"Oh, that really hurts! Sorry, Gwe... Wanda, I really didn't mean to! I was just trying to catch you... I really didn't think my hand would end up touching your... I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I didn't mean for that to happen..."
Clutching his slightly swollen cheek, Peter was so flustered that he was practically tripping over his own words.
After all, in situations like this, the one who ended up wronged was always the woman. Peter truly had not done it on purpose, but that did not change the fact that it had happened. Facts spoke louder than excuses, and Peter had never been good at talking his way out of things anyway.
"If you want, you can just hit me again..."
"You think I don't want to?!"
The moment Gwen had been touched like that, her whole body had gone numb like she had been shocked. But the second she remembered that it had not been Peter, a strange sense of humiliation and grievance welled up inside her. Right now, she wanted nothing more than to tear this rude jerk to pieces.
But what good would that do?
He had meant well.
Still, his image in her heart had definitely dropped by at least one level.
At that very moment, the enraged Fangtooth Harrison tore away the webbing stuck over his eyes. Seeing Peter still turned away from him and apologizing nonstop to Gwen, he charged forward with raw brute force.
Peter's spider-sense went off.
His body stiffened for a split second before reacting at once. He spun around, instantly fired two electric web lines, and unleashed a one-hundred-thousand-volt surge.
But Fangtooth Harrison's body was covered in a slick layer of mucus and fine scales that insulated him completely. Not only was there no shocking effect, it did not even seem to hurt him at all.
"I'm going to tear you apart completely, you clown in a skin-tight suit and mask!"
Fangtooth Harrison grabbed the two web lines stuck to his chest and gave them a savage yank.
The force of the pull sent Peter flying straight toward him. By the time Peter reacted, all he saw was a fist the size of a pot slamming into his head.
The next second, he spun through the air and crashed hard onto the hood of a car. The metal caved in, the windshield shattered, and broken glass scattered across him.
Peter felt like he had just been hit by a thirty-ton truck.
His whole body felt like it was coming apart.
And something in his lower back had twisted the wrong way, sending sharp pain through him.
"Oh... My back!!!"
Clutching his aching lower back, Peter jumped down from the wrecked car, his gaze gradually turning cold.
This was a deeply violent personality.
That meant dealing with a monster like this would require stronger methods.
"You bastard. If I don't put a little dirt in your eye today, then my back suffered for nothing."
The icy tone in Peter's voice made his anger obvious.
Right now, he only had one-fifth of Tobey Maguire Spider-Man's peak strength, so he really could not go toe-to-toe with this guy physically. But that was not all he had. He still had a few special little toys. And beyond that, he had not even used the system's skin abilities yet.
He was absolutely going to make this freak pay.
While Gwen relied on quick footwork and kept Fangtooth Harrison occupied, Peter quietly pushed both palm-mounted electromagnetic pulse devices into maximum overload mode and began charging them wildly.
The glow reflected inside his eye lenses, and beneath the mask, Peter's expression had gone almost feral.
The moment the electromagnetic pulse reached full charge, Peter leaped high, appeared behind Fangtooth Harrison, and unleashed the overloaded blast.
Boom...
The smell of scorched fish spread through the street.
Fangtooth Harrison was blasted more than twenty yards away, tearing through the street and sending debris flying everywhere. Stone chunks crashed down over him. His hard scales split open, and blue, viscous blood spread across the pavement. A nearby fire hydrant burst open and sprayed water everywhere.
The whole area was a mess.
Peter stood there breathing hard, his gloves heating up and smoking slightly. It looked like the electromagnetic pulse gear was completely ruined.
His arms trembled uncontrollably, and his hands could barely bend anymore.
Sure enough, running the output at overload frequency put too much strain on his body. Even now that he technically counted as a mutant, he still could not fully withstand the backlash from that kind of damage.
Still, his healing factor was not bad.
He would probably recover in a few days.
"Hey, are your hands okay?!"
Gwen walked over to Peter and looked at his trembling, overheated hands with concern.
She had definitely overreacted a little earlier. He had only meant to catch her, after all.
That did not mean she was going to forgive him.
Absolutely not.
"They'll probably need two or three days before they're back to normal. My healing ability still isn't that strong. I guess I need more time to adapt..."
Peter gave a bitter smile.
Inside the Chinese restaurant, Harry was badly shaken by the destruction that had just landed so close to them.
Peter had been right.
This really was way more intense than watching a 6D movie.
When that monster had come flying over just now, Harry had honestly thought he was about to die. He had wanted to run, but his legs had refused to listen.
Luckily, the creature had been stopped by the big storefront sign. Whatever company had made that thing clearly had a conscience, because the support columns were solid concrete. Otherwise, it might not have held.
"Hey, this is so cool! MJ, don't you think this is incredible?!"
Still holding his phone, Harry turned to MJ with pure excitement.
This was absolutely the craziest thing he had ever seen in his life.
Compared to this, even joyriding felt boring.
"This is terrifying, not exciting!"
MJ snapped back after finally catching her breath.
But then her already pale face went completely white, and she let out a scream.
"Ahhh!!!"
The rubble in front of them shifted.
A hand pushed out from beneath it.
Then a body covered in sticky green blood dragged itself out.
It was clearly badly injured, but the thing seemed to feel no pain at all.
Yes, staying on land for too long weakened his mutant abilities.
But the broken fire hydrant had sprayed him directly with high-pressure water.
And fish belonged in water.
The next instant, Fangtooth Harrison lunged forward, smashed through the glass, and burst into the restaurant. He opened his jaws wide and went straight for the closest target.
MJ.
MJ was so terrified that she froze in place. Her legs trembled so badly she could not run even if she wanted to.
"M.J.!"
Harry instinctively yanked MJ behind him and started throwing everything on the table at the monster.
It did almost nothing.
"Damn it!"
"This guy! Run!"
Seeing that scene, Peter and Gwen both knew things had gone bad.
At the same time, they fired web lines onto Fangtooth Harrison and pulled hard.
But his claws still managed to rake across Harry's arm.
"Aahhh!"
Harry screamed as his sleeve was shredded apart. Three deep wounds opened across his arm, and the skin around them began darkening at a visible speed.
This thing's claws were poisonous too.
