Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 — The Trap Bites Back

The room didn't move.

But everything had changed.

"You let them in…" Elena repeated.

Adrian didn't deny it.

Didn't explain.

Just watched the screen.

Waiting.

Leon exhaled slowly.

"…If this backfires, I'm blaming you."

Adrian's voice stayed calm.

"It won't."

Elena wasn't so sure.

"Tell me you at least contained it," she said.

A pause.

Then—

"I redirected it."

That wasn't better.

"What does that even mean?"

Adrian finally looked at her.

"It means they're not inside our system."

A beat.

"They're inside a version of it I built for them."

Silence.

Leon smirked slightly.

"…A fake network."

Elena's eyes widened a little.

"A sandbox…"

Adrian nodded once.

"They think they're mapping us."

A pause.

"They're mapping what I want them to see."

Okay.

That was smart.

Dangerously smart.

Elena turned back to the screen.

"Then we watch them back."

Her fingers moved again.

Careful this time.

Slow.

She wasn't chasing anymore.

She was observing.

"There," she said quietly.

A hidden process.

Running behind the fake system.

Leon leaned in.

"Can you trace it?"

Elena shook her head slightly.

"Not directly."

A beat.

"But I can follow how it learns."

"Do it."

The system shifted.

Patterns forming.

Connections linking.

"They're scanning structure first… then behavior…" Elena muttered.

Her eyes sharpened.

"…They're not human."

Leon frowned.

"That's a bold claim."

"No," Elena said.

"They don't hesitate."

A beat.

"They don't guess."

Adrian's gaze darkened slightly.

"An AI?"

Elena hesitated.

"…Not exactly."

The screen flickered.

Again.

And then—

Something new appeared.

A file.

Hidden.

Encrypted.

"…That wasn't there before," Leon said.

"They planted it," Elena whispered.

Silence.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Open it."

Elena didn't move.

"…That's a bad idea."

"Do it."

Of course.

She exhaled slowly.

Then clicked.

The file opened.

At first—

Nothing.

Then—

A video.

Grainy.

Dark.

Elena leaned in slightly.

"…What is that…"

The image sharpened.

A room.

Familiar.

Too familiar.

Elena's breath stopped.

"…No way."

Leon's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

The camera angle shifted.

Showing more.

A desk.

A monitor.

A chair.

Her chair.

"That's my apartment," Elena said.

Silence.

The video wasn't live.

But it wasn't old either.

Then—

Movement.

A figure stepped into frame.

Face hidden.

Standing in her space.

Looking directly into the camera.

Like it knew she was watching.

Elena's hands tightened.

"…They've been there."

Leon's voice dropped instantly.

"When?"

"I don't know."

The figure lifted something.

A small object.

And placed it on her desk.

Then—

The video cut.

Black screen.

Silence filled the room again.

Heavy.

Different from before.

This wasn't a warning anymore.

This was proof.

"They can reach anywhere," Elena said quietly.

Adrian didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"Good."

Elena snapped her head toward him.

"Good?!"

His eyes locked onto hers.

"Now we know they're not untouchable."

Leon frowned.

"…Explain."

Adrian's voice lowered.

"If they were untouchable," he said,

"They wouldn't need to send messages."

A pause.

"They'd just end it."

Silence.

That…

made sense.

Elena looked back at the black screen.

Thinking.

Fast.

"They left something," she said.

Leon turned.

"What?"

"That object," Elena continued.

A beat.

"In the video."

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

"Find it."

Elena didn't hesitate this time.

Because now—

This wasn't just about their system.

This was about her.

And if they thought stepping into her life would scare her—

They were wrong.

Her fingers moved again.

Faster.

Sharper.

"Let's see what you left me," she whispered.

Outside—

Somewhere unseen—

The enemy was still watching.

But now—

They weren't the only ones hunting.

To be continued...
