Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Hunter and The Hunted

Leona and Ren made their plans and prepared to leave Targ en route to their new destination, the planet Vanda. Their goal was to gather intel on Toro on the planet that his son ruled. However, as they tried to leave they encountered a problem.

They noticed that Leona's face was plastered all over wanted posters near the port. They quickly hid themselves to avoid being caught by the patrols.

"I guess we shouldn't be too surprised. In fact, the only real surprise is that they hadn't done any of this earlier." Ren said quietly to Leona.

"What does the poster say how much is my bounty worth?" She asked. She had ducked behind the wall and couldn't see.

"It doesn't say anything. It's just your face with wanted plastered over it. This isn't the Wild West, they don't want you dead or alive. And it doesn't look like I have a wanted poster at all." Ren replied.

"What? How come I have one and you don't?" She asked, annoyed.

"I don't know, I'm just telling you what I see." He replied. Though he was pretty sure that he knew the reason why his picture wasn't shown.

"What do we do? We need to go through there to get to our ship in order to leave."

"Well first things first we need to come up with some sort of disguise. I'm pretty sure that's the only way we can make it through the checkpoint." Ren suggested.

"Do you really think that will work?" Leona asked skeptically.

"Yeah, definitely. You just gotta trust me." He replied.

A short while later, the two were running as fast as they could with dozens of law enforcement officers in hot pursuit of them.

"Ah! I should have known better than to listen to you!" Leona said as Ren drug her behind him as he ran.

Ren's brilliant plan was to put his trench coat around Leona and make her wear large sunglasses to hide her face. Of course, the trouble began when they asked to see their IDs. As soon as he was challenged, Ren immediately grabbed Leona by the arm and ran out as fast as he could.

"How did you even expect that to work?" She added, still complaining.

"Pretty much the same way that it did. Things are going more or less as I expected." Ren said nonchalantly.

"Huh? Are you seriously telling me that you rushed in there knowing that we couldn't get past them? That's insane!" Leona exclaimed.

"Just trust me I've got this." Ren said dismissively.

"Why should I trust you? The last time I did that you got a bunch of officers chasing us!" Leona shouted.

"Yeah exactly. They're all chasing us. If they're chasing us that means that they aren't guarding the port. You see where I'm going with this right?" Ren said.

"So you made this little scene to get the guards out of the port so you can make your escape. A clever little move, but not good enough to get away from me." A voice acknowledged, but it didn't come from Leona.

Ren turned and saw the man that the voice came from. He was a large man with dark tied up hair and a rough black beard, wearing a Vercheg military uniform. He jumped down and blocked off Ren's path.

"I'm going to need you to give me the girl now boy." He demanded.

"Well I guess I could, but first things first, who are you?" Ren asked.

"Hey you don't get to decide if I get taken by this creep or not!" Leona complained loudly, though it was mostly ignored by Ren.

"You wanna know who I am? Sure I'll tell ya. My name is Deergen Bark, I'm a Sergeant in the Vercheg military." The man said as he introduced himself.

"The Vercheg military? You're a little bit outside of your jurisdiction here aren't you?" Ren asked.

"Not when we're talking about a woman who's trying to assassinate our nation's greatest hero." Deergen replied. "Plus, this nation is a member of the Coalition. We have the authority to conduct missions within the borders of any Coalition nation."

"So that four eyes guy sent somebody after us huh?" Ren said.

"Yeah he did, and he must want the girl pretty bad or else he wouldn't have sent me." Deergen said confidently. "Though he did leave out a few details it seems."

"Oh? And what would that be?" Ren asked. He was trying to keep Deergen talking while he thought of a way out of the situation.

"He didn't mention that the girl would be so pretty, and he didn't mention anything about you at all." Deergen said.

"Pretty? I don't recall seeing any pretty ladies around here. Maybe you have the wrong person." Ren suggested.

"Hey!" Leona protested.

"Yeah, my orders are to bring her back alive, but with a pretty face like that I don't think I'll be able to hold myself back. I doubt they'll be enough of her left to take into custody by the time I'm done with her." Deergen said with a twisted grin.

"Well, that all sounds very nice, but I think we're going to have to decline." Ren said as he prepared to run away.

"Put me down! I can take this guy!" Leona said as she struggled to free herself from Ren's grip.

"Hey! I can't run properly while I'm carrying you!"

"We don't need to run, I can take this guy!" She said as her struggling caused the two to fall over.

"Now, I didn't account for you." Deergen said, ignoring their squabbling and directing his attention towards Ren. "But luckily, this gives me a good excuse to use my new pet." He said as he snapped his fingers and a massive metal container fell from the sky.

"I think the three of us are in for a bit of fun. So let the hunt begin." He said as he snapped his fingers again and the door of the container fell down. What came out of the container was a horrible creature that struck fear into anyone unfortunate enough to cross its path.
