Salvar lay on the bed completely sandwiched. Milo was on top of him, and Xavier was beside him with one leg thrown across both of them like a small territorial flag.
Skyler opened the door to Salvar's room, stopped, and stared for a moment before moving to rescue him.
"They got bored after TV," Skyler said as he helped Salvar out. "They asked me to take them to the playground, but after your with the creep from this morning, I didn't want to risk it."
He paused. "Milo started whining and came to complain to you. I think they saw you sleeping and just stayed."
He helped Salvar out from underneath the children with the careful precision of someone removing a Jenga piece from a critical position.
Milo didn't move.
Xavier didn't move.
Both of them continued sleeping with the deep unconsciousness of people who had made their decisions and were at peace with them.
Salvar stood and assessed himself.
