Chapter 16 - Chapter 15 — The Pull

Sleep didn't come easily.

It wasn't fear.

It wasn't pain.

It was—

Awareness.

Kaizen lay still, eyes open.

The room was dark.

Silent.

But not empty.

He could feel it.

Faint.

Distant.

But constant.

That presence.

"…still there."

Nyra's voice came from the other side of the room.

"…you didn't sleep either."

"…no."

A pause.

"…you feel it too?"

Nyra hesitated.

"…not like you."

Silence settled again.

But it didn't last.

Because the moment Kaizen closed his eyes—

It changed.

The darkness deepened.

Not natural.

Not normal.

Something shifted.

The space around him—

Pulled.

His eyes opened instantly.

"…it's starting."

Nyra was already on her feet.

"…what is?"

Kaizen didn't answer.

Because this time—

It wasn't outside.

It was—

Inside.

His breath slowed.

Not by choice.

By force.

The world around him faded slightly.

Edges blurring.

Sound dulling.

"…Kaizen."

Nyra's voice felt distant.

Too distant.

"…don't—"

The pull increased.

Stronger.

Clearer.

Not random.

Not chaotic.

Directed.

Calling him.

The same feeling.

From the crack.

From the line.

But now—

There was no barrier.

Kaizen stood up slowly.

"…I need to see it."

Nyra stepped forward immediately.

"No."

Her voice was firm.

"…you don't even know what it is."

"…I need to understand it."

"…or it understands you first."

That stopped him.

For a second.

But only a second.

Because the pull—

Didn't stop.

It intensified.

The room distorted slightly.

Barely visible.

But real.

Nyra felt it now.

"…this isn't external."

"…no."

Kaizen's voice was quieter now.

"…it's syncing."

That word again.

But this time—

Different.

Deeper.

More dangerous.

His hand rose.

The line formed instantly.

No delay.

No instability.

Perfect.

The air bent sharply around it.

Stronger than before.

The room reacted.

The pressure increased.

Nyra's energy surged in response.

"…stop."

But Kaizen didn't hear it.

Not fully.

Because his focus—

Was somewhere else.

The line extended.

Not outward.

Inward.

Toward himself.

The distortion deepened.

Then—

For a moment—

Everything aligned.

The room.

The energy.

The pull.

And Kaizen—

Felt it.

Not as pressure.

Not as force.

But as—

Presence.

Clear.

Defined.

Watching.

"…so it's you."

The words left him before he realized it.

Nyra froze.

"…who?"

Kaizen didn't respond.

Because in that moment—

He wasn't fully there.

The connection tightened.

Just a little more—

And—

Nyra moved.

Fast.

Her hand grabbed his arm.

Energy surged.

Sharp.

Disruptive.

The line shattered instantly.

The distortion collapsed.

The pressure vanished.

Kaizen staggered slightly.

Breathing uneven now.

"…you almost lost yourself."

Nyra didn't let go.

Her grip firm.

Real.

Grounding.

Kaizen steadied himself.

"…no."

A pause.

"…I almost understood it."

Silence.

Nyra looked at him.

Different now.

More serious.

"…that's worse."

Kaizen didn't argue.

Because deep down—

He knew.

That presence—

Wasn't just watching anymore.

It was—

Reaching.

And next time—

It might not stop halfway.
