Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Song of the Abyss

The Azure Ghost glided through the water with a silence that was almost eerie. Inside the cockpit, Kaito felt a strange sense of peace. The bioluminescent controls pulsed in sync with his own heartbeat. Through the reinforced crystal canopy, he watched the sunlight fade away, replaced by the eternal twilight of the deep ocean.

"Three days to the Dead Zone," Kaito whispered, checking the holographic map that Silas had installed. "I need to stay focused."

But the ocean had other plans. Suddenly, a haunting, melodic sound drifted through the hull of the ship. It wasn't a mechanical noise; it was a voice—or a thousand voices—singing a song that felt like a warm embrace.

"Kaito... come home..." the voices whispered.

Kaito's eyes grew heavy. He felt a sudden urge to open the hatch, to let the water in, to join the beautiful melody. His hand moved toward the emergency release lever, his mind clouding over.

SCREECH!

A sharp, piercing alarm rang out from the ship's core. The Azure Ghost shuddered, its blue lights turning a violent red. The sudden jolt snapped Kaito out of his trance. He looked out the window and gasped.

Surrounding the ship were dozens of pale, glowing figures with long, flowing hair and eyes like black pearls. Storm-Sirens. They weren't beautiful maidens; they were predators of the deep, their mouths filled with rows of needle-like teeth. Their 'song' was a sonic trap used to lure sailors to their deaths.

"Not today!" Kaito yelled, grabbing the controls.

He channeled his magic into the ship's heart. "Azure Ghost, give me everything you've got! Sonic Burst!"

The living ship responded instantly. A massive wave of concentrated sound exploded outward from the hull. The Sirens shrieked in pain as the sonic blast shattered their formation, sending them tumbling back into the darkness.

Kaito didn't wait for them to recover. He pushed the throttle forward, and the Azure Ghost shot through the water like a bolt of lightning, leaving the singing shadows far behind.
