Nicholas sat in his apartment surrounded by silence. He stared at the desk in front of him. The computer that used to be was gone. It had been three days now. All that was left was an outline in the dust and four small dents where the computers feet had pressed into the desk. The burned motherboard and melted wiring were thrown away without any fuss. Months of work thousands of lines of code and ideas that only existed inside that machine were all gone.
Lightning had destroyed it all in one second. Nicholas leaned back. Rubbed his eyes. He felt an ache in his arms and legs but it was a good kind of ache. It meant his body had been working hard. Was feeling the effects.
Then a soft window appeared in front of him. It was transparent. Seemed to be floating in the air.

Nicholas looked at the window for a moment then looked away. Three days ago he would have been very upset. He would have called a doctor. Thrown something at the wall.. Now he just let out a sigh.
"I guess this is my life now " he said to himself.
He stood up rolled his neck and started exercising. The strange thing was how his body felt. It was not like it had been transformed or made superhuman. It just felt a little better. His joints felt more stable. The exercises that used to be hard for him now felt like a conversation instead of a fight.
He did 30 push-ups, strong. Then he did 30 sit-ups breathing evenly. The squats were a bit harder. He made it through. The plank was more about endurance than muscle power. He had to hold it for 60 seconds. His brain kept telling him to stop but his body kept going.
Finally he went for a run. The evening air was cool and still. Nicholas jogged through the streets his footsteps falling into a rhythm that felt natural. He ran 2 kilometers without any problems. When he stopped he was sweating,. He felt good.
The notification appeared.

*Reward Applied*
- Increase Strength by 0.01
- Increase Strength by 0.01

Nicholas wiped the sweat from his forehead. It was still weird, still impossible. It was real.
When he got home a new window was waiting for him. It was wider than the others. The text felt more deliberate.

*Reward:*
- Unlock the Skill Tree

Nicholas stared at the window. "A coding quest " he said to himself.
He read it again then looked up at the ceiling. "So you test my body first and now you're testing my mind?" he asked, even though he knew there would be no answer.
The quest made sense at least. Programming was the real skill he had. He had spent years building it methodically while the world moved on to other things.
There was a problem. He looked at the desk. He did not have a computer.
"Well " he said, "I guess I need to fix that."
Nicholas went to the electronics store. Bought a new laptop. He chose one that was strong and fast with a CPU and plenty of RAM. He took it home set it up and started working on the quest.
He decided to build a scheduling engine. It was a concept but it would be complicated to implement correctly. He started coding. The lines of code grew into functions and the functions grew into modules. Hours. The city outside his window went dark.
At some point the system interrupted him.

**Daily Physical Exercise**

Nicholas stared at the notification at the screen full of unfinished code. He groaned.
"Right " he. Closed the laptop.
He did the exercises again: push-ups, sit-ups, squats, plank and a run. When he finished he felt a bit better. His body was. He could feel it.
The day Nicholas worked on the scheduling engine again. He was determined to finish it. The system appeared again reminding him to do his exercises. He did them. Then he went back to work.
Finally after hours of coding the program was complete. It ran without any errors. Nicholas felt a sense of pride and accomplishment.
The windows appeared.

Another panel materialized. It was clean and structured, with text.

**[Status Window]**
Name: Nicholas Hale
Strength: 1.08
Endurance: 1.07
*Functions Available:*
- Profile
- System Log
- **Skill Tree (Unlocked)**
---
Nicholas looked at the line and his eyes stopped on the Skill Tree. He selected it.
The window opened up into something big much bigger than Nicholas expected. It was like a tree with branches going in every direction. There was Programming, Languages, Typing Speed, Pattern Recognition, Problem Solving and Learning Efficiency.. Further in there were still some locked parts that did not have names yet and nobody knew what was required to open them.
Every type of skill had levels. You could see how far along you were and what you needed to do to move
Nicholas sat still.
The system had been watching everything he did.
It saw every improvement he made. Every skill he had been working on for years even when he did not realize it. The system did not start teaching him things it just looked at what he was already doing quietly from the very beginning.
Nicholas breathed out slowly.
The room looked the same. His desk, laptop and empty coffee cup were all still there unchanged.
Something inside Nicholas felt different. He had a sense of how big the world was. The world felt much bigger than it did a week ago.
It felt a lot more scary.
One thought was more important, than the others.
*If the system can track the skills of Nicholas *
His fingers tapped the desk once.
*maybe the system can also make the skills of Nicholas better.*
The journey of Nicholas had just started.
