Chapter 6 - 6.Waiting for the Fifth

The afternoon sun hung low in the sky when Nicolas Drake returned to his apartment building.

The run with Arjun had ended nearly thirty minutes earlier. Arjun had continued talking the entire time they walked back toward the street, jumping from one topic to another like a radio that couldn't stay on a single channel.

Nicolas had listened. Occasionally he answered with a short sentence, sometimes just a word.

That was enough for Arjun.

At the entrance of the building, Arjun finally stretched his arms and said, "Alright, I'm heading out. I didn't expect to randomly run into you today."

Nicolas nodded.

Harold studied him one more time.

"You really seem fine after that lightning thing," he said. "Still weird though."

"I'm fine."

Harold laughed lightly.

"Yeah, yeah. You always say that."

He turned and began walking down the sidewalk. After a few steps he looked back and waved casually.

"See you at work when you decide to come back!"

Then he disappeared around the corner.

The street became quiet again.

Nicolas entered the building and climbed the stairs to his apartment.

When he unlocked the door and stepped inside, the silence returned fully.

His apartment was small and simple. A desk near the window, a bed against the wall, a bookshelf with a few programming manuals, and the kitchen counter barely a few steps away.

Nothing had changed.

Yet something about the place felt different.

Nicolas walked directly toward his desk.

The computer still sat there, black and lifeless.

The burnt smell had faded, but the damage remained obvious.

The lightning had destroyed the power supply and most likely the internal components. The monitor screen showed no sign of life.

Nicolas pressed the power button once.

Nothing happened.

He looked at the machine for a long moment.

Months of work had been inside that computer.

His game project.

Empire Victor.

The code, the mechanics, the design structure for the artificial intelligence system that would control the characters.

All of it had been stored there.

Now it was gone.

For most people, losing that much work would cause frustration. Anger. Maybe panic.

Nicolas simply observed the situation.

The project had required time.

But time itself had never meant much to him.

He leaned back in his chair and folded his arms.

His mind replayed the moment from two days ago.

The flash of light outside the window.

The sudden explosion of sound.

Then the strange sensation when the electricity had traveled through the wires of his computer.

After that, everything had gone dark.

When he woke up, the world had changed.

Nicolas lifted his hand slightly.

Nothing about his body looked unusual.

But the system had appeared.

And it had given him tasks.

He focused for a moment.

The familiar text appeared again.

[Quest Progress]

Completed Quests: 2 / 5

Tier: Null

Remaining Quests to Unlock Tier 1: 3

The message disappeared after a few seconds.

Nicolas stared at the empty air where the text had been.

Three quests remaining.

That seemed to be the first real condition the system had given him.

He stood up and walked slowly toward the kitchen counter. A glass of water waited there from earlier that morning.

He drank half of it and returned to the desk.

The computer still sat silently in front of him.

Rebuilding the project from the beginning would take months.

Possibly longer.

But something about the situation made Nicolas pause.

The system.

If the system continued to function the way it had during the last two days, then something important would happen after the fifth quest.

Tier One.

A new stage.

The thought was interesting.

He sat back down in the chair and looked at the dark computer screen again.

Rebuilding the game immediately would consume his time again. Hours of coding every day.

But if the system truly held some form of structure or purpose, then understanding it might be more important right now.

Nicolas tapped his finger lightly against the desk.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then he reached a decision.

For now, the project could wait.

The system had already shown that it followed rules.

Complete quests.

Unlock the next tier.

That meant answers would likely appear after the fifth completion.

Nicolas leaned back in the chair again.

Three quests.

If the system continued giving daily physical tasks, then reaching five would only take a few days.

Waiting was not difficult.

He had done far more of it before.

Outside the window, the afternoon light slowly shifted as clouds moved across the sky.

Nicolas closed his eyes briefly and considered the changes he had already noticed.

His breathing after running had improved.

The fatigue in his muscles disappeared faster than expected.

The numbers might have been small.

+0.01 Strength.

+0.01 Endurance.

Yet the effect had been real.

He opened his eyes again.

If that growth continued over time, the results would eventually become significant.

The system was simple right now.

But simple systems often evolved.

Especially if they followed a structured design.

Nicolas stood up and stretched his arms once more.

The soreness from the morning exercise had almost completely disappeared.

That alone was enough evidence that something had changed.

He walked toward the window and looked down at the quiet street below.

People moved along the sidewalk.

Cars passed occasionally.

The city continued its normal rhythm.

Nothing about the outside world had changed.

Yet something inside his life had clearly shifted.

Nicolas returned to the desk and picked up a notebook from the corner.

If the system followed rules, then the best approach was observation.

Testing.

Recording results.

Just like debugging software.

He opened the notebook and wrote a few short lines.

Day 1 — Physical Conditioning Quest Completed

Reward: Strength +0.01 / Endurance +0.01

Day 2 — Physical Conditioning Quest Completed

Reward: Strength +0.01 / Endurance +0.01

Below that he added another line.

Total Completed: 2 / 5

Nicolas closed the notebook.

The plan was simple.

Complete the remaining quests.

Observe the changes.

Then see what the system revealed after the fifth completion.

He turned off the lights in the main room and moved toward the bedroom.

Tomorrow would likely bring the next task.

And when it did, he would complete it the same way.

Calmly.

Methodically.

Step by step.

Until the system finally opened the next door.

Three quests remained.
