Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 – Breaking Into the War of Gundams

Darkness.

Floating.

Duran and Teresa curled together inside the space-time machine.

Duran had increased the machine's power so it could tow their ship along. Calling it a spaceship was generous—it looked more like a giant iron coffin.

It had no beauty at all.

Still, as a souvenir it had character. Once they settled somewhere, Duran planned to store it inside a Capsule.

Duran didn't fully understand how capsules worked, but he knew how to build them.

Capsules required:

a spatial core

the capsule shell itself

Luckily, Duran had plenty of both.

Which meant he could store almost anything inside them.

With no reference points in the darkness of space, the iron ship drifted through the universe.

Suddenly Teresa pointed outside.

"Husband, look!"

A blue planet appeared in the distance.

"Lucky," Duran said with a grin.

"Looks like we won't have to drift in space forever."

"Since we're so close to Earth… let's take a photo."

The iron ship kept moving forward.

Unfortunately it used the most primitive single-direction rocket engine.

Which meant it couldn't change course.

Soon the ship flew directly into an asteroid field.

The ship had no radar.

In fact, aside from the ignition system it had almost no electronics at all.

But its hull was made from the strongest metal from the Claymore world.

Even bombs couldn't destroy it.

Still, collisions were unavoidable.

Asteroids scraped across the hull, leaving deep scars across the metal surface.

Neither Duran nor Teresa noticed the enormous wreckage ahead of them:

The remains of Junius 7.

Their iron coffin smashed straight into it.

The two of them steadied themselves.

"Looks like we've landed," Duran said.

"Want to take a spacewalk, dear?"

They put on space suits.

Teresa even carried her greatsword.

Walking across the ruins of Junius 7, Teresa found an open area and drew her sword.

She began swinging it experimentally.

Duran knew what was happening.

Teresa was suffering from transmigration syndrome.

Entering an unfamiliar world created anxiety.

She instinctively wanted to confirm that her strength still existed.

"My sword feels faster here than on the ground," Teresa said.

"But adjusting my posture is difficult. My body doesn't know how to apply force."

Duran nodded.

"Without air resistance your sword moves more freely."

"But in zero gravity, even a small movement becomes exaggerated."

Teresa looked toward the distant blue planet.

"What should we do now?"

"Let's live here for a while," Duran replied.

"This giant piece of junk looks like a man-made structure anyway."

Teresa looked around carefully.

"You're right… the ground is embedded with twisted steel structures."

"Impressive."

"If nothing went wrong in your homeland," Duran joked,

"in a few thousand years they might reach this level too."

"Assuming things like the Empire and the Organization don't return."

Teresa fell silent.

His words reminded her of her homeland.

And of Clare.

"In any case," Duran continued,

"our iron ship isn't flying again."

"So we'll stay here temporarily."

He took out a capsule.

"Recycling Vehicle!"

(Doraemon voice.)

They began collecting scrap from Junius 7.

With enough materials, Duran believed he could build another spaceship.

He stored the iron ship in a capsule as a souvenir.

Then he placed a Dragon Ball-style dome house on the wreckage.

The two of them moved in.

After activating the gravity generator, life inside the house felt almost normal.

The only difference was that they needed space suits when going outside.

Inside the house, Duran dressed like a middle-aged man on vacation:

beach shorts

slippers

no shirt

And began designing a new spaceship.

The iron coffin had been a primitive rocket.

This time Duran wanted something small and practical.

In reality he was simply modifying designs based on spaceships from the Dragon Ball world.

Meanwhile Teresa acted like a housewife.

She ironed their clothes.

Prepared meals.

Their daily life became peaceful and ordinary.

But a transmigrator's life could never remain peaceful forever.

One day, while Duran finished his ship blueprint and considered building a greenhouse to grow Senzu Beans, he noticed something strange.

The giant piece of wreckage beneath them…

Moved.

At first he didn't think much of it.

Everything moves in space, after all.

But then—

Huge robots appeared.

"Are those giants from space?" Teresa asked.

"I've never seen robots that big."

Duran found Teresa's innocent reaction adorable.

"They're just machines," he said.

"Tools created by humans."

"But I don't know why they're here."

Each robot was heavily armed.

"Doesn't look friendly," Duran muttered.

"Let's observe first."

Soon another group of robots arrived.

The Operation to Drop Junius 7 to Earth had begun.

Radical members of ZAFT, supported by certain factions on Earth, were attempting to push the debris colony toward Earth—

A plan that would slaughter countless Naturals.

Meanwhile, active ZAFT forces were trying to stop the operation.

Because such an act would ignite another war between Naturals and Coordinators.

"Ah… they're fighting," Teresa said.

Explosions bloomed like fireworks.

As the battle intensified, new machines appeared.

They had:

kettle-shaped heads

V-shaped antennae

"Gundams!"

Duran suddenly shouted.

His memory clicked into place.

This was the battlefield of Junius 7.

Which meant this world was Gundam SEED.

And the peace that had lasted for a year…

Was about to end.

Three Gundams built by PLANT but stolen by the Earth Alliance joined the battle.

Opposing them were the mobile suits from the Minerva, including those piloted by Shinn Asuka.

The battle escalated rapidly.

One side consisted of extremist Coordinators willing to sacrifice everything to drop Junius 7 onto Earth.

The other side was an elite ZAFT team desperately trying to destroy the colony debris before it reached Earth.

The battlefield erupted in chaos.

"Teresa," Duran said suddenly.

"Put on your space suit and stay inside the house."

"I just thought of something fun."

Without changing clothes—

Still wearing beach shorts and slippers—

Duran walked outside with only an oxygen helmet.

Then he shouted across the battlefield.

"INSOLENCE!"

His voice echoed through every communication channel.

"Communications are being jammed!" the officer Arthur shouted aboard the battleship Minerva.

On the bridge were:

Chairman Gilbert Durandal

Cagalli Yula Athha, leader of Orb

"What's happening?" Captain Talia Gladys asked calmly.

The Minerva crew were mostly trainees.

The captain had to remain composed.

The battlefield fell into confusion.

Duran's massive universal translator hijacked every communication channel.

All communication devices had become his loudspeakers.

Units suddenly lost contact with their allies.

"Can you locate the source?" Durandal asked calmly.

"I'm trying!"

Meanwhile on the battlefield, Rey's Zaku Phantom noticed something unusual.

A house.

Standing on the surface of Junius 7.

With its lights on.

On Rey's monitor he saw a bizarre sight:

Duran standing in front of the house.

Arms crossed.

Legs spread confidently.

"You dare disturb my backyard!"

"You are courting death!"

Finally the Minerva managed to change communication frequencies.

"This is the Minerva. Report the source of the anomaly!"

After several attempts, Rey responded.

"This is Rey."

"You won't believe this…"

"There's a person standing on Junius 7."

Silence filled the bridge.

If they didn't know Rey personally, they might have thought he had gone insane.

"Is it a wounded survivor?" asked Meyrin Hawke innocently.

"Does he need rescue?"

"No."

"He…"

Rey hesitated.

"He's not wearing a space suit."

"Then it must be a corpse," someone said.

"No."

Rey stared at the monitor.

"I can clearly see…"

"He's still alive."

And then Rey connected the monitor feed to the bridge.

Everyone aboard the Minerva saw it.

A man in beach shorts and slippers…

Standing calmly in the vacuum of space.

The war had just begun.

And Duran had already changed the story.
