Chapter 19 - THE COSMIC MARGIN CALL

The red door at the end of the solar chamber did not just open.

It hemorrhaged.

The sound was a cacophony of grinding metal and the screams of a billion liquidated civilizations.

From the abyss beyond the threshold ships made of calcified bone and rusted iron began to pour into the heart of the sun.

They were the Void Swarm.

They were the collectors who arrived when a universe finally defaulted on its existence.

The Original Architect backed away from his desk his face a mask of primal terror.

They are here the Architect whispered. The External Creditors. They don't want to talk Kaelen. They don't want to audit. They only want to strip the code for parts.

Kaelen Thorne stood his ground.

His charcoal suit was singed and his glasses were cracked but his eyes remained fixed on the lead vessel.

The ship was a jagged spire of obsidian that pulsed with a cold hungry light.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[NEW ENEMY DETECTED: THE VOID SWARM]

[ESTIMATED ASSET VALUE: UNKNOWN]

[INTENT: TOTAL FORECLOSURE]

Kaelen looked at the Architect.

You were going to let them in Kaelen said. You were going to leave the back door open while you ran away with the remaining capital.

The Architect did not deny it.

This world is dead Kaelen! It is a toxic asset! You can't fight them with a ledger and a few rebellious students!

Kaelen turned back to the red door.

He felt the presence of the Eater of Systems approaching.

It was a consciousness so vast and so cold that it made the Shadow Monarch look like a flickering candle.

Uriel the fallen archangel collapsed to his knees his eyes bleeding golden light.

It is the End of Days Uriel moaned. Not the one we predicted. This is the silence after the song.

Kaelen ignored the angel's despair.

He activated the [Crown of the Debtor].

The barbed wire around his head tightened and he felt a surge of cold authority flowing through his veins.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: PREDATORY REFINANCING]

[TARGET: THE VOID SWARM]

[EFFECT: CONVERTING HOSTILE FORCE INTO EQUITY]

Kaelen stepped toward the lead ship as it began to deploy swarms of mechanical insects designed to eat reality itself.

I am Kaelen Thorne Kaelen's voice boomed through the solar core.

I am the Acting Architect of this Sector.

I am filing a Formal Objection to this foreclosure.

The lead ship stopped.

A voice echoed from the obsidian hull a sound like two tectonic plates rubbing together.

OBJECTION DENIED.

THE UNIVERSE EARTH 01 HAS FAILED TO MEET ITS MINIMUM MANA REQUIREMENTS FOR THREE CONSECUTIVE CYCLES.

LIQUIDATION IS MANDATORY.

Kaelen adjusted his tie.

Your data is outdated Kaelen said.

You are basing your valuation on the previous management's records.

Kaelen pointed at the pillars of light representing the timelines.

The previous Architect was hiding assets Kaelen continued.

He was siphoning mana into offshore accounts to fund his own escape.

But I have just performed a global audit.

The Architect looked at Kaelen with wide eyes. What are you doing?

I am opening the books Kaelen replied.

Kaelen tapped his tablet and a massive holographic ledger appeared in the center of the solar chamber.

It did not show the 0 mana balance.

It showed the one million contracts of the Shadow Scholarship.

It showed the soul equity of the failed protagonists.

It showed the captured Archangel Uriel and the evolution of the World Eater Lia Sinclair.

Look at the growth potential Kaelen said to the Void Swarm.

In less than forty eight hours I have increased the local mana efficiency by five hundred percent.

I have decentralized the risk and created a million new points of production.

This is not a dying asset.

This is a Startup.

The Void Swarm ships remained silent for a long moment.

Their numerical eyes scanned the data at a speed that made the air hum.

UNEXPECTED GROWTH DETECTED the voice from the ship stated.

HOWEVER THE PRINCIPAL DEBT TO THE COSMIC BANK IS STILL OUTSTANDING.

WE REQUIRE TEN TRILLION UNITS OF PURE ESSENCE TO HALT THE FORECLOSURE.

I don't have ten trillion units Kaelen admitted.

But I am offering you an Equity Swap.

Kaelen walked to the red door and placed his hand on the threshold.

Instead of fighting you I am inviting you to invest.

I am granting the Void Swarm a twenty percent stake in the future earnings of Earth 01.

You become our Secondary Sponsors.

You protect our borders from other predators and in exchange you get a direct cut of every gate cleared and every soul saved.

The Architect let out a strangled cry. You are giving the Void a seat on the Board?! You are insane!

I am survival Kaelen snapped.

Better to have a hungry partner than a hungry executioner.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[PROPOSAL ISSUED: THE VOID PARTNERSHIP]

[PROBABILITY OF ACCEPTANCE: 12.5%]

The obsidian ship drifted closer until its jagged hull was only inches from Kaelen's face.

Kaelen could feel the cold breath of the end of the universe on his skin.

He did not blink.

He was the Accountant who had stared down a God and he would not flinch for a machine.

ACCEPTED the Void voice finally boomed.

WE PREFER DIVIDENDS OVER SCRAP METAL.

BUT BE WARNED ARCHITECT.

IF THE QUARTERLY REPORTS SHOW A DECLINE WE WILL CONSUME YOUR HEART AS INTEREST.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

[THE VOID SWARM HAS JOINED THE LEDGER]

[NEW STATUS: THE INTERSTELLAR CONGLOMERATE]

[THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEEN SUSPENDED]

The red door slammed shut and the obsidian ships began to retreat into the shadows of the sun.

They were no longer enemies.

They were the most terrifying security guards in the history of existence.

The Original Architect slumped into his chair his suitcase falling to the floor.

You did it the Architect whispered. You actually sold a piece of the universe to the Void.

I didn't sell it Kaelen said walking over to the Architect's desk.

I shared the risk.

Now get out of my chair.

Kaelen grabbed the Architect by his collar and threw him toward the temporal rift.

You're fired Kaelen said.

I am taking full control of the Root Access.

Kaelen sat in the Architect's chair and placed his hands on the black glass desk.

In an instant his mind was flooded with the raw code of the world.

He could see every student. Every monster. Every blade of grass.

He could see Lia Sinclair on the Academy roof still holding the buffer of the deletion.

He could see Vane hiding in the shadows of the city planning his next move.

Lia Kaelen said through the mental link.

You can stop now.

I've just refinanced the reality.

Lia collapsed on the roof gasping for air as the black void retracted into her skin.

Did we win? she asked.

We survived Kaelen replied.

Which is the only victory that matters in business.

But as Kaelen began to reorganize the world's code a new notification appeared on the screen.

It was not from the System or the Void.

It was a local alert from the Academy's infirmary.

[CRITICAL ALERT]

[PATIENT ALARIC VON HEIST HAS DISAPPEARED]

[LAST RECORDED MANA SIGNATURE: SSS RANK]

[NOTE: THE PATIENT HAS CONSUMED THE DIVINE CORE OF THE ACADEMY]

Kaelen looked at the monitor his eyes narrowing.

Alaric had not been sitting idle while Kaelen was in the sun.

The Golden Boy had finally realized that to beat an Accountant he had to become a Thief.

Kaelen Thorne a voice whispered from the shadows of the solar chamber.

Kaelen turned around and found Alaric standing there.

But it was not the Alaric he knew.

His skin was glowing with a blinding white light and his eyes were two burning suns.

He was holding a sword made of the Academy's very foundation.

You took my father Alaric said his voice vibrating with the power of a fallen god.

You took my rank.

You took my future.

So I took the only thing you couldn't own.

Alaric raised his sword and the solar chamber began to crack.

I took the End of the Story.
