Out of everything available to them, Skyler made roasted broccoli and half-boiled eggs.
This was a choice he had made deliberately and without apology.
Milo's smile performed a rapid descent the moment the plate arrived in front of him.
"Broccoli?" He looked at it in horror. "Eww."
Xavier, beside him, approached the same plate with a completely different framework.
"Is it better than pizza?"
"Very much," Skyler said. "It contains fiber, vitamin C, potassium, antioxidants, and supports healthy digestion," he added, as supplementary evidence for his conclusion.
Xavier listened enthusiastically.
Then he began eating.
No complaints.
No visible reaction like Milo.
Simply the mechanical processing of something that had been determined to be correct.
Milo looked at him.
It was the look of someone whose closest companion had just crossed a line Milo had not known existed until it was crossed.
