Morning arrived quietly over Kumogakure.
Low clouds drifted between the towering mountains surrounding the village, casting long shadows across the academy grounds.
From the dormitory windows, students could see the distant lightning towers perched along the cliff edges—massive metal structures designed to draw the constant storms safely away from the village.
The air always smelled faintly of rain.
Inside Dormitory Hall C, Daigo burst into Room 214 already half dressed.
"We're late!"
Ren didn't even look up from tying his sandals.
"We're not."
"You're thinking of breakfast."
Daigo froze.
"…We missed breakfast?"
Raizen closed the dorm window and picked up his practice blade.
"You woke up early yesterday."
Daigo groaned.
"This academy schedule is a trap."
Morning Training Grounds
By the time the class reached the training yard, several instructors were already waiting.
Something felt different today.
Students whispered among themselves.
"Do you hear that?"
"Yeah…"
A faint sound drifted through the air.
Soft metal chimes.
Raizen noticed it immediately.
Small bronze bells tied to cords at the belts of several instructors.
Akari nudged Daigo.
"Why do they have bells?"
Daigo grinned.
"Maybe it's a fashion thing."
Raizen doubted that.
Nothing instructors wore during training was accidental.
The Lesson Begins
Instructor Tetsuya gathered the class near the edge of the field.
Today's training ground overlooked one of the academy's lower forest slopes—dense trees stretching down the mountain like a green ocean.
The bells chimed quietly as the instructors moved.
Tetsuya noticed the students staring.
"Good," he said.
"At least some of you are paying attention."
He lifted one of the bells tied at his waist.
"This is a training tool."
The class leaned forward.
"It belongs to one of Kumogakure Academy's oldest traditions."
The bell rang once as he flicked it lightly.
"The Lightning Bell Challenge."
A ripple of excitement moved through the students.
Why the Bells Exist
Tetsuya began walking slowly across the field.
"Many years ago," he said, "a student managed to steal a bell from their instructor during a training exercise."
He paused.
"Instead of punishing the student… the academy studied what they did."
Several students blinked in surprise.
Tetsuya continued calmly.
"That student demonstrated something rare."
"Patience."
"Observation."
"Timing."
"The qualities that separate reckless fighters from real shinobi."
He looked back toward the class.
"So the academy turned that moment into a tradition."
The Challenge
He gestured toward the instructors scattered around the training field.
"Throughout the academy year, students may attempt to retrieve one of these bells."
Daigo whispered.
"Anytime?"
Tetsuya answered without looking at him.
"Within reason."
Several students laughed quietly.
"The rules are simple," Tetsuya continued.
"No lethal techniques."
"No disruption of academy operations."
"And the bell must be taken without causing serious harm."
Akari folded her arms.
"That sounds… impossible."
"That," Tetsuya said, "is the point."
The Hall of Storms
After training drills ended, Tetsuya led the class inside the academy's main hall.
A large stone wall stood near the far end of the chamber.
Students passed it every day without thinking about it.
Today they stopped.
Names were carved into the stone.
Only a few.
At the top, etched into the rock itself:
Lightning Bell Hall of Storms
Below it were several entries.
Year 58 — Daiken Rumo
Year 63 — Shina Akaru
Year 67 — Toru Sakamori
Year 73 — Jinpei Arata
Several years between them remained empty.
Daigo stared at the wall.
"That's… not many."
Tetsuya nodded.
"Most students never succeed."
The Storm Mark
He then opened a small wooden box and removed a metal insignia.
The piece was beautifully crafted.
A stylized cloud struck by a sharp bolt of lightning.
"This is called a Storm Mark."
Students leaned closer.
"When a student retrieves a bell, their name is added to the Hall of Storms."
He turned the insignia slightly so the metal caught the light.
"They also receive one of these."
Akari raised an eyebrow.
"A medal?"
"Something like that."
Tetsuya continued.
"The mark is worn on the uniform."
"And it remains part of your uniform for the rest of your career."
That caught everyone's attention.
Even Raizen's eyes sharpened slightly.
"Different years use slightly different designs," Tetsuya added.
"The harder the challenge becomes… the rarer the symbol."
He closed the box.
"The mark can be worn on any uniform."
"Standard classes."
"Elite classes."
"Even after you become a shinobi."
The message was clear.
This wasn't just a training exercise.
It was prestige.
Chaos
Naturally, the first attempts began immediately.
One student rushed toward Instructor Kuroda.
The bell rang as the instructor stepped aside effortlessly.
Another tried to grab one during sparring practice.
They were flipped onto their back before their hand got close.
Laughter echoed across the training field.
Daigo cracked his knuckles.
"Alright."
Akari grabbed his sleeve.
"No."
Too late.
Daigo sprinted toward Tetsuya in a sudden burst of speed.
For a moment it actually looked promising.
Then Tetsuya shifted slightly.
Daigo tripped over his own momentum and landed flat in the grass.
The bell chimed softly above him.
Students burst into laughter.
Daigo groaned.
"…I regret everything."
Observation
Raizen didn't move.
Instead he watched.
Kairo stood nearby doing the same.
"You're studying," Kairo said quietly.
Raizen nodded.
"The instructors aren't the challenge."
Kairo tilted their head.
"Oh?"
Raizen watched another student fail.
"The timing is."
Kairo smiled faintly.
"Now you're thinking like a hunter."
Evening on the Roof
Later that night several students gathered on the dormitory rooftop again.
Lantern light flickered across the academy grounds.
Instructors walked slow patrol routes through the training yards.
Bells chiming softly with each step.
Daigo leaned against the railing dramatically.
"I almost had it."
Akari laughed.
"You ran straight at him."
"That was phase one!"
Ren closed his book calmly.
"You didn't have a phase two."
Raizen watched the instructors below.
Listening to the faint sound of bells in the wind.
Inside his mind Astra spoke softly.
"Observation period recommended."
Raizen nodded slightly.
"Yeah."
Because the bell challenge wasn't meant to be solved in a day.
It was meant to be studied.
And eventually…
Someone would solve it.
