Chapter 11: Trapped
The Morning
Jay woke to Keifer's arms around her.
Warm.
Safe.
Perfect.
She smiled.
Pressed closer.
Didn't want to move.
But Keifer was already awake.
Watching her.
Those storm-gray eyes soft.
"Morning," he murmured.
"Morning.
You're staring."
"Always.
You're worth staring at."
She laughed.
Quiet.
Happy.
"You're ridiculous."
"You love it."
"I love you.
There's a difference."
He kissed her nose.
"There's no difference.
Not with us."
She couldn't argue with that.
---
Breakfast Chaos
Downstairs, the usual chaos awaited.
Keiran was already eating cereal.
Half of it on the floor.
The other half on his face.
Keigan was reading.
As always.
Ignoring his brother's mess.
Percy was stealing bacon from Aries's plate.
Aries was threatening him with a fork.
Mamma was refereeing.
Pappa was hiding behind his newspaper.
Jay sat down.
Keifer beside her.
Their knees touching under the table.
Mamma smiled at them.
"Good morning, my loves.
Big day today?
First day back at the office for both of you?"
Jay nodded.
Keifer nodded.
Jay was fully recovered from her head injury.
Keifer was fully recovered from his fever.
Time to return to normal life.
Keiran looked up.
"Kuya Jay going to work?
With Kuya Kai?
In the big building?"
Jay nodded.
"That's right, little monster.
Back to the office today."
Keiran considered this.
Then nodded seriously.
"Okay.
But come home.
Promise?"
Jay's heart melted.
"I promise, Keiran.
Always come home."
He nodded.
Satisfied.
Went back to his cereal.
---
The Office
Watson Enterprises loomed before them.
Glass and steel.
Touching the sky.
Jay looked up at it.
Remembered her first day.
How terrified she'd been.
How small she'd felt.
Now?
Now it felt like coming home.
Almost.
Keifer took her hand.
"You okay?"
She nodded.
"Yeah.
Just remembering.
First day here.
I was so scared."
He squeezed her hand.
"You were brave.
Bravest person I know."
She smiled.
"Let's go.
Work awaits."
---
The morning was busy.
Meetings.
Calls.
Emails.
Catching up after days away.
Jay fell back into the rhythm easily.
Keifer's assistant.
His right hand.
His everything.
Around noon, she took a break.
Grabbed coffee.
Chatted with other employees.
Felt normal.
Good.
She didn't know that in two hours, everything would change.
---
The Fire
It started small.
An electrical fault in the server room.
No one noticed.
By the time someone did, it was too late.
Smoke poured from the vents.
Alarms blared.
Sprinklers activated.
Panic spread.
Jay was on the 45th floor.
Getting files Keifer needed for a meeting.
The alarms went off.
She froze.
Heart racing.
Then the lights flickered.
Died.
Emergency lights kicked in.
Red.
Eerie.
Terrifying.
---
Evacuation
People flooded the stairwells.
Pushing.
Shouting.
Fleeing.
Jay grabbed the files.
Ran for the stairs.
But smoke was already pouring in.
Thick.
Black.
Choking.
She coughed.
Covered her mouth.
Tried to see.
The stairwell door was ahead.
So close.
She pushed toward it.
Then the floor lurched.
Something exploded below.
The building shook.
Jay fell.
Her head hit something.
Hard.
Not as hard as before.
But hard enough.
For a moment, everything went dark.
---
When she woke, the smoke was thicker.
The alarms were still screaming.
And the stairwell door was blocked.
Debris from the explosion.
Piled high.
Impassable.
Jay scrambled up.
Coughing.
Choking.
Eyes streaming.
She tried the door.
Wouldn't budge.
Tried again.
Nothing.
Panic clawed at her chest.
She was trapped.
Alone.
45 floors up.
Fire below.
Smoke filling the air.
---
Keifer
Keifer was on the ground floor when the alarms went off.
He saw people flooding out.
Saw panic.
Saw chaos.
And he didn't see Jay.
He grabbed a security guard.
"Jay!
My assistant!
Jasper Mariano!
Did she get out?"
The guard shook his head.
"I don't know, sir.
Everyone's evacuating.
I can't—
Keifer didn't wait.
He ran for the stairs.
People tried to stop him.
"Sir!
You can't go up there!
The fire—
He ignored them.
Pushed through.
Ran up.
45 floors.
His legs burned.
His lungs burned.
He didn't stop.
Jay.
Jay.
Jay.
Her name pounded in his head with every step.
---
45th Floor
He burst through the stairwell door.
Smoke everywhere.
Hard to see.
Hard to breathe.
"JAY!"
No answer.
Just the alarms.
Just the crackle of fire below.
He ran through the office.
Calling her name.
Desperate.
Terrified.
Then he saw her.
By the blocked stairwell.
Coughing.
Slumping against the wall.
"JAY!"
He reached her in seconds.
Pulled her into his arms.
She looked up.
Eyes wide.
Disoriented.
Relieved.
"Keifer?
Keifer, you came.
You came."
"Of course I came.
Always.
I'll always come."
---
She coughed.
Weak.
"I can't breathe.
The smoke—
The door is blocked—
I can't—
He held her face.
Made her look at him.
"Listen to me.
I'm getting you out.
But I need you to stay with me.
Okay?
Stay with me."
She nodded.
Trusting him completely.
He pulled off his jacket.
Wrapped it around her face.
To filter the smoke.
Helped her stand.
"We're going to the roof.
Helicopter rescue.
They'll be there.
Come on."
---
The Roof
They climbed.
Slowly.
Keifer half-carrying Jay.
She was weak.
Dizzy.
But fighting.
Always fighting.
The roof door was unlocked.
Thank god.
They burst into fresh air.
Both gasping.
Coughing.
Alive.
In the distance, sirens.
Helicopter blades.
Rescue coming.
Jay collapsed against Keifer.
Shaking.
Crying.
"I thought—
I thought I was going to die—
In there—
Alone—
He held her tight.
Kissed her hair.
Her forehead.
Her cheeks.
Her lips.
"I've got you.
I've got you.
You're safe.
I'm here."
She kissed him back.
Desperate.
Grateful.
Loving.
"Don't leave me.
Promise you won't leave me."
"Never.
Never, Jay.
You're stuck with me.
Forever."
---
The Rescue
The helicopter landed.
Paramedics rushed to them.
Oxygen masks.
Blankets.
Questions.
Jay was checked.
Smoke inhalation.
Mild concussion from the fall.
But alive.
Stable.
Okay.
Keifer refused treatment.
Refused to leave her side.
Held her hand through everything.
Even when they loaded her onto a stretcher.
Even when the helicopter lifted off.
Even when they landed at the hospital.
Mamma was there.
Pappa.
Aries.
Percy.
Keigan.
Keiran in Pappa's arms, crying.
They'd seen the news.
Rushed to the hospital.
Waited.
Prayed.
When Jay was wheeled in, Keiran broke free.
Ran to her.
Grabbed her hand.
"KUYA JAY!
You're okay!
You're okay!
I was so scared!
The TV said fire!
And you were inside!
And Kuya Kai was inside!
And—
Jay squeezed his hand.
Weak.
But there.
"I'm okay, little monster.
Kuya Kai saved me."
Keiran looked at Keifer.
Eyes wide.
"Kuya Kai is a hero."
Keifer shook his head.
"No.
I just—
I couldn't let her go."
Mamma hugged them both.
Crying.
Laughing.
Grateful.
"My brave boys.
My brave girl.
Thank god.
Thank god."
---
Hospital Room
Jay was admitted overnight.
Observation.
Smoke inhalation.
Concussion watch.
Standard protocol.
Keifer refused to leave.
Sat in the chair beside her bed.
Holding her hand.
Watching her sleep.
Mamma brought food.
Made him eat.
Made him rest.
But didn't make him leave.
"He won't," Mamma told Jay when she woke.
"He sat right there the whole time.
Wouldn't move.
Wouldn't sleep.
Wouldn't eat until I threatened him."
Jay looked at him.
Asleep in the chair.
Hand still holding hers.
Face exhausted but peaceful.
"He saved my life," she whispered.
"Ran up 45 floors.
Through smoke.
Through fire.
For me."
Mamma squeezed her hand.
"That's love, darling.
That's real love."
---
Morning
Jay woke to Keifer's face.
Close.
Watching her.
Those storm-gray eyes soft.
"Hey," he whispered.
"Hey yourself."
"How do you feel?"
She assessed.
Headache.
Sore throat.
Tired.
But alive.
Definitely alive.
"Better.
Thanks to you."
He kissed her forehead.
"Always."
She smiled.
"Weak.
But always."
He laughed.
Quiet.
Relieved.
"I love you, Jasper Jean Mariano.
I love you so much it scares me."
She cupped his face.
Pulled him closer.
"I love you too, Mark Keifer Watson.
More than I ever thought possible."
He kissed her.
Soft.
Sweet.
Full of promise.
"Never doing that again.
The almost losing you part."
She smiled against his lips.
"Good.
Because I'm not almost dying again.
It's exhausting."
He laughed.
Held her.
Grateful.
Loving.
Home.
---
Later
The room filled with family.
Keiran climbed onto the bed.
Careful.
Gentle.
Hugged Jay carefully.
"Kuya Jay.
You scared me again.
Stop being scary."
Jay hugged him back.
"I'll try, little monster.
I'll really try."
Keigan stood by the bed.
Serious.
Assessing.
"You're okay?
Really okay?"
Jay nodded.
"Really okay, Koya.
Thanks to Kuya Kai."
Keigan looked at his brother.
Nodded once.
"Good.
You're a good Kuya."
Keifer's eyes softened.
"Thanks, Keigan."
Percy and Aries hovered.
Worried.
Relieved.
Loving.
Percy grabbed her hand.
"Don't ever do that again.
My heart can't take it."
Aries kissed her forehead.
"Stop trying to leave us.
We're not done with you yet."
Jay laughed.
Weak but happy.
"I'm not going anywhere.
Promise."
Pappa stood in the doorway.
Quiet.
Strong.
Watching his family.
Mamma was everywhere.
Checking on everyone.
Making lists.
Calling doctors.
Being Mamma.
And Keifer.
Keifer never let go of her hand.
Not once.
Not for a second.
---
Evening
Visiting hours ended.
Family left.
Promising to return tomorrow.
Keifer stayed.
Of course.
Refused to leave.
The nurses gave up arguing.
Jay was half-asleep.
Curled toward him.
Their hands intertwined.
"Keifer?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you.
For coming for me.
For not giving up.
For loving me."
He kissed her knuckles.
"I'll always come for you, Jay.
Always.
No matter what."
She smiled.
Eyes closing.
"Good.
Because I'll always come for you too.
Even if you don't need saving."
He laughed.
Quiet.
Tender.
"I always need saving, Jay.
From myself.
From my walls.
From my fear.
You save me every day."
She opened her eyes.
Looked at him.
Those storm-gray eyes so open.
So vulnerable.
So hers.
"Then we'll save each other.
Forever."
He kissed her.
Soft.
Sweet.
Eternal.
"Forever."
---
The Next Morning
Jay was discharged.
Concussion mild.
Smoke inhalation cleared.
Good to go home.
Home.
The mansion.
Her family.
Keifer.
They walked out together.
Hand in hand.
The Watson family waiting in the parking lot.
Cheering when they appeared.
Keiran ran to her.
Attached to her legs.
"KUYA JAY!
You're coming home!
For real!
Forever!"
Jay picked him up.
Carefully.
Smiled at his happy face.
"For real, Keiran.
Forever."
Keigan nodded approvingly.
"Good.
The house is boring without you."
Percy grinned.
"Weak.
But we'll take it."
Aries hugged her gently.
"Welcome home, little sister."
Mamma kissed both her cheeks.
Pappa patted her shoulder.
And Keifer.
Keifer just stood there.
Watching her.
Those storm-gray eyes full of love.
She walked to him.
Took his hand.
Smiled.
"Take me home?"
He kissed her forehead.
"Always."
---
That Night
The mansion was quiet.
Everyone asleep.
Finally.
Jay and Keifer lay in his bed.
City lights outside.
Keiran's dinosaur on the nightstand.
Jay's guitar in the corner.
Their hearts beating together.
"Today was terrifying," Jay whispered.
"But we made it.
Together."
She nodded.
Pressed closer.
"I keep thinking...
What if you hadn't come?
What if—
He stopped her with a kiss.
"But I did.
I came.
I'll always come.
That's the only thing that matters."
She nodded.
Tears in her eyes.
"Okay.
Okay."
He held her tighter.
"Sleep now.
I'll be here.
Always."
She closed her eyes.
Safe.
Loved.
Home.
In his arms.
Where she belonged.
