Chapter 22 - Chapter 22 — The Signal That Watches Back

The signal didn't move.

It lingered.

Like it was… observing.

"…Why isn't it entering?" Elena whispered.

Her fingers hovered above the keyboard again.

Uncertain.

Victoria leaned slightly closer to the screen.

"…Because it already has."

A chill ran through the room.

Leon frowned.

"…That doesn't make sense."

Adrian didn't speak.

His eyes were locked onto the signal.

Unblinking.

"It's not interacting with the trap," Elena said slowly.

A pause.

"…It's studying it."

Silence.

Victoria exhaled quietly.

"…Then we underestimated it."

Leon scoffed.

"…We literally opened the door for them. What else do they want?"

Adrian finally moved.

One step closer.

"Certainty."

A pause.

"They don't act unless the outcome is guaranteed."

Elena's heart sank slightly.

"…So they're waiting for us to slip."

"Not waiting," Victoria corrected.

A beat.

"Pressuring."

Elena's screen flickered.

A small change.

Almost invisible.

"…They're probing," she said.

Lines of code shifted.

Subtle.

Careful.

"They're testing responses…"

Her voice tightened.

"…trying to see if this is real."

Leon cracked his fingers.

"…Then let's make it real."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

They looked at her.

"If we react too fast, they'll know it's fake."

A pause.

"We need to hesitate."

Adrian's gaze shifted to her.

"…Good."

A faint hint of approval.

"Let them feel in control," he said.

Victoria crossed her arms.

"…You're learning."

Elena didn't respond.

Her focus was locked in.

"…I'll slow down system responses," she muttered.

Typing again.

"Add delay… randomize reactions…"

The system began to change.

Less precise.

Less perfect.

More… human.

The signal pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

It moved.

"…It's entering," Elena said.

Leon's lips curved slightly.

"…Finally."

But Adrian didn't relax.

"Watch carefully."

The signal slid deeper into the system.

Careful.

Measured.

Like a predator stepping into unknown territory.

Elena tracked every movement.

"It's avoiding key nodes…"

A pause.

"…it knows where not to go."

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"…That's not just prediction."

"That's experience," Adrian finished.

Silence.

Leon's expression hardened.

"…So we're not dealing with something new."

"No," Adrian said quietly.

A beat.

"We're dealing with something that's done this before."

The signal paused again.

Right at the edge of the trap.

Elena held her breath.

"…Come on…" she whispered.

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then—

The system glitched.

A sudden spike.

"…What the—"

Elena's screen flooded with data.

Unfamiliar.

Unstructured.

"…This isn't part of our system," she said quickly.

Victoria stepped forward.

"…It's sending something back."

Leon frowned.

"…Sending?"

Adrian's voice dropped.

"…No."

A pause.

"It's asking."

Elena froze.

"…Asking what?"

The data shifted.

Forming patterns.

Not code.

Not exactly.

"…This looks like…" Elena whispered.

Her eyes widened.

"…a test."

Silence.

Victoria's expression darkened slightly.

"…It wants to see how we respond."

Leon let out a low laugh.

"…So now we're the ones being tested?"

Adrian didn't look away from the screen.

"Yes."

A beat.

"And if we fail—"

The system pulsed again.

Stronger this time.

Elena's voice dropped.

"…It'll know."

The room went completely still.

This wasn't a trap anymore.

It was a conversation.

And they didn't understand the language.

"…What do we do?" Elena asked.

For the first time—

There was uncertainty in her voice.

Adrian finally blinked.

Slow.

Controlled.

"Answer it."

Leon looked at him.

"…You serious?"

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

"If it's testing us," he said quietly,

"then we test it back."

Victoria tilted her head slightly.

"…Careful."

A pause.

"You don't know what kind of system this is."

Adrian's expression didn't change.

"I don't need to."

A beat.

"I just need to know one thing."

Elena swallowed.

"…What?"

Adrian's eyes locked onto the shifting data.

"Whether it's human…"

A pause.

"Or something else."

Elena hesitated.

Then—

Her fingers moved.

Carefully.

She sent a response.

Simple.

Minimal.

A signal.

The system froze.

Everything—

Stopped.

Leon's grip tightened.

"…What just happened?"

No one answered.

Because on the screen—

The signal changed.

Not moving.

Not probing.

Just… watching.

Then—

A new pattern formed.

Clear.

Deliberate.

And for the first time—

Understandable.

Elena's breath caught.

"…It responded."

Victoria stepped closer.

"…What does it say?"

Elena didn't answer immediately.

Her eyes stayed locked on the screen.

Processing.

Then—

Slowly—

"…It says…"

A pause.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Interesting."

Silence.

Adrian's lips curved faintly.

Not amused.

Not surprised.

Just… intrigued.

"…Good," he said quietly.

A beat.

"Now we know."

Leon frowned.

"…Know what?"

Adrian's eyes didn't leave the screen.

"That it's watching us…"

A pause.

"Just as much as we're watching it."

Somewhere—

Beyond their reach—

The system adjusted again.

Learning.

Adapting.

And now—

Engaged.

The trap had worked.

But not the way they expected.

Because they didn't catch it.

They woke it up.

To be continued...
