Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 A New Plan, New ambitions, and A New Friend

First off I should probably make a large wooden bowl, to boil my water. Since bloody diarrhoea hasn't been fun to deal with.

I headed out into the forest to find a thick dead log. My plan is to carve out one side of the log, with enough empty space that it can contain water.

I spend the day checking the pit traps and looking around the area for the log.

It seems I'm not so lucky today. No new prey, and no dead trees around the area.

Looks like I have to take a log from the dam.

I rolled over a moderately large rock and placed it on top of the dam.

I then pulled out the wet log from the dam and water started flowing from the new hole. I quickly placed the large stone to fill in the gap.

I then reseal the dam with some small stones and wet mud. "Perfect!"

I took the log over to the camp fire, after taking a good look at it, it was about 10 inches wide in diameter and about 20 inches long. I bring it over and place a flat stone near the fire to make a base. It will make a nice place to lay my boiling pot when I need to boil water.

I spent 5 days carving the log, I kept the log wet so the wood is softer. I do this so it is easier to carve. Since I'm still a weak little child.

Yes, yes I know if I carve with wet wood, when it dries it will crack and warp, I just have to hope for the best. At that point I didn't have any other option.

My hands had been ripped apart from all the carving. Even though the wood was softer when wet, my hands were still delicate.

As more wounds and blisters appeared, carving became harder and harder and became more mentally exhausting.

I finally decided that a four inch deep, boiling pot is the best I can do for now.

New update: my hands were all beaten up, looks like I need to wrap them up with leaves.

It took about 3 weeks for my hands to heal, enough to do some work.

No pull ups or push ups though, but my leg strength and cardio endurance saw a massive improvement, since they were the focus point of my workout progression.

Since the pit traps weren't catching anything, I decided that I will set up more traps in the future; further away from my home about 100 meters or so. I still had to wait until my hands fully healed.

I was getting tired of all the fish meat and decided to try my luck hunting small game, a bunny or a bird. So I resharpened my knife and brought along a sharpened stick; I brought some smoked fish covered in leaves just in case I needed an emergency supply of food.

As I headed out deeper into the forest. The foliage gets denser, taller, with bushes, trees, and all kinds of plant life. The noise of life gets louder as I continue on.

I heard high pitch chirping quite often. Insects all over the place, ones I've seen before back in my past life, and others, new and weird looking, bigger and bright in colour.

I see fast moving rabbits with different colour patches covering their fur coats, and a group of wild boar far larger than I caught with my pit trap…..

I duck into the safest looking bush to hide. I seemed to realise this forest is more dangerous than I originally thought. My thoughts were if I stay away from predators I should be safe. I guess I was wrong.

Those brightly coloured insects were most likely poisonous. I'm willing to bet some of these flowers and herbs are poisonous too. Though they do look beautiful and enchanting.

I'm glad, I have only consumed animal meat. If I had gotten desperate...

Never mind, let's not think about it.

After the wild boars sniffed the air and passed by. I slowly checked the surroundings and then made my way back in a U shape.

Why am I not taking the old path? I wanted to cover more areas and see if I could catch something for dinner. As I continued on my way home I heard a loud scream, I think I heard this sound before...

It was when I came to pick up the bunnies from the pit traps.

Maybe I can have some rabbit for dinner! I head over to the sound. It gets louder and louder. As I slow down and sneak up, I tighten my grip on my wooden spear.

I winced in pain, since I forgot about the blisters on my hands, though mostly healed, they still hurt. I grit my teeth and continue sneaking, watching my step for any fallen branches and leaves. At some point the sound stops. I continue forward to the general direction of the sound.

From behind a thick tree I heard a small snap and ripping sound, I peeked over staying close to the tree. I saw a bird about 10 inches tall with its back facing me, standing on top of a dead bunny with blood flowing from its wounds. The bird seems to be eating my dinner.

I slowly approached the bird and twisted my body to prepare a swing motion with my spear. I slowly approached step by step. I was sweating, my heart was beating like a drum, as I approached the swinging distance I stepped on a branch. 'Crack!'

I quickly looked down and realised my mistake. I looked back at the bird and saw it turning around to look at me, with its wings flapping. I jump forward and swing with all my might.

'Thunk!' the bird goes sideways. I sneaked over and poked it with the tip of my spear. I moved it around to make sure it's dead. After poking it several times, it stays limp, I realized I did it! I took down my very first beast in the forest!

I do a small victory dance, while punching the air. After all the excitement faded I picked up the bird and checked it out. It looks to be a hawk,

I can't be too sure, I think I remember seeing it on a nature channel on tv.

While taking a few steps over to the deceased rabbit, I noticed the hawk seems to be moving…..

I put a finger in front of its beak and now I know it's unconscious.

Now I'm in a dilemma, do I eat the bird. Or do I try to train it into a pet, and hunting buddy?

I heard on tv that hawks are great hunting companions.

I feel around the bird and notice there isn't much meat to eat.

I can't decide so I quickly placed down the hawk near the bunny. I proceeded to bleed the rabbit out, and then I grabbed them both and started heading home.

As I walked home, the sun was starting to set. I checked on the hawk to see if it's still unconscious, then I skinned the rabbit near the campfire and started cooking it.

I grabbed the hawk and started looking for thin small branches to split to make rope fibres.

As I collected the branches, the hawk started showing signs of movement and opened its eyes.

It looked confused.'???' I quickly threw it down on the ground, and grabbed my spear and twisted my body and swung at it again.'Thunk!'

I used my spear to poke at the hawk and once I confirmed that the Hawk is indeed unconscious I started collecting more branches.

Once I think I have enough, I'll bring the branches and hawk to the campfire. I placed down the branches and placed the hawk where I could keep my eye on it.

I roasted the rabbit and consumed it. Even though there's no seasoning or salt, rabbit meat tastes way better than fish.

Well to be honest anything tastes better than fish to me at this point.

As I finished up my meal once again the hawk showed signs of movement. Since I'm already used to doing this, I'm not nervous anymore.

I quickly grabbed my spear and swing. This time just before the hawk gets knocked out it makes a sad "kee-eeeee-arr"

 I feel kinda guilty…. 'Thunk'

"Meh" shrug, my shoulders, and move on.

I split the collected branches and twist them into rope. Then I looked through and appreciated the beautiful feathers on the wings. I noticed that one of the wings seems to be damaged.

This must be the reason why the hawk was eating on the ground and not high up in the trees.

On the TV nature channel I once saw a hawk's eating habits, and it likes to eat in high up places to feel safe.

I must be super lucky to chance upon this wonderful opportunity.

(the hawk was also super unlucky to have met me)

Anyways I tie up the wings of the hawk and then tie up the body.

I quickly cleaned the rabbit fur, wrapped it around the hawk, then tied it up again. I proceeded to tie up its beak and used the extra leather to make a small little hood to cover its eyes.

Looks like I'm not alone anymore. I have a new friend now. "Yay!" time to head to bed.

The sun is about to fully set. I placed the hawk near the boar blanket. Then just before I head off to sleep, I say. "Good night Mr. Hawk."

A new day and a new friend. What a great way to start off the day.

As I wake up and pat Mr. hawk. I boil some drinking water and wash myself. I then bring in the hall of fish from the net in the river. I set them to smoke by the fire.

For breakfast I consumed some leftover rabbit meat with fish…..

Anyways I checked the pit traps and found two bunny rabbits, the day can't get any better! I processed the rabbits and prepared them for lunch and dinner.

While finding nothing to do I clean the hide and start tanning them. I had a workout with new vigor and passion.

As I feel the strain and ache of my muscles, I know this is what progress feels like. I smile to myself, feeling content.

As the sun started to set, I finished the second rabbit I caught today.

I seem to remember I brought a friend home and forgot all about him. I guess now is a good time to do so.

I head home to see a tied up hawk twitching...

I removed the hood that covered his eyes and untied his beak.

Then it stopped moving...….

Is it dead? After checking the hawk is still breathing it's just in shock.

I then made eye contact with him. But he's still unresponsive so I bring out my spear and twist my body…..

As I was about to swing it started screaming "kee-eeeee-arr!" "ke-eee-arr?" "kee-arr...."

I guess my mother was right, if you beat something enough times it might just work.

So grab my new friend and stroke its head, it doesn't seem to be aggressive anymore.

I shall name you Kirkos because in ancient Greek, back in my world that was the name for hawk..

"Kirkos" then shakes its head side to side. I then nod my head.

Kirkos shook his head again. I nod again.

He shakes it again, I bring out my wood spear…..

He nods his head, and I smile.

I tell him " you know I'm jealous of you since you have a name now, but I still don't."

Kirkos tilts his head to the side?

I bring out some food for Kirkos and make him eat out of my hand, he bites me at first but I bring my spear and he starts to comply.

After feeding him I tell Kirkos "Wait here." I head off to make a baby harness out of rope, so I can bring him to do my daily activities tomorrow.

After crafting the harness, the sun is about to set so I head to bed. I re-cover Kirkos with his hood and tie up his beak. " good night Kirkos"
