The rain finally started getting weaker by the time morning came. A pale gray light slowly spread across the sky, pushing away the darkness of the night. The rocky shelter where Kael had rested was still damp, but at least the storm had passed. Water dripped slowly from the edge of the stone above him, falling one drop at a time onto the ground.
Kael opened his eyes slowly.
For a moment he just stared at the sky beyond the rock, watching the clouds move lazily. His body still felt sore from the battles yesterday, but the strange strength inside him had not disappeared. In fact it felt even more stable now, like his body had accepted the new power completely.
He stretched his arms a little and winced.
"Yeah… still hurts."
The words left his mouth quietly, but a faint smile appeared on his face anyway. Pain was annoying, sure, but it also meant one thing.
He was still alive.
Kael slowly stood up from the ground and brushed the dried mud off his clothes. His spear was leaning against the rock wall where he left it last night. The weapon still looked rough and broken, but after everything that happened it felt strangely familiar in his hands.
He stepped out from under the rocky shelter.
The battlefield from yesterday was now far behind him, hidden by trees and fog. In front of him stretched a quiet forest road, wet from the rain and covered with fallen leaves.
For a while Kael just stood there, thinking.
"So… what now?"
His voice sounded small in the empty forest.
It was a strange thing when you thought about it. Yesterday he had been fighting monsters just to survive. Now that the battle was over, he suddenly realized something.
He didn't really know where he was going.
Kael looked at the road again.
"Well… standing here won't help."
He started walking.
The forest was quiet in the morning. Water dripped from branches and the smell of wet soil filled the air. Occasionally he heard birds moving somewhere high in the trees, but other than that the world felt calm.
It was a strange contrast compared to the battlefield.
Kael walked slowly while keeping his senses alert. The Abyss Core inside him pulsed softly every now and then, like a quiet reminder that he wasn't the same person he used to be.
After a while he spoke again, mostly to himself.
"You know… it's funny."
He kicked a small stone on the road as he walked.
"Yesterday I thought I was going to die like five times. Now I'm just… walking somewhere."
He chuckled quietly.
Life was weird like that. One moment everything felt like the end of the world. The next moment you were just another traveler on a road.
Kael looked at his hands again.
People always talked about strength like it was the answer to everything. Power, skill, victory. But standing here now, walking alone through a quiet forest, he started realizing something else.
Strength didn't really give answers.
It just gave you the chance to keep asking questions.
"Guess that's life," he muttered.
"If you're weak you disappear. If you're strong… you just get to keep going."
The forest slowly began thinning as he continued walking. Trees became less dense and sunlight started reaching the ground more clearly.
Then Kael noticed something in the distance.
Stone walls.
At first he thought it might just be another rock formation, but as he walked closer the shape became clearer.
A city wall.
Tall gray stone stretched across the horizon, with towers rising at certain points along it. The structure looked old but strong, like it had been standing there for many years.
Kael stopped walking.
"…Well."
A small smile appeared on his face.
"So there are people in this world."
For some reason that simple thought felt strangely comforting. Fighting monsters alone in the wilderness was one thing, but knowing there were actual cities and people out there made the world feel less empty.
Of course it also meant new problems.
Cities had rules.
Cities had people who asked questions.
And Kael wasn't exactly sure how he was supposed to explain where he came from.
Still, staying in the wild forever didn't sound like a great plan either.
"Guess we'll figure it out," he said quietly.
He started walking toward the city again.
As he got closer, more details became visible. The walls were tall enough to stop most monsters from climbing easily. Guards stood on the towers with spears and crossbows, watching the roads carefully.
A wooden gate stood open at the front entrance.
Several travelers were already walking in and out of the city. Some looked like merchants with carts, others looked like adventurers carrying weapons.
Kael slowed down a little as he approached.
The closer he got, the more noise he could hear.
Voices.
Footsteps.
The faint sounds of a living city.
After spending so much time in silent forests and battlefields, the noise felt almost strange.
Kael scratched the back of his head.
"Alright… let's not look suspicious."
He tried to walk normally toward the gate like everyone else.
Two guards stood at the entrance wearing metal armor. Their eyes scanned each person entering the city carefully.
When Kael finally reached them, one of the guards raised a hand.
"Stop there."
Kael stopped.
The guard looked him up and down.
Mud on his clothes.
A rough spear.
A tired face.
"You coming from the forest?" the guard asked.
Kael nodded.
"Yeah. Been traveling for a bit."
The guard frowned slightly.
"Traveling alone?"
"Seems like it."
For a moment the guard looked like he was thinking about something. Then he shrugged.
"Alright. Just don't cause trouble inside the city."
Kael nodded again.
"No promises," he said jokingly.
The guard blinked once, then snorted.
"Yeah, you'll fit right in."
With that, he stepped aside.
Kael walked through the gate.
The moment he entered, the atmosphere changed completely.
Streets stretched in different directions filled with people moving around. Shops lined the sides of the road, and the smell of cooked food drifted through the air.
Merchants shouted about their goods while travelers argued about prices.
It was chaotic.
But also… alive.
Kael looked around slowly, taking in the scene.
"So this is a city…"
He had no plan yet. No destination.
But strangely he didn't feel worried.
After everything he had survived, one simple thought stayed in his mind.
Life keeps moving.
And the only real choice you have is whether you move with it or not.
Kael adjusted his grip on the spear and walked deeper into the city streets.
Somewhere in this place his next story was waiting.
And he was curious to see where it would lead.
