Klaus's compound was quiet when I arrived.
The servants—humans, compelled into service—moved silently through the halls. Klaus himself was in the nursery, sitting beside a crib that held the most dangerous child in existence.
"She's sleeping," he said without looking up. "Four months old and already she dreams. I can feel it. Her power reaching out, touching things she doesn't understand."
"She'll learn."
"Will she?" He finally turned to face me. "I've lived a thousand years, Paradox. I've seen powerful children destroyed by forces they couldn't comprehend. My sister, my brothers—we were monsters from the start. But Hope... she's something else. Something new."
"You're afraid."
"Terrified." He said it without shame. "And I don't know how to protect her."
I sat beside him, looking down at the sleeping infant. Hope Mikaelson, first of her kind. The child who would either save this world or destroy it.
"You won't have to protect her alone," I said. "Someone came to me tonight. Called herself Oracle. She told me things—about Hope's future, about threats beyond this reality."
Klaus's expression hardened. "And you believe her?"
"I believe she was telling the truth. The question is what we do with it."
"What can we do? She's an infant. Her power is barely formed."
"Start now. Build connections. Train the people who will protect her. Create a network that spans more than just this city." I met his eyes. "I can help. I've been preparing for something like this without realizing it. Davina. Hayley. The pack. The relationships I've built—they're not just for this reality. They're foundations for something bigger."
Klaus studied me for a long moment. A thousand years of suspicion, weighing my words against everything he'd learned about survival.
"You're proposing an alliance. Not temporary. Not situational. Permanent."
"I'm proposing a family. One that protects its own."
He laughed—soft, genuine. "You're remarkable, Paradox. You know that? You've been here barely a year, and you've done what no one else could. Made me consider something beyond myself."
"Flattery won't change my answer."
"No." He extended his hand. "But acceptance will."
I took it.
