To Salvar's disappointment, Skyler reacted nothing like he wanted.
"Spiritual clarity?" Skyler repeated.
Of all the available words in that sentence, he had picked those two.
"Does going to the bathroom at 2 a.m. for Milo bring spiritual clarity?" Skyler continued with the energy of someone genuinely curious about this. "Does it do that for you?"
Salvar recalibrated.
"Then why are you working as my bodyguard despite everything?"
"Because I signed a contract."
"When?"
"17th October. Official start date was the 19th."
"Where were you," Salvar asked, keeping his voice even, "when I was in the bar?"
Skyler looked at him for a moment without changing expression.
"Near the area where you were dancing," he replied. "I saw you vomit on your friend. Before I could get to you, the other one came and handled it."
Salvar said nothing.
He let the silence ask the next question for him.
He wanted an answer to the question he didn't know how to ask.
