The Moonlit Courtyard lived up to its name.
Soft lanterns hung from the eaves, glowing like captured stars. A small pond reflected the moonlight, its surface still and silver. The air smelled faintly of night-blooming jasmine.
Lin Yue stood in the center of her new residence, taking it all in.
Xiao An spun in a circle, eyes wide.
"My Lady… this place is beautiful! It's bigger than the entire servants' wing!"
Lin Yue smiled faintly. "It's peaceful."
"Peaceful?" Xiao An laughed. "It's practically a dream!"
But Lin Yue didn't answer. Her gaze drifted to the far corner of the courtyard, where a single magnolia tree stood in full bloom.
White petals glowed under the moonlight.
It reminded her of the jade hairpin in her hair.
A gift.
A promise.
A burden.
The Servants Arrive
A line of palace maids and eunuchs entered, bowing deeply.
"Noble Lady Lin, we have been assigned to your service."
Lin Yue nodded. "Thank you. Treat each other with respect, and I will do the same."
The servants exchanged surprised glances — kindness was rare in the harem
One maid stepped forward. "My Lady, would you like us to prepare your bath?"
Lin Yue hesitated. "Yes… thank you."
As they left, Xiao An whispered, "They already like you."
Lin Yue shook her head. "They don't know me yet."
"But they will," Xiao An said proudly. "And they'll see you're different."
Lin Yue touched the jade seal hidden in her sleeve.
Different could be dangerous.
The Bathhouse
Steam curled through the air as Lin Yue stepped into the bathhouse. The water was warm, scented with lotus petals. She sank into it slowly, letting the heat ease the tension in her shoulders.
For the first time since entering the palace, she allowed herself to breathe.
But peace never lasted long.
A soft knock sounded.
"My Lady," a maid said from outside, "His Majesty has arrived."
Lin Yue's heart skipped.
She rose from the bath, dried quickly, and dressed in a simple pale robe. Her hair was still damp when she stepped into the courtyard.
The emperor stood beneath the magnolia tree, hands clasped behind his back. Moonlight traced the edges of his silhouette, making him look almost unreal.
He turned when he heard her footsteps.
"You're settling in," he said.
"Yes," Lin Yue replied softly. "It's… beautiful."
He walked toward her, his gaze warm. "It suits you."
Lin Yue lowered her eyes. "Your Majesty, you didn't need to come tonight."
"I wanted to," he said simply.
Her breath caught.
He reached out, brushing a damp strand of hair from her cheek. "You're quiet."
"I'm thinking," she said.
"About what?"
Lin Yue hesitated. "Everything has changed so quickly."
The emperor's expression softened. "Does it frighten you?"
"No," she said honestly. "But it feels… heavy."
He stepped closer. "Power is always heavy. But you don't carry it alone."
Lin Yue looked up at him. "I don't want to disappoint you."
"You won't," he said. "You never have."
A soft breeze rustled the magnolia petals above them. One drifted down, landing gently on Lin Yue's shoulder.
The emperor brushed it away with a tenderness that made her heart tremble.
"You belong here," he murmured.
Lin Yue swallowed. "Do I?"
"Yes," he said. "And soon, everyone will know it."
After He Left
The emperor stayed only a short while, leaving before the lanterns burned low.
Lin Yue stood alone beneath the magnolia tree, staring at the moon's reflection in the pond.
Xiao An approached quietly. "My Lady… are you alright?"
Lin Yue nodded. "Yes."
But her voice was soft, thoughtful.
Tonight was her first night in the Moonlit Courtyard.
Her first night as Noble Lady Lin.
Her first night truly standing in the emperor's world.
And as she looked at the moonlit water, she whispered to herself:
"I will not be afraid."
The petals drifted around her like silent blessings.
Or warnings.
