Chapter 36 - Chapter 36 – The Edge of Control

I shouldn't have gone back to his room.

I knew that before I even reached the door.

Knew it in the way my shadows curled tighter around me, not in warning—but in anticipation. Knew it in the way my heartbeat refused to steady no matter how slowly I breathed.

And still—

I knocked.

The door opened almost immediately.

Kaelen stood there, like he had been expecting me.

Not surprised.

Not questioning.

Just… there.

Waiting.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The silence wasn't awkward.

It was heavy.

Charged.

"I wasn't sure you would come," he said quietly.

"I wasn't sure either," I admitted.

That much was true.

But I hadn't turned away.

He stepped aside, letting me in.

This time, I didn't hesitate.

The door closed behind me with a soft click that felt louder than it should have.

Final.

"You felt it today," I said, turning toward him. "During training."

It wasn't a question.

His jaw tightened slightly.

"Yes."

"Valen."

"He's getting closer," Kaelen said. "Not physically. But… understanding."

My shadows stirred at that.

Understanding was more dangerous than suspicion.

"And the others?" I asked.

"They're being watched too. But not like you."

Of course not.

Silence stretched again—but this time, it shifted.

Less about danger.

More about… us.

"You shouldn't be here," Kaelen said suddenly.

My brows lifted slightly. "And yet, I am."

His gaze darkened—not with anger.

With restraint.

"That's the problem."

Something in my chest tightened.

Not fear.

Something sharper.

More dangerous.

"Then tell me to leave," I said quietly.

He didn't.

Instead, he stepped closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like he was approaching something unpredictable.

Something that could either steady him—or ruin him.

My shadows reacted instantly, lifting slightly around me—but not defensively.

They reached.

Toward him.

His light answered.

Soft at first.

Then stronger.

The air between us changed.

"Lyra…"

My name in his voice felt like a warning.

Or a promise.

I wasn't sure which.

"I'm not leaving," I said.

That was all it took.

The distance between us disappeared.

His hand found my arm first—firm, grounding, like he needed to be sure I was real.

I didn't pull away.

Didn't even think about it.

My shadows curled around his wrist instinctively, not trapping—

Holding.

"Do you understand what you're doing?" he asked, his voice lower now.

Closer.

"No," I said honestly.

Then softer—

"But I know I don't want to stop."

Something in his expression broke.

Not control.

Not entirely.

But enough.

He pulled me closer.

This time, the kiss wasn't hesitant.

It wasn't careful.

It wasn't just reassurance.

It was deeper.

My fingers curled into his shirt as his hand moved to my back, pulling me flush against him. Heat spread instantly, sharp and overwhelming, my shadows flaring before settling again—adjusting, aligning with the intensity.

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

The academy.

The danger.

Valen.

The traitor.

All of it.

Gone.

There was only this.

Only him.

The kiss deepened, turning from a question into an answer neither of us was ready to voice. Kaelen's taste was like the air before a storm—sharp, electric, and completely consuming. My shadows didn't just settle; they wove through the light radiating from his skin, a chaotic dance of obsidian and gold that pulsed with the rhythm of our hearts.

He backed me toward the edge of his desk, his hands sliding from my waist to my jaw, his thumbs tracing the line of my cheekbones with a desperation that made my knees weak. I reached up, my fingers tangling in the soft hair at the nape of his neck, pulling him closer until there wasn't a breath of space left between us.

The heat was dizzying. It wasn't just the friction of skin on skin; it was the way our powers were reacting, bleeding into one another until I couldn't tell where my darkness ended and his light began.

"Lyra," he murmured against my lips, his voice a ragged wreck of its usual composure. "If we do this... there's no going back. Not for me."

"I know," I whispered, my breath hitching as his lips found the sensitive hollow of my throat.

His hands moved to the hem of my tunic, the touch searing even through the fabric. I arched toward him, my eyes fluttering shut, the world narrowing down to the scent of him and the thrum of power vibrating in the floorboards. The shadows in the corners of the room surged, responding to the spike in my adrenaline, reaching out to shroud us in a private, velvet cocoon.

He started to lift the fabric, his fingers brushing the bare skin of my ribs—

And then.

My shadows snapped tight.

Not emotional.

Not reactive.

Instinct.

I froze.

Kaelen felt it immediately.

"What is it?"

"I—" I turned sharply, my gaze locking onto the far corner of the room.

The shadows there didn't move.

They didn't flicker.

They didn't breathe.

They watched.

Cold.

Still.

Wrong.

Kaelen's light flared instantly, bright and controlled, filling the room in a sharp pulse.

"Show yourself."

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then—

The shadows shifted.

Not mine.

Something else stepped forward.

Not fully formed.

Not fully visible.

But present.

A silhouette.

Watching.

Listening.

"You're progressing faster than expected," a voice said softly.

Not loud.

Not threatening.

But precise.

My chest tightened.

"That's not possible," I said under my breath.

But it was.

Kaelen moved slightly in front of me—not blocking, not shielding—

Positioning.

"Who are you?" he demanded.

The figure didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

It tilted its head slightly.

Like it was studying us.

Together.

"Interesting," it murmured.

My shadows lashed outward instinctively—but the moment they touched the figure—

They slipped through.

Not solid.

Not fully there.

Projection.

"Not brave enough to show yourself?" I snapped.

A pause.

Then—

A faint laugh.

"I'm closer than you think."

The words settled into the room like poison.

Kaelen's light sharpened.

"Then come forward."

"Soon."

The figure flickered.

Faded.

Gone.

Silence crashed back in.

My heart was still racing—but not from before.

Not from him.

From that.

"They know," I said quietly.

Kaelen didn't deny it.

"They've been watching longer than we thought," he said.

My shadows curled tightly around me again—but this time, not in calm.

In warning.

Whatever this was—

It wasn't distant anymore.

It was inside the academy.

And it had just found us.

I looked at Kaelen.

Really looked at him.

And this time—

There was no space left for denial.

"This changes everything."

His gaze didn't waver.

"I know."

And for the first time—

We weren't preparing for danger.

We were already inside it.
