Chapter 12
For a moment, Kael could not move.
The golden circle burned across the black stone floor like living fire, its light crawling outward in glowing veins that stretched across the chamber walls and pillars. Symbols older than any known language pulsed beneath Ariana's feet, each line radiating power.
And at the center of it—
Ariana.
The light climbed up her body in thin glowing lines that wrapped around her wrists, her shoulders, her throat.
Chains.
Not made of metal.
Made of pure golden energy.
They floated around her like living things, tightening each time the power inside the circle surged.
Ariana trembled where she stood.
Her glowing eyes widened as she saw Kael standing across the chamber.
"Kael…"
The way she said his name was barely a whisper.
But it cut through him like a blade.
Kael's wolf slammed violently against his ribs.
Break them.
Break everything.
His gaze snapped toward the man standing beside her.
Tall.
Composed.
Dressed in black and gold like a figure carved from the ancient power filling the chamber.
The stranger's posture was relaxed, almost elegant, as if the chaos unfolding around him were nothing more than an expected event.
He studied Kael with quiet curiosity.
Like a scholar examining a weapon he had never seen before.
"Ah," the man said softly.
"The Alpha."
Kael's voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.
"Let her go."
The stranger did not move.
Instead, he tilted his head slightly.
"You crossed the barrier," he said calmly.
"Impressive."
Kael took one step forward.
The golden chains instantly tightened.
Ariana gasped as the light burned brighter against her skin.
Kael froze.
Rage surged through him.
"What did you do to her?"
The man's faint smile returned.
"Protected her."
Ariana shook her head weakly.
"That's not"
The chains tightened again.
A sharp breath escaped her lips as pain cut through her words.
Kael's claws nearly broke through his skin.
"Touch her again," he growled, his voice vibrating with restrained violence, "and I will tear this entire city apart stone by stone."
The man's eyes flickered with interest.
"You would destroy an ancient sanctuary for one woman?"
Kael didn't hesitate.
"Yes."
For the briefest moment, something like respect crossed the stranger's face.
"Remarkable."
Ariana forced herself to stand straighter despite the chains.
"Stop talking like I'm not here," she said through clenched teeth.
Her golden eyes flared brighter.
The chains reacted instantly.
They tightened around her wrists with a sharp pulse of light.
Pain flashed across her face.
That was enough.
Kael's control snapped.
He lunged forward.
The moment his foot crossed the edge of the circle,
the chamber exploded with power.
Golden light slammed into him like a solid wall.
Kael was thrown backward across the floor.
He crashed into one of the massive stone pillars with bone-rattling force.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Ariana screamed.
"Stop!"
The stranger sighed softly.
"I warned you."
Kael pushed himself upright slowly.
Blood ran from the corner of his mouth now.
But the fire in his golden eyes only burned brighter.
"You're going to regret that."
The man stepped calmly to the edge of the circle.
"You misunderstand the situation."
Kael wiped the blood from his lip.
"Do I?"
"Yes."
He gestured toward Ariana.
"She is not your prisoner."
Kael's eyes flicked toward the chains wrapped around her throat.
"Looks like one."
"She is awakening."
Ariana's breathing quickened.
"I don't want this," she said weakly.
The stranger's gaze softened slightly.
"It is not about what you want."
Kael's voice cut through the chamber like steel.
"Funny."
He took a slow step closer.
"Neither is what happens next."
Silence fell over the chamber.
The golden light around Ariana pulsed again.
Stronger this time.
The symbol carved into the floor beneath her flared.
Five lines spread outward from the center.
Four curved.
One rose through the middle like a pillar of light.
The stranger looked down at the symbol with quiet satisfaction.
"Perfect timing."
Kael's wolf snarled.
"What are you doing?"
The man turned toward him.
"Completing what the council tried to erase."
Ariana shook her head desperately.
"No."
"Yes."
The stranger slowly raised one hand.
The golden chains lifted Ariana slightly off the ground.
Her body trembled as power surged through her veins.
Kael felt the bond explode with pain.
"Ariana!"
Her glowing eyes snapped toward him.
"Don't"
The stranger's voice echoed through the chamber.
"The Sovereign must awaken fully."
Kael's chest tightened.
"Sovereign?"
The man smiled faintly.
"The ruler of all bloodlines."
Ariana's breath trembled.
"I don't want to rule anyone."
"That has never mattered."
The golden light intensified.
Behind Ariana, wings formed again.
Massive.
Made of burning gold.
They spread across the chamber like sunlight turned solid.
Kael could feel the power vibrating through the stone beneath his feet.
If this continued,
something irreversible would happen.
"Stop this," Kael said quietly.
The stranger ignored him.
Instead, he spoke to Ariana.
"Do you feel it?"
The golden crown flickered above her head.
"Yes," she whispered.
"What do you feel?"
Ariana's voice shook.
"Everything."
Images flooded her mind.
Battles.
Empires rising.
Kings kneeling.
Bloodlines bowing.
And above them all,
a throne of gold.
Her chest tightened.
"I can't control it."
"You're not meant to control it."
The stranger's eyes gleamed.
"You're meant to command it."
Kael stepped forward again.
This time slowly.
Carefully.
"Ariana," he said.
Her glowing eyes found his.
The moment their gazes locked,
the bond surged.
The golden chains flickered.
Just slightly.
The stranger noticed instantly.
His expression sharpened.
"Interesting."
Kael took another step.
"Ariana."
Her breathing slowed.
The chains flickered again.
"You're stronger than this," Kael said quietly.
The stranger's calm cracked.
"She must not break focus."
Ariana's voice trembled.
"I can hear them."
"Who?"
"All of them."
The golden light surged violently.
"Every bloodline."
Kael's chest tightened.
"That's enough."
He stepped into the circle again,
and grabbed Ariana's hand.
The chamber erupted with power.
Golden light exploded outward.
But something changed.
The chains did not tighten.
They shattered.
One by one, the glowing bonds snapped like glass made of sunlight.
The stranger's eyes widened.
"That should not be possible."
Kael pulled Ariana into his arms.
"You're done with her."
For the first time since Kael arrived,
the man looked unsettled.
"You've disrupted the awakening."
"Good."
"You have no idea what you've done."
Ariana looked up weakly at Kael.
"What did we do?"
The stranger's voice dropped.
"You started it."
The symbol on the floor erupted with blinding light.
The entire mountain trembled.
Stone cracked.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Outside the chamber,
horns began to sound again.
But this time,
they weren't coming from inside the city.
They echoed from beyond the mountains.
The stranger's face went pale.
"No…"
Kael frowned.
"What now?"
The man slowly turned toward the open doors of the chamber.
His voice came out barely above a whisper.
"You weren't the only one who felt the Sovereign awaken."
Kael's stomach dropped.
"Who else?"
Before the man could answer,
a roar shook the mountains.
Deep.
Ancient.
Terrifying.
Not wolf.
Not vampire.
Something older.
Something enormous.
The stranger closed his eyes.
"They're here."
Kael tightened his grip around Ariana protectively.
"Who?"
The man opened his eyes again.
And for the first time since Kael arrived,
he looked afraid.
"The ones who killed the first Sovereign."
