Lyra's POV
The arena slowly emptied after the Trial of Control, but the unease it left behind clung to me like smoke.
Students whispered as they walked past.
Some glanced at me quickly before looking away.
Others stared openly.
I kept my head down and walked toward the courtyard, trying to pretend nothing unusual had happened. But the moment replayed in my mind again and again.
The shadow creature.
The chain of darkness that had burst from the floor.
The silence that followed.
I hadn't meant to use it.
But instinct had taken over.
And someone had seen.
Kaelen.
The thought made my stomach tighten.
The courtyard fountain glittered under the afternoon sun when I arrived. Students gathered in small groups, talking excitedly about the trial.
"Did you see the lightning spell from the noble boy in Group Two?"
"One of the girls nearly burned down the corridor!"
"They say three students lost control completely."
Their voices blended together until they became background noise.
I sat on the edge of the fountain, staring at the water.
Control.
That was the word the instructors kept repeating.
But how could I control something I barely understood?
The shadow magic inside me stirred quietly, as if aware of my thoughts.
It felt… pleased.
I shivered.
"Rough trial?"
I looked up to see Nira approaching with two cups of steaming tea.
She handed one to me and sat beside me.
"You did well," she said. "I saw part of your group coming out of the corridor. People looked… shaken."
I hesitated.
"Did you hear anything strange?"
She tilted her head.
"Strange how?"
My fingers tightened around the warm cup.
"About me."
Nira studied me carefully.
"Only that you handled the creatures better than most. Why?"
I shook my head quickly.
"No reason."
She didn't push further, but her curious gaze lingered on me.
Before she could ask another question, a shadow fell across the fountain.
A tall figure stepped between us.
Prince Kaelen.
Nira immediately straightened.
"Your Highness."
He nodded politely but kept his eyes on me.
"Lyra. Walk with me."
My heart skipped.
That wasn't a request.
The academy gardens were quiet in the late afternoon. Tall trees blocked most of the sunlight, leaving the paths wrapped in cool shade.
Kaelen didn't speak at first.
He walked slowly beside me, his hands behind his back, his expression thoughtful.
Finally, he stopped near a stone archway covered in ivy.
"You used shadow magic in the trial."
It wasn't a question.
I froze.
"I—"
He raised a hand slightly.
"Relax. I'm not here to report you."
I studied him carefully.
"Then why are you here?"
Kaelen leaned against the archway.
"Because what you did shouldn't be possible."
My pulse quickened.
"The academy constructs those shadow creatures with controlled magic. They're designed to resist manipulation."
His amber eyes locked onto mine.
"Yet you subdued one instantly."
I didn't answer.
What could I say?
That the shadows listened to me?
That sometimes they whispered?
He watched my silence and sighed softly.
"You don't understand your own power yet."
Something in his tone softened.
"But you will."
I crossed my arms defensively.
"You seem very interested in it."
"I am."
His honesty caught me off guard.
"Why?"
Kaelen looked up at the darkening sky.
"Because shadow magic hasn't existed in this kingdom for over two hundred years."
My chest tightened.
"And yet… here you are."
The wind rustled the leaves above us.
For a long moment neither of us spoke.
Finally, I asked quietly,
"Are you afraid of it?"
His gaze returned to me.
"No."
He paused.
"But others will be."
As we walked back toward the academy buildings, Kaelen spoke again.
"Listen carefully, Lyra."
His voice was calm but serious.
"The moment the instructors confirm what you can do, your life will change."
"How?" I asked.
"You'll become valuable."
I frowned.
"That doesn't sound bad."
He gave a faint smile.
"Valuable things attract attention. Powerful people. Dangerous people."
My stomach sank.
"And the Academy?"
"The Academy trains mages," he said. "But the Crown controls them."
A chill ran through me.
"So if they discover shadow magic…"
"They will decide how to use it."
The meaning behind his words was clear.
I wouldn't be a student anymore.
I'd be a weapon.
We reached the dormitory courtyard as evening bells rang across the academy.
Students were heading to dinner, their voices echoing through the stone corridors.
Before leaving, Kaelen turned to me one last time.
"For now, your secret is safe."
"Why?" I asked quietly.
"Why keep it?"
He studied me for a moment.
"Because you deserve time to understand what you are."
Then he added softly,
"And because I'm curious to see what you become."
With that, he walked away.
That night sleep refused to come.
I lay awake staring at the ceiling of the dormitory, listening to the quiet breathing of the other girls.
Kaelen's words echoed in my mind.
You'll become valuable.
Dangerous people.
The Crown will decide how to use it.
The shadows beneath my skin pulsed slowly, like a second heartbeat.
I lifted my hand in the darkness.
A small tendril of shadow curled around my fingers.
Alive.
Waiting.
For the first time, a frightening thought crossed my mind.
What if the kingdom feared shadow magic for a reason?
What if the stories about the Shadow Queens were true?
And what if…
I was becoming one of them?
