Chapter 35 - Chapter 35 – Eyes Beneath Silence

I knew the moment I woke that something had changed.

Not in the obvious way. The academy still breathed the same—stone corridors humming with magic, students moving through routines, instructors watching with quiet authority. But beneath it all… something felt tighter. Controlled. Like the air itself was being held too carefully.

My shadows noticed first.

They didn't lash out. They didn't retreat.

They listened.

That alone made my chest tighten.

I dressed slowly, my fingers brushing against the fabric as I steadied my breathing. My thoughts drifted—uninvited—back to Kaelen. The rooftop. The way his hand had found mine without hesitation. The way I hadn't pulled away.

The way I hadn't wanted to.

I exhaled sharply.

Focus.

This wasn't the time to get lost in that.

The training grounds were already alive when I arrived, but the energy felt… different.

Structured.

Measured.

Watched.

My gaze found him immediately.

Valen.

Standing exactly where he always stood, but something about him felt sharper today. His posture was relaxed, but his eyes—his eyes were not idle. They moved deliberately, tracing connections, observing interactions.

Not just watching.

Studying.

I felt it like a weight pressing lightly against my skin.

And this time—

I didn't look away.

Our gazes met for the briefest moment.

And something in his expression shifted.

Not suspicion.

Not confirmation.

Interest.

My shadows tightened instantly.

"Lyra."

Kaelen's voice grounded me before the tension could settle too deeply.

I turned toward him, and just like that, the pressure eased slightly. He was already moving toward the center of the field, his presence commanding without effort.

"You're late," Cassian muttered, though there was less bite in his tone than before.

"I'm not," I replied calmly, stepping into position.

Nira grinned. "You are. Just a little."

Tarik said nothing, but his stance shifted subtly as I joined them, adjusting to include me without needing words.

Elsa gave me a small nod.

Steady. Acknowledging.

Present.

We were starting to move like a unit now.

Not perfect.

But close.

"Positions," Kaelen said.

We obeyed instantly.

That alone would have been impossible a few days ago.

The exercise began without warning.

Cassian struck first—lightning cutting sharply across the field, fast and aggressive. Nira responded immediately, wind redirecting the strike before it could destabilize formation.

Tarik grounded us.

Always grounding.

Earth rising just enough to absorb impact, not enough to restrict movement.

I stepped forward, shadows slipping outward, weaving through their magic—not overpowering, not disrupting.

Connecting.

Kaelen's light followed.

Not forcing.

Guiding.

The moment our magic touched, the air shifted.

It always did.

A quiet reaction. A pull. Something deeper than simple alignment.

I felt it—stronger than before.

And this time, I didn't fight it.

"Again," Kaelen ordered.

We moved faster.

Closer.

Better.

Mistakes still happened.

Cassian overextended once—his lightning striking too wide.

Nira compensated, but too sharply.

The formation faltered.

And then—

Elsa stepped in.

Not loudly.

Not forcefully.

But precisely.

Her hand lifted, her magic threading through the disruption, catching the imbalance before it broke completely.

It wasn't control.

It was correction.

The difference was everything.

The energy settled instantly.

Stable.

Balanced.

I felt my shadows pause—almost… acknowledging her.

Respect.

"That was clean," Kaelen said.

Not praise.

Recognition.

Elsa didn't react beyond a slight nod.

But I saw it.

The shift.

Cassian didn't argue.

Nira didn't joke.

Even Tarik's stance adjusted slightly, as if recalibrating his expectations.

She wasn't just part of the group anymore.

She was necessary.

We ran the exercise again.

And again.

Each time sharper.

Each time closer.

Until the six of us weren't reacting anymore.

We were anticipating.

But through it all—

Valen watched.

Always.

I felt it during a misstep.

A small one.

Barely noticeable.

My shadows hesitated for half a second too long.

And I knew—

He saw it.

Training ended, but the tension didn't.

It followed me.

Quiet.

Persistent.

"You felt it too," Kaelen said later.

We were walking along the outer corridor, away from the others.

Not hiding.

But not in the open either.

"Yes," I admitted.

"He's not just observing anymore," I added.

Kaelen nodded once. "He's narrowing focus."

"On us."

"On you," he corrected gently.

I stopped walking.

"That's worse."

His gaze softened slightly.

"Only if you face it alone."

The words settled between us.

Familiar now.

Dangerous in a different way.

We moved to the rooftop again.

It was becoming a habit.

Or maybe something more.

"You trust them?" he asked quietly.

"The group?"

"Yes."

I thought about it.

Nira's loyalty.

Tarik's steadiness.

Cassian's reluctant alignment.

Elsa's quiet control.

"Yes," I said finally.

Then softer—

"I'm starting to."

"And me?"

The question wasn't teasing.

It wasn't light.

It was real.

I looked at him.

Really looked at him.

At the way he stood—not as a prince, not as a leader—but as someone waiting.

Not demanding.

Not assuming.

Waiting.

"Yes," I said.

The silence that followed wasn't empty.

It was full.

Heavy.

Fragile.

He stepped closer.

Not enough to overwhelm.

Just enough to matter.

"Lyra…"

My name in his voice felt different tonight.

Lower.

Closer.

I didn't move.

Didn't step back.

Didn't look away.

For a moment—

I thought he might say it.

And maybe…

I was ready to hear it.

But then—

My shadows shifted.

Sharp.

Alert.

Not here.

Not now.

I turned slightly, my gaze moving instinctively toward the academy below.

Nothing.

No movement.

No figure.

But the feeling remained.

"We're not alone," I said quietly.

Kaelen's expression hardened instantly.

Not fear.

Readiness.

"I know," he replied.

And somewhere—

beyond sight,

beyond sound,

beyond certainty—

someone was watching.
