Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 — The First Move

No one said it out loud.

But they all felt it.

This wasn't just another enemy.

This was something else.

Adrian turned away first.

"Find them."

Simple.

Cold.

Final.

Leon didn't hesitate.

"Already trying."

He tapped the screen.

Lines of code moved fast.

Data streams shifting.

Searching.

Nothing.

"…They're ghosting us," Leon muttered.

Elena stepped closer.

"Move."

Leon glanced at her.

Just for a second.

Then stepped aside.

"Show me what you've got."

Elena's fingers hit the keyboard.

Fast.

Precise.

She didn't search directly.

She traced behavior.

Patterns.

Movement.

"They don't exist in systems," she said.

"They exist between them."

Leon watched.

Carefully.

"Meaning?"

"They don't leave footprints," Elena replied.

"They rewrite the ground."

Adrian stood behind them.

Silent.

Observing.

The screen flickered.

For a second—

Something appeared.

A signal.

Then—

Gone.

"…There," Elena whispered.

Leon leaned in.

"I didn't catch that."

"I did."

Her fingers moved faster.

Locking onto the fragment.

"Come on… come on…"

The system lagged.

That never happened.

Elena frowned.

"That's not normal."

Leon's tone sharpened.

"Pull back."

"Wait—"

Too late.

The screen went black.

All of it.

Silence.

"…Elena," Adrian said.

"I didn't crash it," she replied quickly.

The monitors flickered again.

But this time—

Not their system.

A message appeared.

Clean.

Centered.

Intentional.

WE SEE YOU.

No code.

No signature.

Just that.

Leon stepped forward instantly.

"Cut the network."

Already happening.

Systems shutting down.

Firewalls locking.

But the message didn't disappear.

It stayed.

Like it didn't care.

Elena stared at it.

"…They're inside," she said quietly.

"No," Leon corrected.

A beat.

"They let us see them."

That was worse.

Adrian's expression didn't change.

But his voice—

Colder than ever.

"Track it."

"I can't," Elena said.

Silence.

"I can't track something that isn't there."

The message flickered.

Then—

Changed.

STOP DIGGING.

A pause.

OR WE FINISH WHAT WE STARTED.

Elena's breath caught slightly.

Just slightly.

Adrian noticed.

Of course he did.

"…What did they start?" he asked.

A beat.

Elena didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"They didn't just try to find me," she said quietly.

Her eyes stayed on the screen.

"They tried to kill me."

Silence.

The room felt smaller.

Tighter.

Leon exhaled slowly.

"…Good."

Elena shot him a look.

"What is wrong with you?"

His expression didn't change.

"Now it's personal."

Adrian stepped forward.

Standing beside her.

Looking at the message.

Unmoved.

"Then we respond," he said.

Elena frowned.

"You don't respond to them," she said.

"You survive them."

A pause.

Adrian turned his head slightly.

Looking at her.

"That's not how I operate."

Silence.

And for the first time—

Elena realized something dangerous.

He wasn't scared of them.

At all.

Which meant—

This wasn't just a fight anymore.

It was going to be a war.

And neither side planned to lose.

The screen finally went dark.

But the message stayed in their heads.

They were watching.

And now—

They had made the first move.

To be continued...
