Chapter 22 - A tool

The morning light bathed Subrind like a punishment; it came with heat, suffocating and trapped heat.

Entire districts had gone without electricity through the night. Fans died, conditioners shut off, refrigerators and even water pumps stopped functioning in poorer neighborhoods. By dawn, the country already smelled different: sweat, smoke, sewage, and fear mixing together beneath the heavy air.

And then the hospitals began collapsing.

At one general hospital, the backup generator failed at exactly 8:00AM.

And for one horrifying second, nobody reacted. The nurses simply stared upward at the lights blinking out overhead as though their minds refused to process what had happened.

Then the ICU alarms died too.

Panic erupted instantly.

"Get manual oxygen now!"

"Move the children first!"

"We need flashlights!"
