Chapter 32 - CHAPTER 31 — The Empress Dowager Intervenes Again

The morning after the investigation was announced, the palace buzzed with whispers.

Servants walked faster.

Concubines spoke in hushed tones.

Even the guards seemed more alert.

Lin Yue felt the shift the moment she stepped out of her chamber.

Xiao An hurried to her side.

"My Lady… everyone is talking about you."

Lin Yue adjusted her sleeve calmly.

"They always talk."

"But this time," Xiao An whispered, "they're wondering if you'll fall."

Lin Yue paused.

Then she smiled faintly.

"Let them wonder."

Before Xiao An could respond, a eunuch approached and bowed deeply.

"Noble Lady Lin, the Empress Dowager requests your presence. Immediately."

Xiao An's eyes widened.

"Again?"

Lin Yue exhaled softly.

"Let's go."

The Phoenix Hall

The hall was brighter today, sunlight streaming through the tall windows.

But the atmosphere was no less heavy.

The Empress Dowager sat at the center, her posture regal, her expression unreadable.

The Empress stood beside her, hands folded neatly.

Noble Consort Xue was nowhere to be seen.

Lin Yue bowed.

"Greetings, Your Majesty."

The Empress Dowager studied her for a long moment before speaking.

"Lin Yue," she said, "do you know why I summoned you?"

Lin Yue kept her gaze lowered.

"To hear the results of the investigation?"

"No," the Empress Dowager said. "Not yet."

Lin Yue lifted her head slightly.

The Empress Dowager continued,

"I summoned you because I want to see how you stand under pressure."

Lin Yue's heart tightened — but she remained calm.

The Empress Dowager rose from her seat and walked toward her slowly.

"You have been targeted," she said. "You have been slandered. You have been tested."

Lin Yue bowed her head.

"Yes, Your Majesty."

"And yet," the Empress Dowager said, "you remain composed."

Lin Yue looked up, surprised.

The Empress Dowager's eyes softened — only slightly.

"Most women in this palace would have cried. Or begged. Or accused others. But you… you stand still."

Lin Yue swallowed.

"I only do what I can."

"That," the Empress Dowager said, "is why you are dangerous."

Lin Yue blinked.

"Dangerous?"

The Empress Dowager nodded.

"You do not fight loudly. You do not scheme. You do not panic. You simply endure — and in enduring, you rise."

She stepped closer, her voice lowering.

"Do you know how rare that is?"

Lin Yue shook her head.

"No, Your Majesty."

The Empress Dowager studied her face carefully.

"You remind me of someone," she said quietly.

Lin Yue frowned.

"Who?"

The Empress Dowager turned away, her expression unreadable again.

"A woman who once stood where you stand now. A woman who rose far higher than anyone expected."

Lin Yue hesitated.

"Was she… favored?"

"Yes," the Empress Dowager said. "And hated. And feared."

Lin Yue's breath caught.

"What happened to her?"

The Empress Dowager looked over her shoulder.

"She survived."

Lin Yue felt a shiver run through her.

The Empress Dowager returned to her seat.

"Lin Yue," she said, "I will tell you something few know."

Lin Yue bowed.

"I am listening."

The Empress Dowager's voice softened.

"The palace does not destroy the loudest women. It destroys the weakest."

Lin Yue's eyes widened.

"And you," the Empress Dowager said, "are not weak."

Silence filled the hall.

Then the Empress Dowager waved her hand.

"You may go. The investigation will conclude soon. Stand firm."

Lin Yue bowed deeply.

"Yes, Your Majesty."

As she turned to leave, the Empress Dowager added:

"And Lin Yue… do not let Noble Consort Xue see your fear."

Lin Yue paused.

"I have none," she said softly.

The Empress Dowager's lips curved — the faintest hint of approval.

"Good."

Outside the Hall

Xiao An rushed to her.

"My Lady! What did she say?"

Lin Yue walked slowly, her mind still processing the Empress Dowager's words.

"She warned me."

"About Xue?"

"No," Lin Yue said quietly. "About myself."

Xiao An blinked.

"I don't understand."

Lin Yue looked up at the sky, her voice steady.

"She said I'm not weak."

Xiao An smiled brightly.

"You aren't!"

Lin Yue shook her head.

"It wasn't a compliment."

Xiao An's smile faded.

"Then what was it?"

Lin Yue exhaled.

"A reminder."

Later That Night

The emperor arrived, his expression tense.

"The Empress Dowager summoned you."

"Yes."

"What did she say?"

Lin Yue looked at him, her voice soft but firm.

"She said I'm becoming someone the palace should fear."

The emperor's eyes softened.

"You're becoming someone the palace should respect."

Lin Yue lowered her gaze.

"I don't want to be feared."

He stepped closer, lifting her chin gently.

"You don't have to want it," he said. "But strength always frightens those who rely on weakness."

Lin Yue swallowed.

"Then I will be strong."

He smiled — proud, warm, quietly relieved.

"You already are."

As he left, Lin Yue stood beneath the magnolia tree, the lanterns swaying gently above her.

The Empress Dowager's words echoed in her mind.

"You are not weak."

For the first time, Lin Yue believed it.

And she knew:

The palace was changing.

And so was she.
