Chapter 7 - Trust earned - chapter 7

The morning sun filtered softly through the palace gardens, painting the hedges and fountains in hues of gold and rose. Ruby crouched behind a flowering bush, her heart still racing from the previous day's experiments. She had learned something crucial yesterday: subtlety was her greatest weapon. Small nudges, tiny interventions, and careful observation could shift outcomes in Angelica's favor without ever alerting the System.

But today, Ruby felt something else—the pull of the magical creatures she had brought with her. They were no longer just companions; they were allies, teachers, guides. Their trust in her had grown, and in turn, hers in them.

The silver-furred creature perched on her shoulder chirped softly, brushing a tiny paw against her cheek. Ruby smiled faintly.

"We'll do this together,"

she whispered. "Step by step."

A rustle in the garden alerted her to movement. From behind a hedge, the emerald and gold-furred creatures emerged, tails flicking, eyes glowing with warmth and curiosity. Ruby's pulse quickened. Today would be the first real test—not just of her shapeshifting or minor interventions, but of coordination. Could she guide events in the otome world without exposing herself or the animals?

She shifted her form slightly, elongating her body, flattening herself against the shadows. The creatures moved around her, blending perfectly into the foliage. Ruby observed Angelica as she strolled along a cobblestone path, accompanied by the same male leads Ruby had watched before. Their movements were precise, rehearsed, controlled by the System—but Ruby noticed a pattern now. Small cracks appeared in the sequences: hesitations, brief glances, tiny deviations from protocol.

Ruby's chest tightened. These are opportunities.

She focused, letting her mana ripple outward, connecting with the animals' auras. The silver creature leapt lightly to a nearby fountain, eyes alert.

Ruby felt its energy respond, a subtle hum that echoed her own intent. The emerald one perched on a tree branch, wings fluttering softly, while the gold-furred creature circled overhead. Together, they formed a network of observers, each one attuned to the slightest shifts in magic and emotion around Angelica.

Ruby took a deep breath and tested her first intervention of the day. A loose cobblestone near Angelica's path wobbled slightly, nudged by Ruby's mana. The heroine stepped aside instinctively, a faint smile crossing her face as though she had sensed something unseen guiding her.

It worked.

Small,

careful,

invisible.

The creatures chirped softly, their excitement palpable. Ruby allowed herself a tiny grin.

"See? We can do this,"

she whispered. "We just have to be patient."

She spent the next few hours coordinating subtle interventions. A flower fell just where Angelica's hand could brush it, creating a fleeting moment of joy. A misplaced ribbon redirected a noble's steps, preventing a minor confrontation. Even a spilled teacup was nudged slightly, giving Angelica a moment to shine in the eyes of the court.

All the while, the System remained unaware. Ruby's pulse quickened at the thought. The creatures and she were invisible threads weaving through the fabric of this controlled world, gently shifting outcomes without anyone noticing.

As the sun climbed higher, Ruby's confidence grew. She realized she could experiment with larger, riskier interventions—but carefully. One wrong move, one exposed manipulation, and the System might notice. She needed patience, strategy, and trust in her allies.

By midday, Ruby had drawn a small mental map of the garden, noting the positions and routines of Angelica, the male leads, and the attendants. She whispered instructions to the creatures, guiding their movements like a silent conductor. Each step, each observation, each subtle intervention strengthened the network, creating opportunities for the heroine while remaining unseen.

A sudden gust of wind carried the scent of roses and magic. Ruby's heart leapt. She felt a pull deeper than the garden itself—a tug of destiny, of fate. Angelica was at the center of this web, fragile but capable of thriving if only given the chance. Ruby's determination solidified.

The afternoon brought her first real test. A minor accident—a servant tripping over a rug—threatened to draw unwanted attention to Angelica. The System would have forced the heroine to react in a rigid, controlled way, potentially embarrassing her. Ruby acted. With a gentle flick of her mana, the rug shifted just enough to create a smooth path. Angelica stepped gracefully, unaware of the intervention.

Ruby's chest swelled. The creatures chirped and fluttered around her, celebrating silently. Trust had been earned, not just between Ruby and the animals, but in Ruby's ability to act in this new world.

As the day drew to a close, Ruby crouched beneath the largest rose bush in the garden, watching Angelica return to her chambers. The heroine's aura, once tightly constrained by the System, now shimmered with tiny sparks of freedom. Ruby's subtle interventions had given her moments of choice, moments where she could breathe and think without the System's control pressing down.

Ruby exhaled slowly, letting the tension leave her body. She knew this was just the beginning. Each day would bring new challenges, new opportunities, and new risks. But she also knew this: with patience, strategy, and her magical allies, she could slowly dismantle the System's control, one subtle act at a time.

The silver creature nuzzled her cheek again, and Ruby smiled faintly.

"We'll keep going,"

she whispered. "We'll protect her, no matter what."

The garden fell quiet under the soft glow of evening. Ruby's mind buzzed with possibilities, interventions, and strategies. She was small, fragile, a ten-year-old orphan in a world of magic and danger—but she had power, allies, and the one advantage the System could never anticipate: her mind, free and untraceable.

And with that freedom, she would become the hidden force that Angelica—and perhaps the entire otome world—so desperately needed.

The creatures chirped softly around her, tails and wings flicking in quiet celebration. Ruby's chest tightened with purpose. She was ready.

The hidden guardian had earned her trust—and the game had only just begun.
