Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Messenger of the Sun

The Blood-Moon's Heart plummeted toward the jagged peaks, a dying leviathan of ruby and bone. From the palace balcony, Raen, Elena, and Kaelith watched as the flagship disintegrated against the permafrost, sending a shockwave that rattled the windows of the capital.

The silence that followed was heavy. The Vampire fleet had retreated into the Void-Gaps, but the sky remained a bruised, unnatural violet.

"We won," Kaelith breathed, her armor scorched and her mechanical eye flickering. She slumped against a pillar, clutching a data-pad containing the stolen Vampire manifests. "But my ship... my beautiful needle-ship is basically a pile of scrap metal now."

Elena didn't look at the wreckage. She was looking at her father, King Alaric, who stood surrounded by his personal guard. The King's gaze wasn't on the retreating enemy; it was fixed on Raen's matte-black skin.

"The Sun Empire sent us a prince," Alaric said, his voice as cold as the ice he commanded. "But you... you are something else. I have read the forbidden scrolls of the First Era. A body that consumes light is not a blessing, Raen Solis. It is a harbinger of the Great Devouring."

Raen met the King's eyes. His Rank 6 pressure, still volatile from the breakthrough, caused the frost on the floor to evaporate into steam. "I am the only reason your 'World-Glacier' isn't currently a Vampire's wine cellar, Alaric. If you want to debate my bloodline, do it while we rebuild."

Before the tension could snap into a confrontation, the air above the palace courtyard began to warp. The temperature skyrocketed, turning the falling snow into a scalding mist.

A pillar of pure, blinding gold light descended. Standing within it was a figure clad in armor so bright it was impossible to look at directly. This was a Solar Herald, a Rank 11 Law-Binder serving the First Emperor himself.

The Herald didn't land; he hovered three inches above the ground, his voice echoing with the weight of a thousand gongs.

"RAEN SOLIS. BY THE WILL OF THE ETERNAL ZENITH, YOUR EXILE IS CONCLUDED."

The Herald unfurled a scroll made of solidified sunlight.

"YOU ARE SUMMONED TO THE CAPITAL FOR THE 'TRIAL OF THE TEN HEIRS'. THE FIRST EMPEROR HAS DECREED THAT THE PUREST BLOOD SHALL INHERIT THE 'CROWN OF THE NEBULA'. FAIL TO APPEAR, AND THE SUN EMPIRE WILL DECLARE YOU A DEVIANT TO BE HARVESTED."

Elena stepped to Raen's side, her hand resting on the hilt of her rapier. "It's a trap. He knows you've grown too fast. If you go back now, you're walking into the lion's den."

"It's worse than that," Kaelith whispered, looking at her scanners. "The Herald's energy signature is connected to a massive gateway. He's not just a messenger; he's a biological anchor. If Raen refuses, the Herald will likely self-destruct, taking the city with him."

Raen looked at the Herald, then at the Axiom Shard tucked into his belt. He felt the pull of the second fragment—the one hidden within the Sun Empire's own treasury.

"I'll go," Raen said, his voice echoing with a finality that silenced the courtyard.

"Raen, no!" Elena protested.

"I'm not going back as a prince," Raen said, turning to her. A faint, dangerous glow flickered in his dark eyes. "I'm going back as a claimant. And I'm not going alone."

He looked at Kaelith. "Can you build a transport capable of breaching the Imperial Gate within forty-eight hours?"

Kaelith gave a jagged, manic grin. "If the King gives me access to the Frost-Born's ancient mana-forges and doesn't ask questions about why I'm stealing his royal jewelry? I can build you something that will make the First Emperor's palace look like a mud hut."

Elena looked at her father, then back at Raen. She stepped forward, her ice-essence flaring. "I'm coming too. If the Sun Empire wants to judge my fiancé, they'll have to judge the North along with him."

The Herald's golden mask remained expressionless. "YOU HAVE TWO MOONS TO REACH THE ZENITH. THE EMPEROR WAITS."

As the Herald vanished into light, Raen felt the Black-Body Law within him grow. It wasn't just hunger anymore; it was a premonition. The "Trial of the Ten Heirs" wasn't just a competition. It was the moment the First Emperor would try to "uninstall" him.

"Elena, Kaelith," Raen said as they walked toward the forges. "From this point on, we aren't just survivors. We are revolutionaries. If we enter that capital, we don't leave until the Sun itself bows."
