Morning broke over the mountain city of Kumogakure.
Low clouds drifted between the towering stone pillars supporting the village's suspended walkways.
From the academy dormitory balconies, students could see lightning flicker deep within distant storm banks.
The perfect weather for Kumogakure.
Inside the dorm common hall, however, the atmosphere was anything but calm.
Students crowded around the bulletin board near the entrance.
The Thunder Ranking Board had updated.
Names shifted across the list.
Some climbed.
Some fell.
And near the top of the rankings, a familiar cluster of names had begun drawing attention.
Raizen Tenrai.
Akari Mizuta.
Daigo Mizuta.
Ren Sōma.
Tetsuo Kurogane.
Kaede Arashino.
Students whispered among themselves.
"They're taking over the board…"
"Every week one of them wins a major fight…"
"It's like they're competing against each other."
Across the room, Daigo leaned against the wall with his arms crossed proudly.
"Good."
"That means we're winning."
Akari rolled her eyes.
"That's not how rankings work."
Raizen simply watched the board quietly.
But he noticed something else.
A new name had appeared near the top.
A name he hadn't seen before.
Kaito Raigane.
An elite class leader from one of the other academy divisions.
Training Field Lessons
Later that morning, Instructor Hoshin gathered several classes on a large outdoor training platform.
Storm clouds rolled overhead.
Wind swept across the stone field.
Perfect conditions for a lesson.
Hoshin stood in the center of the training ground.
"Today we're discussing combat environments."
Students formed a circle around him.
He gestured toward the sky.
"In the shinobi world, battles rarely occur under perfect conditions."
He pointed toward the clouds.
"Wind affects projectile weapons."
Then he pointed toward the wet stone floor.
"Moisture affects footing."
Finally he tapped the ground.
"And terrain determines positioning."
He turned toward the students.
"A skilled shinobi doesn't fight the opponent alone."
"They fight the environment."
Akari nodded thoughtfully.
Raizen recognized the idea immediately.
Battlefield awareness.
A skill he had been unconsciously practicing for months.
Daigo raised his hand lazily.
"So what if the environment helps your opponent?"
Hoshin looked at him.
"Then you change the environment."
Demonstration Spar
To demonstrate the concept, Hoshin called two volunteers forward.
One was a quick taijutsu student.
The other carried throwing knives.
The match began.
Immediately the knife user tried to maintain distance.
But the taijutsu fighter kicked loose gravel across the field.
The footing changed instantly.
The knife thrower slipped slightly.
A moment later, he was pinned to the ground.
The instructor nodded.
"Terrain control."
Students murmured with interest.
These lessons felt more practical now that the tournament had begun.
Every student could immediately see how theory applied to real fights.
The New Challenger
That afternoon the Challenger Arena filled once again.
Word had spread quickly through the academy.
A new match had been announced.
Raizen Tenrai.
Versus.
Kaito Raigane.
The stands filled quickly.
Akari leaned forward slightly.
"That's the new name on the board."
Daigo cracked his knuckles excitedly.
"Oh this should be good."
Across the arena floor, a tall student stepped forward.
Electric-blue hair caught the light.
Sharp eyes.
Lightning chakra crackled faintly around his fingertips.
Kaito Raigane.
Elite class leader.
Lightning specialist.
He studied Raizen calmly.
"So you're the one climbing the rankings."
Raizen nodded slightly.
"Yes."
Kaito rolled his shoulders.
"Good."
A faint spark jumped between his fingers.
"I wanted to see you myself."
The instructor stepped between them.
Students leaned forward.
Because fights between high-ranking students rarely disappointed.
The instructor raised his hand.
"Begin!"
Lightning flashed across the storm clouds above Kumogakure.
The air shifted.
And the next battle began.
