The journey toward the Ashen Peaks began under a cold gray sky that slowly brightened as the sun rose over the valley behind them. Liora walked near the front of the group beside Sereth while Caelan followed slightly behind with two members of the order. The path leading away from the silent valley climbed gradually through rolling hills covered in tall grass and scattered stone formations that looked like the worn bones of some ancient giant buried beneath the earth. The Moonheart rested in Liora's hands again, its silver glow faint in the daylight but still steady, like a quiet guide pointing them forward. For the first few hours no one spoke much. The group moved carefully and efficiently, following Sereth's directions along narrow trails that twisted between rocky slopes and small streams flowing down from the distant mountains. Every so often Liora glanced back toward the valley they had left behind, but eventually the cliffs closed around the path and the ruins disappeared completely from view. By midday the Ashen Peaks had grown much larger on the horizon. Their dark stone ridges rose sharply into the sky, the highest summits partially hidden behind drifting clouds. The closer the group came to them, the more the landscape began to change. The grassy hills slowly gave way to rougher ground covered in gray dust and broken rock. Even the air felt different, cooler and heavier, carrying a faint scent of minerals and distant storms. Caelan walked up beside Liora as the trail became steeper. "Those mountains look even worse up close," he muttered quietly. Liora smiled faintly. "You're the one who said dangerous ruins sound normal now." Caelan shrugged. "Normal doesn't mean pleasant." Sereth overheard them and glanced back over her shoulder. "We should reach the outer slopes before sunset if we keep moving." One of the cloaked travelers behind her asked, "Will we pass through the Whispering Pass today?" Sereth shook her head slightly. "Tomorrow morning." Liora noticed the name immediately. "Whispering Pass?" Sereth slowed her pace slightly so Liora could walk beside her. "It's the canyon I showed you on the map last night. A narrow path through the first ridge of the Ashen Peaks." Caelan raised an eyebrow. "Let me guess. It has a name like that for a reason." Sereth's expression remained calm. "The wind creates strange echoes there. Some travelers claim the sounds resemble voices." Caelan looked unimpressed. "Just wind then." Sereth did not answer immediately. After a moment she said quietly, "Most likely." By late afternoon the group finally reached the foothills of the Ashen Peaks. The terrain changed dramatically there. The soft earth of the hills vanished completely, replaced by jagged black rock and long stretches of gray gravel that crunched beneath their boots. Narrow streams cut through the stone in winding paths, their water unusually cold and clear. The sky above the mountains seemed darker somehow, even though the sun had not yet set. They made camp near the base of a tall rock wall where the wind was weaker. Small fires were lit between clusters of stone while the travelers rested after the long climb. Liora sat near the edge of the camp with the Moonheart glowing softly in her hands. From their position she could see the entrance of a narrow canyon not far away. Two massive stone cliffs formed its walls, creating a dark passage leading deeper into the mountains. "That must be the pass," Caelan said as he joined her, following her gaze. Liora nodded. "It doesn't look very welcoming." Caelan grinned slightly. "None of the places we've visited lately do." Sereth approached them carrying a small metal cup of water. "Get some rest tonight," she said. "The Whispering Pass is not dangerous in the way you might expect, but it requires attention." Caelan leaned back against a rock. "Meaning?" Sereth looked toward the canyon entrance. "The cliffs inside the pass amplify sound. Even small noises echo strangely. If we are not careful we might attract… attention." Liora frowned slightly. "Attention from what?" Sereth hesitated for a moment. "Creatures that live in the deeper parts of the mountains." Caelan sighed. "Of course there are creatures." Liora laughed quietly despite the tension. "At least this time we know in advance." Night slowly settled across the mountains, bringing with it a cold wind that whistled softly through the rocky slopes. The group finished their meal in silence, each person lost in their own thoughts about the path ahead. Liora eventually lay down near the fire with the Moonheart resting beside her. The crystal's light reflected faintly on the surrounding rocks, creating soft silver patterns that reminded her of the carvings in the ancient ruins. Sleep came slowly again. The mountains felt different from the valley, more restless somehow. Several times during the night she thought she heard distant sounds echoing between the cliffs, though she could never be certain if they were real or just the wind moving through the peaks. When morning finally arrived the air was colder than the day before. Thin mist drifted between the rocks as the travelers packed their supplies and prepared to enter the pass. Sereth gathered everyone near the edge of the canyon entrance before they continued. "From this point forward we stay close together," she said quietly. "Do not shout, and avoid striking your weapons against stone." One of the travelers nodded. "Understood." Caelan glanced into the canyon. The walls rose high above them, narrowing the sky into a thin strip of pale blue. "Whispering Pass," he muttered. "Great name." Liora stepped forward beside him, holding the Moonheart close to her chest. The crystal's glow seemed slightly stronger again now that they were near the mountains. "Ready?" she asked. Caelan smiled faintly. "Ready as always." Sereth gave a final nod and turned toward the narrow passage. The group began walking into the canyon, their footsteps echoing softly against the towering cliffs. Almost immediately the strange acoustics of the pass became clear. Even the smallest sounds bounced from one rock wall to another, creating faint overlapping whispers that drifted through the air like distant voices. Liora listened carefully as they walked. At first the echoes sounded random, nothing more than the wind mixing with the sound of their movement. But after several minutes she began to notice something unusual. Some of the echoes did not seem to match their footsteps at all. She slowed slightly and looked at Caelan. "Do you hear that?" she whispered. Caelan tilted his head, listening. Faint sounds moved through the canyon walls—soft murmurs carried by the wind, almost forming words before dissolving into meaningless echoes. "Yeah," he said quietly. "I hear it." Ahead of them Sereth had also stopped walking. Her expression had grown more serious as she listened to the whispers moving through the pass. One of the travelers behind her asked softly, "Is that normal?" Sereth did not answer immediately. Instead she looked deeper into the canyon where the path curved out of sight between the cliffs. Finally she said quietly, "No." Liora felt the Moonheart pulse suddenly in her hands, brighter than before. The whispers drifting through the canyon seemed to grow louder for a moment, echoing strangely between the towering stone walls. Caelan stepped closer to her, his hand moving toward the hilt of his weapon. "Tell me that's just the wind," he murmured. Sereth stared into the shadowed passage ahead, her eyes narrowing slightly. "I wish it was." The whispers continued to echo softly through the narrow canyon as the travelers stood frozen for a moment, realizing that the path through the Whispering Pass might not be as simple as they had hoped. Somewhere deeper within the twisting stone corridor, something was moving, and the mountains of the Ashen Peaks were beginning to reveal the first hints of the dangers hidden within them.
