Chapter 59 - Chapter 57 — Predators in the Forest

The forest above Kumogakure was unnaturally quiet that night.

No wind.

No insects.

Only the faint crackle of a small fire beside a rocky outcrop where Raizen Tenrai and the Mizuta twins had set camp.

Akari turned a stick slowly over the flames, two small river fish roasting above the heat.

Daigo leaned back against a stone.

"This survival thing isn't that bad."

Akari gave him a flat look.

"It's day two."

"Give it time."

Raizen sat just beyond the firelight.

Watching the treeline.

The Sound of the Forest

Inside his mind, Astra spoke.

"Environmental anomaly detected."

Raizen didn't move.

Where?

"Thirty meters east."

"Movement minimal."

Raizen reached down, picked up a small stone, and tossed it casually into the bushes.

A bird burst upward.

Akari flinched.

"Hey!"

Raizen shook his head.

"Just checking."

But his gaze didn't shift.

Because the bird wasn't what Astra detected.

Something else remained.

Still.

Watching.

Silent Visitors

Minutes passed.

Then—

A branch snapped behind them.

Daigo sat upright.

"Yeah, I heard that."

Raizen stood.

A kunai already in his hand.

The firelight flickered.

Shadows shifted.

Then—

Three figures emerged.

Students.

Another team.

One stepped forward.

Tall.

Muscular.

A training spear resting across his shoulders.

He grinned.

"Well."

"Nice setup you've got here."

Akari sighed.

"Of course."

Territory

The spear user spun his weapon lazily.

"Would be a shame if someone took it."

Daigo stood.

"You're welcome to try."

Two more students stepped into view behind him.

Positioning.

Flanking angles.

Testing.

Raizen watched them carefully.

Not aggressive.

Not reckless.

Just probing.

This wasn't a fight.

It was territory control.

Raizen spoke calmly.

"You're three hours from the nearest consistent water source."

The spear user blinked.

"And?"

"If you take this camp," Raizen continued, "you'll have to abandon it tomorrow."

Silence.

The boy studied him.

"You mapped the terrain already?"

Raizen didn't answer.

The boy smiled slowly.

"…interesting."

The Standoff

For a moment, no one moved.

Firelight flickered between both teams.

Akari's hand hovered near her pouch.

Daigo adjusted his footing.

Across from them, the spear user shifted his grip.

Then—

A stone rolled down the slope behind the camp.

Every head turned instantly.

The Shadow Watching

At the top of the ridge—

A figure stood.

Still.

Silent.

Rei Kisaragi.

His presence blended into the darkness.

Watching both teams.

Evaluating.

His voice came quietly.

"Instructor patrol. Closing."

The spear user frowned.

"How do you—"

Rei didn't answer.

He stepped backward.

And vanished into the trees.

Gone.

Rapid Decisions

Raizen moved instantly.

"Fire out."

Akari smothered the flames.

Daigo grabbed the packs.

The rival team hesitated—

Then—

A whistle cut through the forest.

Sharp.

Close.

Instructor patrol.

The spear user cursed.

"Move!"

Both teams scattered.

No more tension.

Only survival.

Night Movement

Raizen's team moved fast.

But controlled.

Through trees.

Over uneven ground.

Down narrow paths.

After several minutes, they slowed.

Akari exhaled.

"That stealth guy just saved us."

Daigo nodded.

"Yeah… why though?"

Raizen glanced back into the darkness.

"He didn't."

They looked at him.

"He avoided getting caught himself."

Akari smirked.

"Fair."

System Evolution

Inside his mind, Astra processed rapidly.

"Multi-team interaction detected."

"Threat layering: increased."

"Environmental + human variables now overlapping."

Raizen's expression didn't change.

But internally—

The difficulty had shifted.

This wasn't just survival anymore.

It was competition.

Prediction.

Positioning against multiple opponents.

A Growing Generation

Far behind them, Instructor Takeshi Aran stepped into the abandoned camp.

He crouched near the extinguished fire.

Studied the ground.

Multiple tracks.

Split directions.

Clean exits.

No hesitation.

He stood slowly.

"They're adapting faster this year."

Another instructor beside him nodded.

"Especially a few of them."

Aran's gaze lifted toward the forest.

Sharp.

Focused.

Because somewhere out there—

Certain students were no longer prey.

They were learning to hunt.
