Chapter 29 - CHAPTER 28 — The Emperor’s Past Revealed

The next morning, the palace was wrapped in a soft mist.

Lin Yue walked through the Moonlit Courtyard, her thoughts still lingering on the emperor's words from the night before.

"You matter to me."

The words echoed in her mind like a quiet drumbeat.

Xiao An approached with a tray of tea.

"My Lady, you barely slept."

Lin Yue smiled faintly. "I'm fine."

But she wasn't.

Not in a bad way — just… unsettled.

Changed.

Before Xiao An could say more, a eunuch arrived.

"Noble Lady Lin, His Majesty requests your presence in the Hidden Orchid Pavilion."

Lin Yue blinked. "The Hidden Orchid Pavilion?"

Xiao An gasped. "That's where he goes when he wants to be alone!"

Lin Yue's heart tightened.

Why would he call her there?

She followed the eunuch through winding corridors until they reached a quiet, secluded garden filled with orchids of every shade.

The emperor stood alone beneath a willow tree, hands clasped behind his back.

He turned when he heard her footsteps.

"You came."

Lin Yue bowed. "You summoned me."

He motioned for her to walk with him.

They moved slowly through the garden, the air thick with the scent of orchids.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then—

"Lin Yue," he began softly, "there are things about my past you should know."

Lin Yue's breath caught.

He had never spoken like this before.

She nodded. "I'm listening."

He exhaled, as if releasing a weight he'd carried for years.

"When I was younger, I trusted too easily. I believed affection was simple. Pure. I thought loyalty came naturally."

Lin Yue watched him quietly.

"I was wrong," he said. "Very wrong."

They stopped beside a pond, the water reflecting the pale morning light.

The emperor continued, voice low.

"There was someone I cared for deeply. Before Xue. Before the harem became what it is now."

Lin Yue's heart tightened — not with jealousy, but with understanding.

"She betrayed you," Lin Yue said softly.

He looked at her, surprised. "How did you know?"

"Your eyes," she said. "They change when you speak of the past."

A faint, sad smile touched his lips.

"Yes. She betrayed me. Not for love, but for power. She aligned herself with ministers who wanted to control the throne. She used my affection as a weapon."

Lin Yue felt a quiet ache in her chest.

"And when I discovered it," he said, "I swore I would never let myself be vulnerable again."

He looked away, his voice barely above a whisper.

"I closed my heart. I stopped trusting. I stopped feeling."

Lin Yue stepped closer, her voice gentle.

"And now?"

He turned to her, eyes softening in a way that made her breath tremble.

"Now," he said, "I find myself opening again. Against my will. Against my better judgment."

Lin Yue swallowed. "Because of me?"

"Yes," he said simply. "Because of you."

Silence settled between them — warm, fragile, real.

Lin Yue spoke softly. "I'm not her. I don't want anything from you."

"I know," he said. "That's what frightens me."

She blinked. "Frightens you?"

He stepped closer, his voice low.

"You don't ask for power. You don't demand attention. You don't scheme. And yet… you've become the person I think about first in the morning and last at night."

Lin Yue's heart raced.

He continued, "You make me want to trust again. To feel again. And that is the most dangerous thing of all."

Lin Yue looked up at him, her voice trembling.

"I won't hurt you."

He reached out, brushing her cheek with the back of his hand — a touch so gentle it made her eyes sting.

"I believe you," he whispered.

A magnolia petal drifted between them, landing on the surface of the pond.

The emperor's voice softened even further.

"Lin Yue… stay by my side. Not because of your title. Not because of the palace. But because I need you."

Her breath caught.

And for the first time, she answered without hesitation.

"I will."

His eyes warmed — deeply, quietly, beautifully.

And in that moment, something shifted between them.

Not passion.

Not politics.

Something deeper.

Trust.

Later That Afternoon

Xiao An rushed to her.

"My Lady! You look… different."

Lin Yue touched her chest lightly.

"I understand him better now."

Xiao An blinked. "Understand who?"

Lin Yue looked toward the Hidden Orchid Pavilion, her voice soft.

"The man behind the emperor."

And she knew:

This was the beginning of a bond strong enough to change the palace.

Strong enough to change her life.

Strong enough to lead to everything that would come next.
