Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Iron Tether

Sunny's heel slipped over the edge.

For a terrifying, heart-stopping fraction of a second, his boot met nothing but empty air. His balance faltered. Below him, the howling vortex of the Sky Below churned, a swirling sea of nothing and fiery oblivion waiting to swallow anything that fell.

He violently threw his weight forward, bringing his other boot down hard onto the rusted metal, his muscles screaming as he arrested his own momentum.

"Fall back!" Sunny roared over the deafening wind. "Onto the chain!"

It was a desperate, borderline suicidal tactical call. The colossal chain connecting the Iron Hand Island to the next island was massive, each individual link the size of a truck, but its surface was completely round, slick with rust and the morning mist. Fighting on a curved surface suspended over a bottomless drop was a death sentence.

But staying on the flat palm of the statue meant being crushed flat by the Fallen Demon.

Cielle, who had just managed to stagger to her feet, didn't argue. She didn't hesitate. She simply threw herself backward off the precipice of the island.

Sunny didn't have time to watch her. The Fallen Monster brought its massive, claw down in a devastating crush. Sunny channeled his essence, letting the shadows wrap around him from the sword just as the rusted iron where he had been standing caved inward with a deafening CRUNCH.

He materialized out of the darkness ten feet lower, landing hard on the curved, sloping surface of the first massive chain link.

The metal was freezing and impossibly slippery. He immediately dropped to one knee, digging his fingers into the deep grooves of the rust to anchor himself, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

A few feet below him, Cielle had landed smoothly. Her wings had snapped open the moment she dropped, catching the violent updrafts of the abyss to gently deposit her on the chain without losing her footing. She folded them instantly to avoid being blown away by the winds, her green eyes locked on the edge of the island above them.

"It's not going to follow us," Sunny yelled over the wind, trying to convince himself as much as her. "It's too heavy. Its center of gravity is a nightmare. It won't risk the drop!"

The Fallen Demon appeared at the edge of the iron cliff, its massive silhouette blocking out what little light filtered through the grey mist. It looked down at them, the sickly orange light in its eyes flaring with absolute, corrupted hatred.

It let out a metallic shriek that vibrated in Sunny's teeth.

Then, it leaped.

"You have got to be kidding me!" Sunny yelled, scrambling backward up the slope of the chain link as the massive beast plummeted toward them.

The Fallen Monster slammed onto the chain with the force of a falling meteor.

The impact was cataclysmic. The colossal iron tether let out a groan that sounded like a dying god, vibrating so violently that Sunny was physically thrown into the air for a brief second. The chain swung sideways, penduluming sickeningly over the abyss.

The beast didn't slip. Its massive claws gouged deep, brutal trenches straight into the iron, anchoring it securely to the curved surface. It raised its head, its rusted gears spinning furiously, and began to lumber down the chain toward them.

High above, still perched on the thumb of the Iron Hand Island, Stone Saint remained an impassive sentinel. Her ruby eyes glowed through the mist as she drew her great bow back.

Thwip. CRACK.

A heavy arrow tore downward, striking the Fallen Monster squarely in the shoulder. The force was immense, but the beast's iron hide was simply too thick. The arrow shattered upon impact, though the force made the monster stagger slightly, its claws shrieking against the metal.

"We can't fight it head-on!" Sunny shouted, using his essence to tightly bind his boots to the slippery rust(Bro thinks he is in naruto), maintaining his balance as the chain swayed. "Its hide is impenetrable! Saint can't piece it from that distance!"

"Keep it busy!" Cielle yelled back, her voice cutting clearly through the howling wind. "I need time to reset the domain!"

"Take all the time you need, just don't die!" Sunny gritted his teeth, raising the Midnight Shard.

He didn't wait for the beast to reach him. He surged forward.

Fighting on the chain was a nightmare . Every step was a calculated risk against gravity. Sunny couldn't rely on his usual frantic, agile footwork; a single misstep meant tumbling into the void. He had to fight with agonizing precision.

The Fallen Demon lunged, snapping its jaw at his torso. Sunny sidestepped, letting the massive head crash into the iron link beside him. He brought his blade down in a brutal, sweeping arc, aiming for the beast's neck.

The Midnight Shard sparked against the rusted armor plates, leaving a shallow gouge but failing to draw blood. The sheer recoil traveled up Sunny's arms, numbing his wrists.

Before he could recover his stance, the beast violently swung its head, the side of its iron skull slamming into Sunny's chest.

The blow lifted him off his feet, throwing him backward toward the sloping edge of the chain. He scrambled frantically, his fingers scrabbling against the wet rust, managing to hook his arm into a deep groove just before he slid off entirely. His legs dangled briefly over the abyss, the howling wind tearing at his clothes.

The beast loomed over him, raising both of its massive, rusted front claws for a final, devastating crush.

Sunny couldn't pull himself up in time. He couldn't shadow-step; he didn't have a large enough shadow. He stared up at the descending claws, bracing for an impact that would undoubtedly shatter his skull and sever his grip.

Suddenly, the space around him shifted.

A faint, glowing ring of essence bloomed into existence, anchoring itself to the slick metal of the chain. Cielle's Seraphic Domain was back online.

Sunny felt a strange, sudden lightness in his limbs. The wind stopped pulling at him so violently. The oppressive gravity trying to drag him into the abyss felt as though it had been momentarily dialed back.

As the beast's claws descended into the feathered domain, Cielle threw both of her hands out, her face pale with strain. She couldn't stop the massive Fallen demon, she had already learned that the hard way, but she didn't need to stop it. She just needed to shift it.

Inside the domain, the physical distance between the descending claws and Sunny's head was violently tretched.

The massive claws seemed to slow, their lethal trajectory veering suddenly to the right by mere inches.

Instead of crushing Sunny's skull into pulp, the blow glanced off his left pauldron. The rusted iron tore a deep gash through his dark armor, biting into the flesh beneath, but it missed his vital organs. The claws slammed into the chain right next to his hand, sending a violent tremor through the metal.

Sunny gasped in pain, but the distraction was enough.

"Now!" Cielle screamed, her hands trembling as she held the spatial distortion together.

Sunny didn't hesitate. Using the beast's own embedded claw as leverage, he vaulted himself back onto the top of the chain. He didn't aim for the impenetrable hide on its back. He saw the opening he needed. When the beast had brought its claws down, the heavy armor plates around its shoulder joint had shifted, exposing the grinding, rusted flesh beneath.

Sunny channeled every ounce of his remaining shadow essence into the Midnight Shard. The blade turned into a void of absolute, consuming darkness.

He drove the sword straight into the beast's front leg.

The blade sank deep, shattering the metal.

The Beast roared in absolute agony, its leg buckling beneath it. It thrashed wildly in a blind panic. Its massive, heavy tail swept across the chain in a wide, unpredictable arc.

The blow caught Cielle squarely in the ribs.

She was entirely focused on maintaining the domain, completely unguarded. The impact was brutal. The heavy tail lifted her clean off the side of the massive link.

Sunny ripped his sword free, his blood freezing as he watched her small form tumble outward into the empty, howling air over the abyss.

"Cielle!"

She was falling fast, the grey mist rushing up to swallow her.

But she didn't panic. Even in freefall, her face remained an absolute mask of terrifying, practical calm.

Her massive wings snapped open with a sound like a cracking whip. The pristine feathers caught the violent, chaotic updrafts of the abyss. But the wind was too turbulent; she couldn't simply fly back up. She was losing altitude.

So, she used the domain.

The ring of essence flared around her falling body. She didn't use it to stop her descent. She used the spatial manipulation to take her downward momentum, compress the distance ahead of her, and violently redirect her trajectory.

It was a slingshot maneuver that broke every law of physics.

Instead of falling, Cielle shot upward and forward, hurtling back toward the chain at a terrifying speed, entirely bypassing the monster's thrashing guard. She flew directly over the beast's head, dropping her hands.

With a heavy, metallic rasp, her dark chains materialized from her palms. They whipped out like iron vipers, wrapping tightly around the beast's uninjured front leg and its thick, armored neck.

Cielle landed hard on the adjacent chain link, twenty feet behind the monster. She dug her bare heels into the deep rust, her wings beating furiously in reverse to anchor her to the metal. She gripped the chains and violently, ruthlessly yanked backward with every ounce of strength she could afford.

Between the shattered metal in its left leg and the sudden, overwhelming backward force from Cielle's chains, the Fallen Demon's center of gravity completely, catastrophically failed.

The massive beast stumbled backward on the curved, slick iron, desperately trying to find purchase, teetering on the absolute brink of the abyss.
