The moment Kael pushed open the heavy wooden door, a wave of noise rolled over him.
The guild hall was alive.
Voices overlapped in every corner of the room—laughter, arguments, mugs hitting tables, chairs scraping across the floor. It felt less like an official organization and more like a chaotic tavern filled with people who just happened to carry weapons.
Kael paused near the doorway, letting his eyes slowly adjust to the dim interior.
Warm lantern light hung from wooden beams above, casting soft golden shadows across the hall. The building itself was much larger inside than it looked from the outside. Long wooden tables stretched across the room, many of them filled with adventurers talking loudly while eating or drinking.
The smell of roasted meat, ale, sweat, and metal hung in the air.
"Yeah… definitely a tavern," Kael muttered under his breath.
At one table, a group of armored adventurers were loudly celebrating something. One of them slammed his mug down while the others burst into laughter.
At another table, a quiet man sat alone sharpening a sword with slow careful movements, ignoring everything around him.
Near the far wall, several large boards were covered with papers pinned across them.
Quest requests.
Even from this distance Kael could see different categories written at the top of each board.
Monster Hunts.
Gathering.
Escort Requests.
Miscellaneous Tasks.
Adventurers moved back and forth between the boards and the long counter at the back of the hall, grabbing papers and handing them in.
Kael followed their movements until his eyes settled on the counter itself.
Behind it stood a young woman handling paperwork with calm efficiency.
Compared to the noisy hall, she seemed strangely composed.
Her brown hair was tied neatly behind her head, and she wore the simple uniform of the guild. Several stacks of documents were arranged carefully around her, and she moved through them with practiced ease.
"Next."
Her voice wasn't loud, yet it carried clearly through the nearby area.
An adventurer stepped forward and placed a crumpled paper on the counter.
"Quest completed," he said.
The woman looked it over, nodded once, then handed him a small pouch of coins.
"Reward confirmed. Next."
Everything moved quickly and smoothly.
Watching her work, Kael realized something.
No matter how chaotic the guild looked on the surface, someone had to keep the whole thing organized.
And apparently that someone was her.
Kael walked closer and joined the short line in front of the counter.
While waiting, he studied the people around him.
Adventurers came in all kinds.
Some wore heavy armor that looked expensive and well maintained. Others had simple leather gear with scratches and patches everywhere.
One man walked past carrying a massive axe over his shoulder.
Another adventurer leaned against a pillar while casually flipping a dagger between his fingers.
Kael couldn't help but notice something else too.
Most of them looked older than him.
More experienced.
It made sense. Adventuring wasn't exactly a safe career path for beginners.
After a few minutes the line shortened.
Soon Kael found himself standing directly in front of the receptionist.
She looked up from her paperwork.
For a brief moment her eyes carefully examined him.
Mud-stained clothes.
A rough spear strapped across his back.
A tired but steady expression.
Then her professional smile appeared.
"Welcome to the Adventurer Guild," she said politely. "How can I help you?"
Kael scratched the back of his head slightly.
"I want to register."
The woman nodded as if those were the most common words she heard every day.
"First time?"
"Yeah."
She reached under the counter and pulled out a small form along with a pen.
"Please fill this out. Name, age, and any combat skills you possess."
She slid the paper toward him.
Kael stared at it for a second.
It felt strangely formal.
After everything he had been through—monsters, battlefields, surviving by pure instinct—sitting here filling out paperwork almost felt ridiculous.
Still, rules were rules.
He picked up the pen.
Name: Kael
Age: 19
Combat Skills…
He paused there.
His mind ran through the last few days.
Fighting monsters in the forest.
Surviving a battlefield.
The strange power of the Abyss Core beating slowly inside his body.
But none of that felt like something he should casually write on a public document.
So instead he kept it simple.
Spear combat. Basic survival skills.
He finished writing and slid the paper back across the counter.
The receptionist looked it over.
"Spear user?" she said.
"Something like that."
She nodded and reached beneath the counter again.
This time she placed a small metal plate on the table.
"This will be your guild tag."
Kael picked it up.
The plate was simple but sturdy, made of dull silver metal with the guild symbol engraved into it.
Two crossed swords over a shield.
Below the symbol was a single letter.
E
Kael tilted his head slightly.
"Let me guess."
He held up the tag.
"That means I'm at the bottom."
The receptionist smiled faintly.
"Everyone starts at E rank."
Kael shrugged.
"Fair enough."
She continued speaking in a calm professional tone.
"You may take quests from the E-rank request board. Completing quests will earn you rewards and increase your guild reputation. Once certain requirements are met, you will be eligible for a rank promotion."
Kael nodded slowly while listening.
Simple system.
Work.
Earn money.
Get stronger.
Move up.
He could understand that kind of structure easily.
Before he stepped away though, the receptionist added something else.
"Oh, and one more thing."
Kael looked up.
"Try not to die on your first quest."
For a moment he wasn't sure if she was joking.
Her expression remained perfectly calm.
Then he chuckled.
"I'll try."
She nodded.
"That would make paperwork much easier."
Kael slipped the metal tag into his pocket and turned toward the quest boards.
Behind him someone suddenly slammed a mug onto a wooden table.
"Oi! New guy!"
Kael glanced over his shoulder.
A large man with broad shoulders and messy blond hair was staring directly at him from across the hall.
Several other adventurers sat at the same table, watching with amused expressions.
"First day in the guild?" the blond man asked loudly.
Kael sighed quietly.
He had a feeling this kind of thing was inevitable.
"Yeah," he answered.
The man leaned back in his chair.
"Then listen carefully."
His grin widened.
"City monsters aren't the only dangerous things around here."
The adventurers at his table laughed.
Kael looked at them for a moment.
Then he shrugged.
"Good to know."
And he turned back toward the quest board like the conversation wasn't important.
Behind him the laughter stopped.
Apparently that reaction wasn't what they expected.
Kael studied the quest board carefully.
Most of the requests were simple tasks.
Gather medicinal herbs from nearby hills.
Hunt small monsters like horned rabbits or forest wolves.
Deliver supplies to villages outside the city.
None of them sounded particularly glorious.
But they were a start.
And right now, a start was all he needed.
As he scanned the board, something inside his chest pulsed quietly.
The Abyss Core.
It wasn't reacting strongly.
Just a faint reminder that the strange power still existed inside him.
Kael placed a hand on his chest for a moment.
"Relax," he muttered quietly.
No one around him seemed to notice.
After another minute of searching, he reached forward and pulled one of the quest papers from the board.
Quest: Subdue Forest Wolves
Location: Western Forest Edge
Reward: 8 Silver Coins
Difficulty: E Rank
Kael read it once more.
Simple enough.
He folded the paper and walked back toward the counter.
The receptionist accepted the quest form and recorded it in a ledger.
"Quest accepted," she said. "Please return within three days."
Kael nodded.
Then he turned toward the guild doors again.
Behind him the loud hall continued like nothing had changed.
But for Kael, something had.
Just a few days ago he had been fighting for his life on a battlefield he barely understood.
Now he was officially an adventurer.
A small step.
But still a step forward.
He pushed open the guild doors and stepped back outside into the afternoon light.
The city streets were still full of life.
Merchants shouting.
Carts rolling.
People rushing between buildings.
Kael took a slow breath.
"Well," he said quietly.
"Guess the real work starts now."
He adjusted the spear on his back and began walking toward the western gate.
Somewhere beyond the city walls, another road was waiting.
And this time…
He was walking it on his own terms.
