Chapter 9 - The gray matter.

Professor Larry Gram, a history professor, focuses his course on world history and the system, explaining the details clearly to his students.

It's hard for someone with limited talent to be a "conqueror", so he became a professor.

Larry loved his subject and the curiosity his students showed toward it, his ability helped him understand them better.

Students often said they understood when they hadn't, such simple lies made Larry work even harder.

So he made his ability public, and everyone at the school came to know about it.

He adopted a strict and stern demeanor to prevent students from lying.

His approach may have been extreme, but the results were good, he was pleased that the students had become more honest.

Larry entered the classroom, placed the books he was carrying on his desk, and looked around at the students.

Larry noticed that Milly wasn't there, then looked at the desk next to hers, Deebt Jacks was sitting there.

The lazy talent, but he's awake now.

Larry was genuinely happy about Deebt's change, he didn't resent him or envy him, because in the end, he had chosen his own path.

True, he had limited talent, but he had chosen his path of his own free will, and he was content.

Larry began calling out the names.

"Heri Mesia."

"Present."

"Mel Khavia."

"Present."

"Sam Lucas."

"Present."

"Ronnie Taiba."

"Present."

….

"Milly Hamilton."

"Absent, then." said Larry, and marked her as absent.

"Deebt Jacks."

"Present."

Larry finished calling the roll, then began explaining the lesson.

"We talked earlier about the system, and how it has helped humanity, and we stopped when we got to the part about information."

"As we said before, the lines come through monsters or conquerors, and are located in their spinal cords. But just because you have the lines doesn't mean you've gained an ability, everyone needs a certain number of lines to gain an ability, and needs a certain number of lines to develop that ability. The system only shows you the percentage and doesn't show you the number you'll need. "

"Let's take an example, when you get your first line, the system displays the percentage. For instance, if you get 5 lines out of 100, that's 5%. But once you complete 100 lines, you can request an ability, or you can collect more lines to get a stronger ability."

"But you can request an ability from the system even if you only have 5 lines. However, don't expect a powerful ability or one that suits your souls, that's the risk, so you must be patient."

"You can also buy lines, whether through the black market or major companies, but they're expensive. When you enter the academies, if you pass their test, they'll give you a certain number each week. You can also get lines by earning experience points within the academies, which comes from completing missions."

Professor Larry explained calmly and in very simple terms. His explanation was long, but engaging and valuable, he didn't hide any detail, no matter how small.

"When you obtain an ability, do you know why you use that ability?" Larry asked.

Many students raised their hands, Larry chose one at random.

"Answer, Ronnie."

"Well, the gray matter is the reason abilities are used to their full potential." A young man with long hair and black eyes, with dark circles around them, spoke up.

"Yes, well done, Ronny."

"As Ronny said, the gray matter is the reason abilities are used."

Then Larry began to explain.

The lesson now seemed to have nothing to do with history, it was as if it had turned into a science class.

But all of that was part of history, because the person who discovered that gray matter is the reason behind the use of these abilities was a historian researching the relationship between the development of ancient civilizations and the system.

His name was Davinci Archimedes.

A scientist famous for his madness and his tireless research into his theory, many considered him mad, but when he proved the opposite, the foundations built by the ignorant before him crumbled.

Davinci became a legend, a true legend.

"Gray matter is found in only two places: the brain, specifically its outer layer called the cerebral cortex, and in deep clusters within the brain called the basal ganglia and the thalamus."

"The second location is the spinal cord, where it has a butterfly like shape and is surrounded by white matter."

Larry's explanation was simple, he didn't delve into complex details but believed that explaining things in a simple, easy way helped students understand better.

"In the brain, it is responsible for sensory processing, control, and higher brain functions such as the language we speak, our thinking, and our memory, it is also responsible for decision making. Many people are unaware of this and consider it unnecessary knowledge, but that is wrong, it is essential to know, because an increase in this substance means greater density in neural connections… All of this helps a person in their life, whether it is ordinary or if they are a conqueror."

Larry never stopped talking, he continued to explain in detail and in simple terms, answering all kinds of questions. He didn't get bored or seem annoyed, rather, he was enjoying himself.

"As for the spinal cord, it is responsible for sensory reception, such as when a person feels cold, and for motor commands, such as involuntary movements."

"When you have an ability, you'll think that using it depends entirely on your body, and you might think your brain is responsible for only a small part of it."

"Do you know why the system shows us information about strength, agility, endurance, and speed? All this information relates to the external body, while intelligence alone relates to the internal. This is because using the ability and withstanding its effects depends on the external body, therefore, you must significantly increase its strength. If any of you in the future has an ability that emits fire like the sun, and if your body hasn't reached a high level, you will die at the hands of your own abilities or suffer severe injuries."

"This is just the beginning, but once the body gets used to it and adapts, everything will become natural, and you'll be able to use it more efficiently."

"Using an ability involves 20 percent of the body, which acts as the gateway for the ability to manifest outwardly. And 80 percent occurs through the brain and internal body. Since all abilities, before manifesting in reality, draw their power from the inside out."

"That is why you must not underestimate the ability to increase gray matter, for it is your foundation."
