.

Not quieter.

Not louder.

Just—

Aware.

Kaizen noticed it the moment he stepped inside.

Conversations didn't stop.

But they shifted.

Lower.

Controlled.

Directed.

"…that's him."

"…the E-rank?"

"…no way."

"…then why did they isolate him?"

Whispers.

Not hidden.

Not subtle.

Just quiet enough to pretend they weren't meant for him.

Kaizen didn't react.

He walked forward like nothing had changed.

Because for him—

Nothing had.

But for everyone else—

Something had.

Nyra stood near the edge of the hall.

Watching.

Not smiling this time.

Not teasing.

Just—

Observing.

"You're late."

Her voice was calm.

But her eyes were sharp.

"I'm on time."

"…barely."

A pause.

Then—

"…what did they do to you?"

Kaizen didn't answer immediately.

"…training."

Nyra's gaze narrowed slightly.

"…that's not what I meant."

Silence.

Kaizen met her eyes.

"…then ask something clearer."

For a second—

She almost smiled.

"…fine."

A step closer.

"…why are you different now?"

That question stayed.

Not accusatory.

Not curious.

Just—

Direct.

Kaizen thought about it.

About the line.

About the control.

About that presence.

Watching.

Waiting.

"…I'm not."

Nyra didn't look convinced.

"…then prove it."

Before Kaizen could respond—

"Everyone to the central area."

The instructor's voice echoed across the hall.

Instant silence.

Students moved quickly.

Forming a wide circle.

Tension filled the space.

"…what's this?"

"…assessment?"

"…already?"

The instructor stepped forward.

Expression unreadable.

"…today we evaluate control."

A ripple of reactions.

"…not power."

That changed things.

Because power could be measured.

Control—

Couldn't.

"…one by one."

He gestured to the center.

"…you will demonstrate your ability."

A pause.

"…failure is expected."

Light laughter.

Nervous.

Uneasy.

The first student stepped forward.

Energy formed.

Bright.

Strong.

But unstable.

It lasted—

Two seconds.

Collapsed.

"…next."

Another stepped in.

Longer this time.

Three seconds.

Then—

Break.

"…next."

The pattern continued.

Power wasn't the issue.

Control was.

And most of them—

Didn't have it.

Nyra stepped forward.

No hesitation.

Energy gathered around her hand.

Smooth.

Refined.

She held it.

Stable.

Five seconds.

Six.

Seven.

Then released it cleanly.

No collapse.

No backlash.

"…good."

The instructor nodded once.

A few impressed murmurs followed.

Then—

"…next."

Silence.

No one moved.

Then—

Kaizen stepped forward.

Whispers returned instantly.

"…seriously?"

"…this will be quick."

"…watch him fail."

Kaizen ignored all of it.

He reached the center.

Stopped.

Raised his hand.

No buildup.

No dramatic surge.

Just—

Focus.

The line formed.

Thin.

Sharp.

Stable.

Immediately.

No flicker.

No delay.

The air around it bent slightly.

A faint distortion—

Clearer than before.

Silence fell.

Not gradually.

Instantly.

Because this—

Was different.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Five.

Eight.

Still holding.

Still stable.

Nyra's eyes widened slightly.

The instructor didn't move.

Didn't speak.

But he was watching—

Carefully.

Ten seconds.

The line extended.

Not by much.

But enough.

Controlled.

Precise.

Intentional.

Then—

Kaizen released it.

Clean.

No collapse.

No backlash.

Nothing.

Just—

Gone.

Silence remained.

Heavy.

Uncertain.

"…what was that?"

"…that's not E-rank."

"…no way…"

The whispers returned.

But different now.

Less mocking.

More—

Uneasy.

Nyra stared at him.

Not questioning anymore.

Not doubting.

Understanding.

"…you lied."

Kaizen glanced at her.

"…no."

A pause.

"…I just didn't explain."

The instructor finally spoke.

"…Kaizen."

Silence sharpened.

"…see me after this."

No praise.

No reaction.

But that—

Was enough.

Because everyone understood what it meant.

Something had changed.

And now—

Everyone could see it.

And far beyond—

That unseen presence stirred again.

Closer.

More focused.

Because now—

He wasn't just learning.

He was being noticed.

By everyone.

Including it.
