Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 – Flames of Rivalry

Lyra's POV

The academy courtyard buzzed with life the next morning.

Students moved between the stone pathways, their robes fluttering in the cool morning breeze. Magic sparks flickered here and there—small demonstrations of power, tiny competitions between friends.

Normally, I tried to blend into the background.

Today, that was impossible.

The moment I stepped into the courtyard, I felt the weight of curious eyes. Whispers followed me like ghosts.

"Did you hear about the library?"

"They say shadow magic exploded inside."

"Prince Kaelen was there…"

I clenched my jaw and kept walking.

Of course the rumors had spread.

The attack last night hadn't stayed quiet.

My shadows stirred at my feet, irritated by the attention.

"Lyra!"

I turned to see Nira jogging toward me, her wind magic swirling faintly around her boots.

Her eyes were wide.

"Where were you last night?" she demanded.

My heart skipped.

"I couldn't sleep," I said carefully. "I went to the library."

"That's exactly the problem!" she said. "Everyone's talking about it. Something happened there."

Before I could respond, a slow clap echoed across the courtyard.

"Impressive," a familiar voice drawled.

I didn't need to turn to know who it was.

Cassian.

He leaned against one of the stone pillars, lightning magic crackling faintly across his fingers. His silver eyes gleamed with mock amusement.

"Well done, Shadow Girl," he said loudly. "Destroying parts of the library on your first month here."

Murmurs spread across the courtyard.

Heat rushed to my face.

"I didn't destroy anything," I snapped.

Cassian pushed himself off the pillar and walked toward me.

"Really?" he said. "Because witnesses saw golden light and shadows exploding inside."

His gaze flicked briefly toward the palace tower where the royal students lived.

Then back to me.

"Care to explain why the Prince of Aetheria was training with you?"

My stomach tightened.

So people had noticed.

"I don't answer to you," I said coldly.

Cassian's smile sharpened.

"No," he agreed.

"But you will."

Lightning sparked around his hand.

"I challenge you to a duel."

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Nira grabbed my arm.

"Lyra, don't—"

But it was too late.

Cassian's voice carried across the courtyard.

"Unless, of course, your shadow magic is only impressive in the dark."

The insult stung.

My shadows flared instinctively.

"I accept," I said.

The courtyard erupted in excitement.

''You seemed to have forgotten what happened the last time you challenged me to a duel'' "Haven't had your fill of humiliation" i said.

That got him angry.

Within minutes, students gathered around the academy's training arena.

A glowing magical circle activated on the stone floor, designed to contain powerful spells.

Cassian stepped inside confidently.

I followed.

My heartbeat pounded.

Not fear.

Adrenaline.

Cassian rolled his shoulders lazily.

Lightning sparked violently around him.

The instructor overseeing the arena raised his hand.

"Duel rules apply," he said. "First to surrender loses."

He dropped his hand.

"Begin."

Cassian attacked immediately.

A bolt of lightning tore through the air toward me.

My shadows reacted instinctively, forming a wall that absorbed the strike with a loud crack.

Gasps erupted from the crowd.

Cassian raised an eyebrow.

"Well," he said. "That's new."

He launched three more lightning strikes in rapid succession.

This time I didn't just defend.

I attacked.

My shadows surged across the arena floor like living serpents.

Cassian jumped backward, lightning blasting them apart.

But the shadows reformed instantly.

Stronger.

Faster.

For a moment we circled each other.

Lightning against darkness.

Then Cassian smirked.

"Let's make this interesting."

Lightning exploded outward from his body.

The arena flashed white.

My shadows were pushed back violently.

I stumbled.

Cassian moved fast—too fast.

He appeared in front of me, lightning crackling in his palm.

"Game over."

Before he could strike—

A beam of golden light slammed into the arena.

Cassian jumped backward instinctively.

The entire courtyard fell silent.

Prince Kaelen stood at the edge of the arena.

Golden light radiated from him like a second sun.

His voice was calm.

But dangerous.

"That's enough."

Cassian scowled.

"This is a sanctioned duel, Your Highness."

Kaelen stepped forward.

"Then duel properly," he said.

His golden eyes shifted briefly to me.

"Or don't duel at all."

Something warm stirred in my chest.

Cassian noticed.

His expression darkened.

"Oh," he said slowly.

"I see."

Lightning crackled violently around him.

"So the rumors are true."

His gaze shifted between us.

"The prince is protecting the shadow witch."

The words ignited my temper.

"I don't need protection."

Cassian grinned.

"Then prove it."

He launched another lightning attack.

This time I was ready.

My shadows surged upward like a storm.

They wrapped around the lightning bolt and crushed it into sparks.

The crowd gasped again.

Cassian's smile disappeared.

Now he was serious.

Lightning exploded across the arena.

I countered with a wave of darkness.

The collision shook the barrier.

For several intense seconds we exchanged spells, lightning and shadow tearing through the arena.

Then something strange happened.

My shadows reacted.

Not to Cassian.

To Kaelen.

Golden light from the edge of the arena pulsed instinctively.

My magic responded.

Shadow energy surged stronger than before.

Cassian's eyes widened.

"What the—"

My shadows struck.

They wrapped around his lightning blast and forced him backward.

His feet skidded across the arena floor.

For the first time, Cassian looked genuinely shocked.

The instructor raised his hand.

"Enough!"

The magical circle faded.

The duel was over.

Cassian stared at me for a long moment.

Then he laughed quietly.

"Well," he said.

"You're more interesting than I thought."

His gaze flicked to Kaelen again.

Then back to me.

"This isn't over, Lyra."

He turned and walked away.

After the duel. The courtyard slowly emptied.

Students whispered excitedly as they left.

Nira hugged me tightly.

"That was amazing!"

"I almost got electrocuted," I muttered.

She grinned.

"Still amazing."

Eventually she left for class.

Leaving me alone with Kaelen.

The silence between us stretched.

Then he spoke.

"You shouldn't accept duels so easily."

I crossed my arms.

"You shouldn't interrupt them."

His lips twitched slightly.

"That lightning strike would've hit you."

"I had it handled."

"Barely."

We stared at each other.

Then something shifted.

Kaelen stepped closer.

The familiar pull between our magic ignited instantly.

My shadows curled around his golden light.

Alive.

Responsive.

Dangerous.

"You felt it again," he said quietly.

I nodded.

"Yes."

His gaze darkened slightly.

"Our powers are synchronizing faster than expected."

"Is that bad?" I asked.

"Not necessarily."

He paused.

"But it's dangerous."

His hand lifted slowly.

For a moment I thought he might touch my face.

Instead he brushed a strand of hair behind my ear.

The small gesture sent a shiver down my spine.

"We'll train again tonight," he said softly.

Then he stepped back.

And the moment was gone.

Neither of us noticed the figure watching from the academy tower.

A cloaked silhouette hidden in darkness.

The shadow cult scout from the library.

Their voice whispered into a glowing black crystal.

"The girl's power is growing."

A pause.

Then a low response echoed from the crystal.

"Good."

The scout smiled beneath their mask.

"Soon the Shadow Queen will awaken."
