Chapter 13 - The puppets blade - chapter 13

The storm had not stopped.

Rain continued to fall over the palace grounds, turning the garden paths into dark ribbons of wet stone.

The lanterns flickered under the wind, casting long trembling shadows across the hedges.

Deep within the forest beyond the palace walls, Ruby crouched beneath the roots of a massive tree.

She had moved far from the palace after the System scans grew stronger.

But even here, she could still feel it.

The invisible pressure.

The System was still searching.

Ruby hugged her knees quietly.

The magical creatures rested around her—some perched on branches, others curled against the roots.

Yet none of them were truly sleeping.

They were listening.

Watching.

Waiting.

The silver creature suddenly lifted its head.

Its ears twitched sharply.

Ruby looked up immediately.

"What is it?"

The creature chirped once, urgently.

Movement.

Not far away.

Ruby slowly rose to her feet.

The forest around the palace was normally quiet at night. Only the soft sounds of insects and rustling leaves filled the darkness.

But tonight—

Footsteps echoed faintly through the trees.

Someone was approaching.

Ruby slipped behind the thick trunk of the tree, melting into shadow.

The creatures scattered silently into the branches above.

Through the rain and darkness, two figures slowly emerged along the narrow forest path.

Ruby's eyes widened.

Angelica.

And the nobleman from earlier.

The suspicious one.

Ruby frowned.

Why are they here?

Neither of them should be in the forest at this hour.

Angelica walked ahead silently, her pale dress damp from the rain.

Her posture was perfect as always.

Elegant.

Graceful.

Empty.

The nobleman followed a few steps behind, holding a lantern.

His expression was tense.

"Lady Angelica,"

he said carefully.

Angelica stopped walking.

The forest fell silent.

"I… must ask you something,"

the nobleman continued.

Ruby leaned forward slightly from her hiding place.

This wasn't part of the game.

The nobleman took a breath.

"…Have you noticed something strange lately?"

Angelica slowly turned toward him.

Her eyes were calm.

Too calm.

"What do you mean?"

she asked politely.

The nobleman hesitated.

"…It's hard to explain."

He rubbed his temple.

"Sometimes it feels like everyone in the palace is… acting."

Ruby's heart skipped.

He knew.

Not everything.

But enough.

The nobleman stepped closer.

"And you most of all, Lady Angelica."

The rain grew heavier around them.

Angelica's expression didn't change.

"You must be mistaken."

The nobleman shook his head.

"No."

His voice became firmer.

"I've watched you carefully these past few days."

Ruby held her breath.

"You move perfectly," he said slowly.

"You say the exact words everyone expects."

His eyes darkened.

"But it feels wrong."

Angelica remained silent.

The nobleman lowered his voice.

"…It feels like you're being controlled."

Ruby's chest tightened.

For a brief moment—

Angelica's eyes flickered.

A tiny crack in the perfect mask.

The real Angelica was still inside.

Fighting.

But then—

The System reacted.

Ruby felt the pulse instantly.

A violent surge of artificial mana exploded from Angelica's body.

Her head tilted slightly.

And her smile changed.

Cold.

Mechanical.

Ruby's stomach dropped.

"Oh no…"

Angelica's voice was no longer gentle.

"You have noticed too much."

The nobleman froze.

"What…?"

Before he could react—

Angelica's hand moved.

Faster than human eyes could follow.

A blade flashed in the darkness.

Ruby's breath caught.

Where did that weapon come from?

The blade plunged forward.

Straight into the nobleman's chest.

The forest fell silent.

The lantern slipped from his hand, crashing onto the wet ground.

The nobleman staggered backward.

Shock filled his eyes.

"Y… you…"

Angelica pulled the blade free.

Blood stained the rain-soaked leaves.

Ruby's hands trembled.

The nobleman collapsed onto the forest floor.

His breathing became weak.

Slow.

Then stopped.

The rain washed silently over his still body.

Angelica stood above him without emotion.

The blade in her hand glowed faintly with unnatural mana.

Ruby felt a chill crawl down her spine.

That weapon…

Something about it felt wrong.

Angelica looked down at the blade briefly.

Then the System released its control.

Her eyes cleared.

The real Angelica returned.

For a single horrifying moment—

She saw the body at her feet.

Her lips trembled.

"No…"

The blade slipped from her hand.

"I… didn't…"

Tears welled in her eyes.

But the System reacted instantly again.

Her expression froze.

The emotions vanished.

Angelica turned away from the body and walked back toward the palace.

Leaving the forest silent behind her.

Ruby remained hidden in the shadows long after she disappeared.

Her chest felt tight.

The magical creatures slowly descended from the branches.

One of them approached the fallen nobleman.

The emerald creature sniffed the glowing blade.

Then it froze.

Its eyes widened.

Ruby stepped closer carefully.

"What is it?"

The creature chirped urgently.

Confused.

The mana on the blade was familiar.

Ruby knelt beside the weapon.

Her eyes widened.

"…Angelica."

Faint traces of Angelica's mana clung to the blade.

But something was wrong.

The mana didn't feel natural.

It felt forced.

As if it had been used without her will.

The creatures chirped nervously.

They recognized the mana.

But they knew Angelica hadn't truly done it.

Ruby clenched her fists.

"The System made her do it."

The realization sent a chill through her entire body.

The System wasn't just controlling conversations anymore.

It was willing to kill.

Anyone who threatened its control would be eliminated.

Ruby looked at the nobleman's body.

He had been close to discovering the truth.

And the System removed him immediately.

Her chest tightened.

"If it finds me…"

She didn't finish the thought.

The forest wind rustled through the trees.

Ruby slowly stood.

The creatures gathered around her again.

Their glowing eyes reflected fear.

And anger.

Ruby looked toward the distant palace lights.

Angelica was still trapped inside that prison.

Forced to hurt people against her will.

Ruby's voice was quiet.

But filled with determination.

"I won't let it keep doing this."

The rain began to slow.

But deep within the palace—

The System was already reacting again.

Because the nobleman's death had created something dangerous.

A deviation.

A flaw in the story.

Inside the invisible System interface, warning symbols flashed rapidly.

[Critical Story Disruption Detected.]

[Narrative Instability Rising.]

Then a new command appeared.

Cold.

Merciless.

[Locate Anomaly Immediately.]

Back in the forest, Ruby suddenly shivered.

The System's presence surged stronger than ever before.

And this time

It wasn't just searching.

It was hunting.
