Chapter 73: The First Move
The war didn't begin outside the walls.
It began inside them.
The chamber had barely settled.
Tension still thick.
When it happened.
No warning.
No signal.
Just intent.
A shift.
Subtle.
But deadly.
Kael felt it before he saw it.
A distortion in the air.
Not pressure.
Something sharper.
Focused.
Directed.
His eyes moved.
Just slightly.
Too late for anyone else.
Perfect timing for the assassin.
A figure broke from the crowd.
Fast.
Silent.
A blade already mid-strike.
Aimed directly for Kael's throat.
Gasps erupted.
Too slow.
Weapons weren't drawn in time.
No one moved fast enough.
Except Kael.
He didn't step back.
He didn't dodge.
He shifted.
Barely.
The blade passed.
A fraction from his skin.
As if space itself bent around him.
The assassin's eyes widened.
Just for a second.
Enough.
Kael raised his hand.
Not striking.
Not attacking.
Touching.
The moment his fingers met the assassin's wrist.
Everything stopped.
Not physically.
Conceptually.
The assassin froze.
Mid-motion.
Blade still extended.
But no longer moving.
The entire chamber fell silent.
Because what they saw.
Shouldn't have been possible.
"…You chose the wrong moment," Kael said quietly.
The assassin struggled.
But couldn't move.
Not because he was restrained.
Because he had no momentum left to act on.
Kael stepped closer.
Eyes steady.
"…Who sent you?"
Silence.
Then.
The assassin smiled.
Faint.
"…We don't serve fear," he whispered.
A pause.
"…We erase it."
Before anyone could react.
His body convulsed.
Then collapsed.
Dead.
No wound.
No visible cause.
Gone.
"…Poison," Tovin said immediately.
A pause.
"…Self-triggered."
The room erupted.
Voices rising.
Accusations flying.
Weapons finally drawn.
"…Who did this?!"
"…This is treason!"
"…He's already influencing them!"
The chaos spiraled.
Out of control.
And in the center of it.
Kael stood.
Still.
Unmoved.
Watching.
Learning.
Then—
He stepped forward.
Once.
The air shifted again.
Heavier.
Not crushing.
But undeniable.
"…Enough."
The word wasn't loud.
But it carried.
Through the room.
Through the noise.
Through them.
And slowly.
The chaos stopped.
Not completely.
But enough.
Every eye turned back to him.
Because now.
They felt it clearly.
He wasn't just reacting anymore.
He was influencing the space itself.
"…You want answers," Kael said.
Calm.
Measured.
"…So do I."
He looked down at the body.
Then back up.
"…But this wasn't about information."
A pause.
"…This was a message."
Silence.
Because they all understood that.
"…Then say it," Rhyen said sharply.
"…What message?"
Kael's gaze hardened.
"…That I'm not untouchable."
A pause.
"…And that some of you would rather kill me than risk what I might become."
No one spoke.
Because again.
That was true.
The woman in dark robes stepped forward again.
"…Can you blame them?" she asked.
A pause.
"…You're something we don't understand."
Kael met her gaze.
"…Then start trying."
Silence.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
Because that required trust.
And no one here.
Trusted anyone.
Kael turned slightly.
Addressing the entire room now.
"…This is how it starts," he said.
A pause.
"…Not with the Devourer Lords."
His voice lowered.
"…With us."
That landed harder than anything else.
"…Fear. Control. Division."
A pause.
"…If we keep going like this…"
His gaze sharpened.
"…We lose before they even arrive."
Silence.
Because deep down.
They all knew it.
Rhyen stepped forward slowly.
"…Then what do you suggest?" he asked.
Not challenging.
Testing.
Kael didn't hesitate.
"…Stop treating me like a problem."
A pause.
"…And start treating me like a weapon you don't control."
That was dangerous.
Honest.
And exactly what they needed to hear.
"…You're asking for trust," the robed woman said.
Kael shook his head slightly.
"…No."
A pause.
"…I'm telling you to survive long enough to decide if I deserve it."
Silence.
Then.
Slowly.
The tension shifted.
Not gone.
But redirected.
Because now.
There was a bigger threat.
And it wasn't inside the room.
"…Find out who sent him," Rhyen ordered.
"…Now."
Guards moved immediately.
The body was taken.
The room began to reorganise.
Not calmer.
But focused.
Kael stepped back.
Returning to the team.
Lira looked at him.
Eyes sharp.
"…You didn't even try to fight," she said.
Kael exhaled slowly.
"…I didn't need to."
A pause.
"…That's the problem."
Because now.
Everyone had seen it.
And once something like that was seen.
It couldn't be unseen.
Far away.
A shadowed figure stood in silence.
Watching through something unseen.
"…He didn't retaliate," a voice murmured.
A pause.
"…Interesting."
The figure turned.
Disappearing into darkness.
"…Prepare the next attempt."
Because the first move.
Had only just been made.
