Chapter 11 - The Alpha Who Came Too Soon

Chapter 11

Kael had not stopped running for hours.

The mountains rose around him like jagged teeth cutting into the sky, their dark peaks buried beneath drifting clouds. Ice-laced wind tore across the slopes, biting through fur and flesh alike, but Kael barely felt it.

Pain meant nothing now.

Cold meant nothing.

The only thing that mattered was the thread pulling tight inside his chest.

Ariana.

His wolf was fully awake beneath his skin, fast, furious, relentless. Every stride across the frozen ground shook with restrained violence.

The bond had changed after she disappeared.

Before, it had been subtle. A quiet awareness under his skin. A strange pull he couldn't explain.

Now it was something else entirely.

A living thread.

Tight.

Sharp.

Alive.

It tugged at him constantly, vibrating with distance and danger.

She was alive.

He knew that with absolute certainty.

He could feel it.

But she was far away.

Hidden.

And every second that passed made the rage inside him burn hotter.

Behind him, heavy footsteps pounded against stone and snow.

Ryder caught up first.

The beta shifted mid-run, bones cracking sharply as he landed on the narrow stone ledge beside Kael in human form. He dragged in a breath, running a hand through his dark hair.

"You've led the pack halfway into dead territory," Ryder muttered. "Want to tell me where we're going?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

For one more moment he remained in wolf form, staring at the towering cliffs ahead.

Then he shifted.

Bones cracked. Muscle twisted.

Within seconds, he stood there in human form, chest rising and falling, golden eyes fixed on the mountain wall in front of them.

"She's here."

Ryder followed his gaze.

There was nothing there.

Only solid stone.

Snow caught in the cracks. Thin morning mist curling through the jagged rocks.

Ryder frowned.

"Kael."

"I can feel her."

That part was not up for debate.

The bond had dragged him here with ruthless certainty. It hummed beneath his skin now, pulsing stronger the closer he got.

Ryder folded his arms slowly.

"And you think whoever took her is hiding in a mountain?"

Kael's jaw tightened.

"No."

He stepped forward.

The stone beneath his boots crunched with frost as he reached the cliff wall and placed one hand against the cold surface.

"They're hiding behind it."

For a moment, nothing happened.

The wind howled across the ledge. Snow swirled through the air.

Then,

the atmosphere shifted.

The rock beneath Kael's palm rippled.

Not visibly. Not enough for human eyes.

But enough.

Enough for his wolf to feel it.

Enough for instinct to recognize what logic could not.

Magic.

Ancient.

Layered so thick it almost felt alive.

Ryder swore quietly under his breath.

"That's not council work."

"No."

Kael's voice dropped low.

"It's older."

He pressed harder against the stone.

A sharp pulse of gold flashed beneath the surface like lightning trapped under glass before disappearing.

Ryder went completely still.

"Did you see that?"

Kael stepped back slowly.

"Yes."

The bond surged again.

Ariana was close now.

Close enough that his chest felt tight with it.

Close enough that he could almost smell her.

Then a long howl split through the wind behind them.

More wolves emerged from the tree line below.

Pack warriors climbed the rocky slope in pairs, weapons strapped to their backs, expressions grim and determined.

Kael recognized every one of them.

Men and women who had fought beside him.

Who had followed him into bloodshed before.

Who would do it again without hesitation.

Ryder glanced down at them, then back at Kael.

"You brought too many for a rescue."

Kael didn't look away from the stone wall.

"This stopped being a rescue when they took her."

One of the warriors climbed onto the ledge beside them.

Talia.

Dark-haired. Scar across her eyebrow. One of the most dangerous fighters in the pack.

"Scouts found movement below the southern ridge," she reported. "Not council. Unknown signatures."

Ryder exhaled sharply.

"Of course."

Kael turned toward them.

"No one moves until I say."

Talia frowned.

"If they've hidden her behind a warded barrier, we may not have long before they move her again."

Kael already knew that.

He could feel the bond shifting restlessly, as if Ariana herself were moving somewhere on the other side.

Not far.

But not free.

His wolf bared its teeth inside him.

Break it.

Kael stepped toward the stone again.

Then another step.

The wind cut harder across the cliff now, sharp with snow and mountain ice.

But something else slipped through it.

Something warmer.

A scent.

Gold.

Light.

Her.

His chest tightened so violently he forgot to breathe.

"She's right there," he said quietly.

Ryder studied him carefully.

"You sure this isn't the bond messing with your head?"

Kael's eyes flashed dangerously.

"She's there."

No one argued after that.

Silence settled over the ledge.

Then Kael planted both hands against the stone.

He drew in a breath.

And let his wolf rise.

Power rolled off him in violent waves.

The air thickened instantly.

Gold flashed through his eyes.

The mountain answered.

A deep vibration shuddered through the rock.

Talia stumbled back.

Ryder's expression darkened.

"Kael, whatever barrier that is, forcing it could"

Too late.

A crack exploded down the center of the stone with a sound like thunder.

Light burst through the gap.

Not white.

Gold.

The entire mountainside trembled.

Snow cascaded from the higher peaks in massive clouds. Wolves behind them shouted, struggling to keep their footing as the ledge shook beneath their boots.

Then,

the hidden wall broke.

Not completely.

Just enough.

A seam of blinding golden light tore through the illusion.

And beyond it,

something impossible.

White towers.

Bridges suspended between cliffs.

Terraces carved directly into the mountain itself.

A city.

Hidden inside the mountain.

Ryder stared.

"What the hell…"

The opening began sealing again, as if the mountain itself were trying to close the wound.

Kael lunged forward.

"Kael!" Ryder shouted.

Too late.

Kael was already through.

The moment he crossed the threshold, the world changed.

Warm air replaced the biting cold.

The scent of ancient stone and flowing water filled his lungs.

The ground beneath his boots was smooth white marble veined with gold.

The hidden city stretched before him like something from a forgotten age.

Terraces climbed along the mountain walls.

Archways carved with symbols Kael had never seen.

Bridges spanning enormous drops into mist-filled depths.

And everywhere,

movement.

Figures.

Dozens of them.

Not wolf.

Not vampire.

Not any bloodline Kael recognized.

Every head turned toward him instantly.

Alarm rippled through the city.

A horn sounded.

Then another.

Kael ignored them all.

Because the bond had exploded inside him.

She was here.

Close enough to hurt.

He stepped forward,

and six armed figures dropped silently from the rooftops around him.

Dark armor.

Gold markings.

Curved blades.

Eyes glowing faintly with strange power.

One stepped forward.

Tall. Silver markings across his throat.

"You should not have come here, Alpha."

Kael didn't look at him.

"Move."

"You crossed a forbidden boundary."

"You took what's mine."

The guards exchanged glances.

Then their leader spoke calmly.

"She does not belong to you."

Kael's wolf surged violently.

"She's my mate."

Silence.

Then the guard's face hardened.

"That bond means nothing here."

Kael smiled.

Cold.

Dangerous.

"Then this city is about to learn what it means to me."

Blades flashed.

Kael shifted instantly.

A massive black wolf exploded into the middle of them.

Chaos erupted.

Steel clashed. Guards shouted.

Kael tore through them like a storm.

Then,

a pulse.

Gold.

Sharp.

Violent.

The bond flared.

Ariana.

Frightened.

Cornered.

Kael froze.

His head snapped toward a towering circular chamber built into the cliffside above the city.

Golden light poured from inside it.

The same gold.

Her gold.

Kael's expression darkened.

He shifted again.

Then launched forward.

The city erupted behind him.

But he barely heard it.

The bond was screaming now.

He tore through defenders.

Smashed through barricades.

Leaped bridges.

And when he reached the upper terrace—

he saw the chamber.

Its bronze doors half open.

Golden light blazing through the gap.

And from inside,

Ariana screamed.

Kael stormed forward.

He burst through the doors,

and stopped.

Ariana stood in the center of a burning golden circle.

Her eyes glowing.

Her body shaking.

Beside her stood a man dressed in black and gold, one hand raised as if controlling the light itself.

The stranger turned slowly toward Kael.

And smiled.

"Ah," he said softly.

"The Alpha finally arrived."

Ariana looked at Kael.

And the gold around her throat flared into chains.
