Chapter 16 - THE INSOLVENT SUN

The roof of Apex Academy vibrated with the weight of six obsidian statues. These were not living beings. They were The Liquidators. Each one stood ten feet tall with bodies carved from soul-tempered basalt and hearts made of grinding gears. Their eyes were not pupils but shifting numerical displays that calculated the value of everything they looked at.

Kaelen Thorne stood on the helipad facing the lead construct. Beside him Lia Sinclair radiated a violet aura that seemed to hunger for the very stones beneath her feet. Silas Vesper held his daggers in a reverse grip his body flickering in and out of the shadow realm. Uriel the fallen archangel stood further back his hands glowing with a faint holy resonance.

The lead Liquidator stepped forward its mechanical voice sounding like a mountain of glass shattering. Identification: Kaelen Thorne. Classification: Leased Asset 001. Identification: Lia Sinclair. Classification: Unlawful Possessor.

The construct raised a massive obsidian hand that transformed into a jagged blade. The World Bank of Souls has issued a foreclosure notice. Lia Sinclair you are in possession of stolen collateral. Surrender the Ledger and the Leased Asset or face immediate liquidation.

Lia laughed a hollow sound that carried the echo of a thousand dying stars. I don't surrender what I own. And right now I own the man you're looking for.

Kaelen stepped between Lia and the construct his hands in his pockets. He looked remarkably calm for a man whose heart was currently a glowing digital seal. Wait Kaelen said his voice clear and authoritative. Before you proceed with the liquidation you should check the sub-clause of the Leased Asset agreement.

The Liquidators paused. Their numerical eyes began to spin at a high velocity.

According to the Architect's own protocols Kaelen continued a leased asset is classified as an 'Active Management Tool' if it is currently engaged in debt recovery. I am the Operating Officer of a Ledger that holds the debt of one million students. If you seize me you are interrupting a recovery process worth fifty trillion mana units.

The lead Liquidator's eyes flashed red. Calculation: The recovery process is unverified. The students are currently independent entities.

They are independent but their debt to the system is still being managed by my Ledger Kaelen countered. If you remove the Operating Officer the students will default. A mass default of one million souls will cause a permanent deficit in the World Bank's quarterly earnings. Are you authorized to trigger a cosmic recession?

The constructs hesitated. Their programming was designed for efficiency not for navigating the complex web of financial traps Kaelen had woven.

While they were processing Lia Sinclair didn't wait. She lunged forward her hand extending into a blade of pure violet void. She didn't aim for the obsidian skin of the constructs. She aimed for their hearts.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[ASSET ENGAGEMENT: LIA SINCLAIR VS THE LIQUIDATORS]

[LIA SINCLAIR HAS ACTIVATED: VOID EATER (LV 1)]

The first construct tried to parry but Lia's hand passed right through its basalt arm and buried itself in the obsidian chest. Instead of blood a stream of pure white mana erupted from the wound. Lia began to drain the construct's life force her eyes glowing with a terrifying light.

Silas Vesper blurred behind the second Liquidator his daggers finding the narrow gaps in its clockwork neck. Uriel fired beams of holy light that acted as anchors pinning the remaining four constructs to the roof.

The battle was not a fight. It was a harvest.

Kaelen watched the data on his tablet. These Liquidators were not powered by internal mana pools. Every time Lia drained them a new stream of energy flowed down from the sky to replenish them.

Look at the sky Kaelen shouted over the roar of the mana explosion.

Silas looked up and saw a thin golden tether connecting the top of each Liquidator's head to the Sun. The Sun was not just shining. It was pulsing with a rhythmic golden light that matched the movement of the Liquidators.

They are being remotely powered Kaelen said. The Sun is the wireless charging station for the Divine IPO. As long as that star is in the sky these constructs have infinite health.

Then we need to kill the Sun Lia shouted as she tore the arm off the third construct only to see it regrow in seconds.

We can't kill it Kaelen said his eyes glowing with the golden light of the [Ledger Keeper]. But we can place a lien on it.

Kaelen opened his system interface and navigated to the [Sovereign Asset] menu. He looked at the Sun. In the eyes of the System the Sun was not a star. It was the [SOLAR CORE MANA RELAY].

[ITEM: SOLAR CORE MANA RELAY]

[OWNER: THE HIGH COUNCIL OF SEVENTH HEAVEN]

[STATUS: MORTGAGED TO THE WORLD BANK OF SOULS]

Kaelen's heart skipped a beat. The Gods had mortgaged the Sun. They had used the very life force of the solar system as collateral to fund the Divine IPO.

It's a leverage play Kaelen whispered to himself. They borrowed against the Sun to buy the Earth.

Kaelen Thorne what are you doing? Uriel shouted as a Liquidator broke free and sent him flying across the roof.

I'm calling a default Kaelen said.

Kaelen used his [Authority] to link his Ledger directly to the Solar Core's public ledger. He saw the debt numbers. The High Council was behind on their interest payments to the World Bank of Souls.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: DEBT ARCHITECT]

[NEW CONTRACT: THE SOLAR LIEN]

Kaelen siphoned the last of his temporary mana from his heart-seal and sent it into the system. He wasn't attacking the Sun. He was buying the overdue interest.

By paying the interest on the Sun's mortgage Kaelen became the 'Secondary Lien Holder'.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[LIEN REGISTERED: KAELEN THORNE HAS ACQUIRED 5% OWNERSHIP OF THE SUN]

[NEW COMMAND: RESTRICT OUTBOUND POWER]

In an instant the golden tethers connecting the Liquidators to the sky turned grey. The constructs froze. Their Numerical eyes began to countdown to zero as their power supply was cut off.

Lia didn't miss the opportunity. She expanded her void aura and consumed all six constructs in a single massive gulp.

[LEVEL UP]

[LEVEL UP]

[LEVEL: 30]

[YOU HAVE ACQUIRED: LIQUIDATOR CORE (x6)]

Lia landed softly on the roof her body smoking with dark energy. She looked up at the Sun and then at Kaelen. Did we just buy a piece of the star?

Only five percent Kaelen said sitting on the edge of the roof his face pale from the effort. But in the world of finance five percent is enough to block a board vote. I just froze the power supply for every S-Rank Hero on the planet who is sponsored by the High Council.

Across the world in every major city the "Golden Heroes" who were fighting the Gates suddenly lost their glow. Their swords stopped humming. Their shields shattered.

Kaelen looked at the countdown in the sky. 01:10:05:00.

The Architect is going to be furious Kaelen muttered.

But as he spoke the Sun began to change color. It wasn't golden anymore. It was turning a deep bruised violet.

[WARNING: UNKNOWN ENTITY HAS COUNTER-BID ON THE SUN]

[IDENTIFICATION: THE ORIGINAL TIMELINE ARCHIVE]

A voice echoed from the sky sounding like a recording of a dead world.

Kaelen Thorne the voice said. You think the Sun is just a battery? You think the Gods built it to power their toys?

The Sun began to expand and a massive face appeared in the solar flares. It was the face of the Other Kaelen the Bankrupt Ghost but it was five hundred miles wide.

The Sun is a prison Kaelen the Ghost roared. It is where the souls of the first three civilizations were burned into fuel. And you just unlocked the door.

Suddenly millions of black streaks began to fall from the Sun toward Earth. They weren't monsters. They were the Failed Protagonists of previous timelines.

[WORLD EVENT: THE PRISON BREAK OF SOULS]

[THE PREVIOUS ARCHITECTS HAVE ENTERED THE MARKET]

Kaelen looked at Lia and Silas.

Get inside Kaelen said his voice cold with a new kind of fear. We didn't just buy a star. We just bought the debt of everyone who ever failed before us.

Kaelen returns to his office to find a single man sitting on his desk. The man is wearing the same suit as Kaelen but he has a crown made of barbed wire on his head.

Hello Kaelen the man says. I'm the Kaelen from Timeline Beta. I'm here to tell you that you're doing a great job. But unfortunately I've decided to file for a Total Hostile Merger.

The man raises a hand and every student in the Academy suddenly starts screaming as their golden threads turn into barbed wire.

I'm not here to kill you Kaelen says the Crowned King. I'm here to take back my Ledger.
