Chapter 93 - Chapter 93: The First Crossing

The words remained etched into the ancient stone.

The First Crossing Awaits.

No one spoke.

The chamber was silent except for the soft hum of the restored bridge.

Adrian stood before the glowing inscription, reading it over and over, hoping the meaning would somehow change.

It didn't.

Lyra was the first to move.

She stepped beside him, her fingers tracing the ancient runes without touching them.

"This inscription wasn't here before."

The Warden nodded.

"It could not appear before."

Adrian looked at the guardian.

"Why?"

"Because there was no Bridgekeeper."

The title hung in the air.

Bridgekeeper.

Not Bearer.

Not Guardian.

Something new.

Elyan turned toward Adrian.

"The bridge has accepted you."

Adrian sighed.

"I really wish these ancient powers would ask before giving me titles."

For the first time in what felt like forever, Lyra laughed.

It was quiet.

Brief.

But genuine.

Even the Warden's stern expression softened for the smallest moment.

The tension eased.

Only for a heartbeat.

Then the bridge pulsed again.

The circle of light expanded across the chamber floor.

The ancient rings rotated into a perfect alignment.

A path of shimmering silver stretched from Adrian's feet to the center of the fracture.

The bridge was opening.

Not fully.

Just enough.

Elyan's eyes widened.

"It's inviting you."

Adrian frowned.

"Inviting me where?"

Instead of answering, Elyan simply looked toward the path.

"I think..."

He hesitated.

"...it wants to show you."

The Warden stepped between Adrian and the bridge.

"No."

Adrian blinked.

"No?"

"It is too dangerous."

Lyra folded her arms.

"You don't know that."

"I know enough."

The guardian's voice echoed through the chamber.

"The First Crossing has not been attempted in thousands of years."

Adrian rubbed the glowing mark on his wrist.

"So we're back to me doing something nobody has done before."

He smiled weakly.

"Starting to notice a pattern."

No one smiled back.

The bridge pulsed once more.

A single step of light appeared beyond the edge of the fracture.

Then another.

Then another.

Like a staircase reaching into another reality.

Adrian stared.

"I don't think it's asking twice."

Elyan nodded slowly.

"The bridge chooses its own moments."

Lyra looked at Adrian.

"If you go..."

She paused.

"...we may not be able to follow."

He nodded.

"I figured."

The Warden remained firm.

"I advise against this."

Adrian looked at the guardian.

"You also advised sealing the bridge forever."

Silence.

The Warden lowered its gaze.

"I did."

"And you were wrong."

Another pause.

"Yes."

The single word carried enormous weight.

Adrian stepped closer.

"I appreciate your caution."

He smiled faintly.

"But I don't think fear gets to make this decision anymore."

The guardian stepped aside.

Not because it agreed.

Because it trusted him.

That realization struck Adrian harder than he expected.

The Warden—who had spent centuries protecting the seal—had just entrusted its future to him.

He took a slow breath.

Then placed one foot onto the first step of light.

Nothing happened.

The bridge remained calm.

Warm.

Welcoming.

He took another step.

The chamber began to fade behind him.

The light around him thickened into a shimmering mist.

Lyra's voice reached him one last time.

"Come back."

Adrian smiled over his shoulder.

"I'll try."

Then—

The world disappeared.

---

He wasn't falling.

He wasn't walking.

He simply... arrived.

A vast expanse stretched before him.

Unlike the silver-black landscape where he had met Auren, this place was alive.

Floating islands drifted through endless skies.

Rivers of light flowed upward instead of down.

Trees with crystal leaves swayed in a wind that carried faint melodies.

Every step Adrian took caused flowers made of pure light to bloom beneath his feet before fading away.

He looked around in awe.

"This is..."

Elyan's voice echoed gently beside him.

"Home."

Adrian turned.

Elyan stood there.

Not as a shifting figure of light.

But as a solid person.

Tall.

Graceful.

With silver hair that shimmered like moonlight and eyes that reflected countless stars.

Adrian blinked.

"So... this is what you really look like."

Elyan smiled.

"Close enough."

Before Adrian could respond, another voice drifted through the luminous valley.

"You finally returned."

Both of them turned.

A young woman stood atop a nearby hill.

She wore flowing robes woven from strands of silver light.

Her calm blue eyes rested on Elyan.

Then shifted to Adrian.

She smiled.

"So..."

Her gaze lingered on the glowing mark upon Adrian's wrist.

"The new Bridgekeeper has arrived."

Adrian frowned.

"You know me?"

She shook her head.

"No."

A gentle smile crossed her face.

"But I knew someone would come."

Elyan stepped forward.

"Mira..."

His voice carried relief.

And sorrow.

The woman's smile faded.

"I wish this were a happier reunion."

She looked toward the distant horizon.

The beautiful sky was beginning to darken.

Far away...

A black tide crept across the light.

Slowly.

Patiently.

Unstoppably.

Mira closed her eyes.

"They found the bridge."

The warmth of the valley seemed to fade.

The melodies carried by the wind fell silent.

Adrian looked toward the approaching darkness.

His mark pulsed once.

Strong.

Steady.

Then, from somewhere within that endless black tide...

Thousands of golden eyes opened at once.

Watching.

Waiting.

The First Crossing had only just begun.
