Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: Voices in the Stone

The whispers inside the canyon did not fade. Instead they continued drifting through the narrow space between the towering stone walls, echoing in strange patterns that made it impossible to tell where the sounds were coming from. Liora stood still for a moment, holding the Moonheart tightly as its glow slowly brightened in response to the uneasy tension filling the Whispering Pass. Caelan stepped slightly closer to her, his eyes scanning the shadows ahead where the canyon curved sharply to the left. The rest of Sereth's companions had stopped moving as well, their hands resting near their weapons while they listened carefully to the soft murmuring sounds around them. For several seconds no one spoke. The only noises were the faint echoes drifting through the cliffs and the quiet crunch of loose gravel shifting under their boots as the wind moved through the canyon. Finally Caelan leaned closer to Liora and whispered, "Those echoes are definitely not just the wind." Liora nodded slowly. "I know." Sereth took a cautious step forward, raising one hand slightly to signal the group to remain calm. Her sharp eyes moved carefully along the rock walls, examining every shadow and narrow ledge above them. "Everyone stay quiet," she said in a low voice. "The pass distorts sound. We cannot tell how far away the source of those whispers might be." One of the cloaked travelers behind them shifted nervously. "Do you think something is following us?" Sereth shook her head slightly. "If it were following us, the echoes would move with us. These sounds are coming from deeper inside the canyon." Caelan glanced toward the bend in the path ahead. "So something is waiting there." Sereth did not answer, but the tension in her expression confirmed that the thought had crossed her mind as well. Liora took a slow breath and looked down at the Moonheart. The crystal's glow had grown brighter again, casting pale silver light across the rough stone walls surrounding them. The echoes seemed to react slightly to the light, shifting in strange rhythms that almost sounded like distant voices trying to form words. "The Moonheart feels… different here," she murmured quietly. Caelan looked at her. "Different how?" "Like it recognizes this place somehow," Liora said. Sereth overheard her and stepped closer. "That could make sense," she said thoughtfully. "These mountains were part of the same ancient region where the Moonheart's creators once lived." Caelan frowned slightly. "You mean the people who built the ruins in the valley?" Sereth nodded. "Yes. The Ashen Peaks were once part of their territory." Liora studied the canyon walls again. The stone here was darker than the rock in the valley, almost black in some places, and thin cracks ran across its surface like old scars. Something about the cliffs made her feel as though they were standing inside the remains of something much older than a simple mountain range. Suddenly one of the whispers echoed louder than the others. It slid along the stone walls in a long, drawn-out sound that almost resembled a breath. Everyone froze again. Caelan's hand moved instinctively to the hilt of his weapon. "Okay," he whispered. "That one definitely wasn't the wind." Sereth slowly walked a few steps forward until she reached the bend in the canyon path. She leaned slightly to look around the corner while keeping one hand raised to warn the others not to move yet. For a few seconds she said nothing. Then she stepped back toward the group. "The path continues," she said quietly. "But the canyon narrows further ahead." One of her companions asked, "Did you see anything?" Sereth shook her head. "No." Caelan sighed quietly. "That's somehow worse." Liora felt the Moonheart pulse again, stronger this time. The light flickered across the canyon walls, briefly illuminating small shapes carved into the rock. She blinked in surprise and stepped closer to examine them. "Sereth," she whispered. "Look at this." Sereth moved beside her and studied the stone carefully. Several faint symbols had been carved into the rock face, partially worn away by time but still recognizable as ancient runes similar to those they had seen in the valley ruins. "These markings are very old," Sereth said softly. "Older than the structures in the valley." Caelan leaned closer. "Are they warnings?" Sereth traced one of the faded symbols with her fingers. "Possibly. Or instructions." Liora raised the Moonheart slightly, allowing its light to shine more clearly across the carvings. As the silver glow touched the symbols, something unexpected happened. The runes flickered faintly with energy, almost as if they were responding to the crystal's presence. The whispers echoing through the canyon suddenly shifted again, becoming sharper and more chaotic. Caelan stepped back quickly. "Maybe shining magical artifacts on ancient runes isn't the best idea." Liora lowered the Moonheart slightly, but the faint glow remained on the carvings. Sereth's eyes widened in realization. "These runes were designed to react to Moonheart energy," she said quietly. Caelan blinked. "Meaning?" Sereth looked deeper into the canyon again. "Meaning the people who carved them expected the Moonheart to pass through here someday." Liora felt a small chill run through her. "So we're walking the same path the ancient guardians once used." Sereth nodded slowly. "Yes." Another whisper echoed through the canyon then, louder than before. This time the sound clearly came from somewhere ahead of them, deep within the narrow stone passage. It was not quite a voice, not quite the wind, but something in between. The group fell silent again. One of the travelers behind them whispered nervously, "Something is definitely in there." Caelan glanced at Sereth. "Any brilliant ideas?" Sereth thought for a moment before answering. "We continue forward slowly. If the ancient guardians used this pass, it must lead somewhere important." Liora nodded. "The Moonheart seems to agree." Caelan gave a resigned sigh. "Of course it does." They began moving again, their steps careful and quiet as they followed the winding canyon path deeper into the Whispering Pass. The cliffs grew taller as they advanced, blocking out more of the sky until only a thin strip of pale light remained above them. The echoes grew stranger the farther they went. Sometimes the whispers sounded like distant conversations just beyond the edge of hearing. Other times they faded completely, leaving an unsettling silence behind. After nearly twenty minutes of slow walking the canyon suddenly widened slightly. The path opened into a small hollow surrounded by steep rock walls. At the center of the hollow stood something unexpected. Liora stopped immediately when she saw it. "Is that… a statue?" Caelan stepped beside her and squinted at the shape rising from the ground. It was a tall stone figure carved from the same dark rock as the surrounding cliffs. The statue depicted a robed guardian holding a circular object in its hands—a shape almost identical to the Moonheart. Sereth approached the statue carefully, studying its worn surface. "This confirms it," she said quietly. "The ancient guardians traveled through this pass." Liora stepped closer to the statue, raising the Moonheart again. As the silver light touched the stone figure, the carved object in the statue's hands began to glow faintly with the same energy. The whispers surrounding the canyon suddenly stopped. Complete silence fell over the hollow. Caelan frowned slightly. "I don't like that." Sereth looked around the quiet canyon walls. "Neither do I." For several seconds nothing happened. Then the ground beneath the statue trembled very slightly. Liora felt the vibration through her boots and quickly stepped back. The stone base of the statue shifted with a low grinding sound as hidden mechanisms deep beneath the rock slowly awakened after centuries of silence. Caelan stared at the moving stone in disbelief. "Okay," he muttered. "Now we've definitely triggered something." The statue continued to shift slowly, revealing the outline of a narrow stone doorway opening in the cliff wall behind it. Liora looked at Sereth in surprise. "A hidden entrance?" Sereth nodded slowly, clearly just as astonished. "It appears the pass was more than just a path through the mountains." The doorway finally opened completely, revealing a dark tunnel leading deeper into the rock. Cold air drifted out from the passage, carrying with it the faint scent of ancient dust and something else—something metallic and unfamiliar. Caelan looked at the opening, then back at Liora with a crooked smile. "Let me guess," he said. "The Moonheart wants us to go inside." Liora stared into the darkness of the hidden tunnel as the crystal in her hands pulsed brightly again. "Yes," she said quietly. "I think it does." And somewhere deep within the mountains of the Ashen Peaks, something ancient seemed to awaken as the hidden doorway slowly revealed the next step on their dangerous journey toward the forgotten secrets of the Moonheart.
