Chapter 74 - Chapter 74 :The second target

Chapter 74: The Second Target

The body told them nothing.

No insignia.

No traceable weapon.

No identity.

Clean.

Deliberate.

Professional.

"…This wasn't a rogue faction," Tovin said, crouched beside the examination table.

"…Too precise."

Nyra crossed her arms.

"…Then someone with resources."

A pause.

"…And authority."

Silence followed.

Because that narrowed it down.

Dangerously.

"…Or multiple factions working together," Bram added.

"…Which is worse."

Kael stood near the edge of the room.

Quiet.

Still.

Listening.

Not just to them.

To everything.

"…He wasn't afraid," Kael said.

The others looked at him.

"…The assassin," he continued.

A pause.

"…He didn't hesitate."

Nyra's eyes narrowed.

"…Fanatic?"

Kael shook his head.

"…No."

A pause.

"…Certain."

That was worse.

"…So whoever sent him believes they're right," Lira said quietly.

Kael nodded once.

"…Enough to die for it."

Silence settled again.

Because that meant.

This wouldn't stop.

"…Then we don't wait for the next attempt," Bram said.

"…We find them first."

Tovin stood slowly.

"…Agreed."

He glanced at Kael.

"…Can you track anything?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Because what he felt now.

Wasn't simple.

"…Not directly," he said.

A pause.

"…But I can feel disturbances."

Nyra tilted her head slightly.

"…Define disturbances."

Kael's gaze shifted.

"…Intent."

That changed the room.

Because that meant.

No one was hidden anymore.

"…Then let's move," Bram said.

And this time.

Kael didn't hesitate.

Eryndor – Lower District

The streets were tighter here.

Darker.

Less controlled.

Perfect for disappearing.

Or hiding.

"…Feels right," Bram muttered.

"…Too quiet."

Tovin nodded.

"…Movement patterns are off."

Nyra's eyes scanned the rooftops.

"…We're being watched."

Kael stopped walking.

Not suddenly.

Naturally.

Like he'd reached something.

"…No," he said quietly.

A pause.

"…We're being guided."

That.

Was worse.

Before anyone could respond.

It happened.

Not from ahead.

Not from above.

From behind.

A flash of motion.

Too fast.

Too precise.

Straight for.

Lira.

She reacted instantly.

Turning.

Raising her guard.

But it wasn't enough.

The attacker didn't aim to kill.

They aimed to break.

A strike landed.

Perfectly placed.

Sending her crashing into the stone wall.

"…LIRA!" Bram roared.

The team moved.

Too late again.

Three figures dropped from the rooftops.

Masked.

Coordinated.

Silent.

Not assassins.

Hunters.

"…They're not here for Kael," Tovin realized.

A second strike.

This time aimed at Nyra.

Forced her back.

The formation broke instantly.

Exactly as planned.

Kael stepped forward.

And stopped.

Because now.

He understood.

"…They're isolating us," he said.

A pause.

"…They're testing me."

One of the masked figures tilted their head slightly.

Then moved again.

This time.

Directly at Lira.

She pushed herself up.

Still recovering.

Still off-balance.

And this time.

She wasn't ready.

The strike came fast.

Clean.

Unavoidable.

Kael moved.

Not fast.

Not violently.

But absolutely.

The space between them.

Shifted.

Collapsed.

The attacker's blade.

Stopped.

Mid-air.

Not blocked.

Denied.

Kael stepped between them.

Eyes calm.

Cold.

"…You chose the wrong target," he said.

The attacker didn't respond.

Didn't hesitate.

They adapted.

All three shifted positions instantly.

Changing angles.

Attacking together.

Not at Kael.

At everyone else.

Forcing him.

To choose.

Protect one.

Or all.

For a moment.

Time stretched.

Because this.

Was the real test.

Not power.

Control.

Kael exhaled.

And let go.

Not of himself.

Of limitation.

The space expanded.

Not outward.

Around them.

All of them.

The attacks landed.

But didn't connect.

Every strike.

Redirected.

Every motion.

Slowed.

Every intention.

Interrupted.

The attackers froze.

Not physically restrained.

But unable to complete their actions.

The world around them.

Had changed.

"…Impossible…" one of them whispered.

Kael stepped forward.

Presence steady.

Dominant.

"…No," he said quietly.

A pause.

"…Just beyond you."

The three figures didn't resist.

Didn't struggle.

Because they couldn't.

After a moment.

One of them spoke.

"…You're right," they said calmly.

A pause.

"…You're the threat."

Before Kael could react.

All three convulsed.

Then collapsed.

Dead.

Again.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Because now.

It was clear.

This wasn't just assassination.

This was escalation.

"…They didn't even try to escape," Nyra said quietly.

Tovin's voice was tight.

"…Because they weren't meant to."

Bram looked at Kael.

"…They're studying you."

Kael didn't deny it.

"…And adapting."

That word.

Carried weight.

Because they had seen that before.

With Dravok.

And now.

Something in the human world.

Was doing the same.

Lira stood slowly.

Still shaken.

But steady.

Her eyes met Kael's.

"…They didn't target me by accident," she said.

A pause.

"…They think I'm your weakness."

Kael held her gaze.

"…They're wrong."

But even as he said it.

He knew.

They weren't entirely wrong.

And that.

Made this far more dangerous.

Far away.

A figure stood in shadow once more.

Watching.

Learning.

"…He expands his control under pressure," the voice murmured.

A pause.

"…Accelerate the process."

Because the next move.

Wouldn't be a test.

It would be a breaking point.
