Chapter 38 - Chapter 2: The Stranger

She found me before I could find her.

I was walking through the Quarter the next evening, tracing the edges of the supernatural community, when a woman stepped out of a shop and directly into my path.

She was tall, dark-haired, with eyes that held no reflection. Not vampire—something else. Something that didn't quite fit the rules of this reality.

"Paradox." Her voice was smooth, accented with something I couldn't place. "I've been looking for you."

"You found me."

She smiled—a predator's smile, but not aggressive. Curious. "You're not what I expected. For someone who's traveled thirteen thousand realities, you've become remarkably... settled."

[IDENTIFICATION FAILED]

[Subject does not match any known supernatural classification]

[Recommend extreme caution]

"You know about my travels."

"I know about many things." She gestured toward a café down the street. "Walk with me. I promise I'm not here to fight."

I fell into step beside her, alert but not threatened—yet. The city moved around us, oblivious to the impossible conversation happening in its midst.

"I'm called Oracle," she said. "It's not my real name, but it serves."

"Oracle. Dramatic."

"So is Paradox." She glanced at me sidelong. "I'm here because something is happening. Something that affects more than just this reality. Something that might involve you."

"The ancestors?"

"Smaller. More personal." She stopped at the edge of Jackson Square, looking out at the cathedral. "There's a child in this city. A hybrid child. The first of her kind."

"Hope Mikaelson."

"Yes." Oracle turned to face me. "She's going to be powerful. More powerful than anyone in this reality understands. And when she grows, she'll attract attention. Not just from local threats—from things beyond."

"Dimensional predators."

"Among other things." Her expression was grave. "I've seen futures where she survives, thrives, becomes something beautiful. I've also seen futures where she's consumed by forces that make Klaus look like a child."

"And you want me to protect her."

"I want you to prepare her. Train her. Help her understand what she is before the world forces her to figure it out alone." Oracle stepped closer. "You're uniquely qualified. A dimensional traveler who's seen everything, knows everything, and has chosen to stay in one place for the first time in millennia. This is your purpose, Paradox. Whether you recognize it or not."

I considered her words. The weight of them. The truth I could feel beneath the surface.

"You've seen these futures?"

"I've seen possibilities. Nothing is fixed. But the choices made now will echo." She reached into her coat and produced a small object—a crystal, clear as water, humming with energy I'd felt before in realities far from this one. "This will help you evolve. It contains dimensional energy from outside your System's framework. Use it when you're ready."

I took the crystal. It was warm, alive, familiar in a way that made my chest ache.

"Why are you helping me?"

"Because I've watched you for a long time, Paradox. Through more realities than you know. And I think—" She smiled, and for a moment her eyes held depths that made even my thirteen thousand lifetimes feel small. "I think you're finally becoming what you were always meant to be."

She walked away before I could respond.

[QUEST GENERATED: THE HYBRID'S GUARDIAN]

[Objective: Protect and prepare Hope Mikaelson for dimensional threats]

[Reward: Evolution progress +20%, New abilities, ???]

[Time limit: Until Hope's power fully manifests]

[NOTE: This changes everything]

I stood in Jackson Square, holding a crystal that shouldn't exist, and felt the future shift around me.
