Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 — The Town Where Petals Fall

Morning came quietly.

The rain from last night had stopped, leaving the world washed and fresh, as if the sky had gently cleaned everything while everyone slept.

But Haruki had barely slept at all.

He opened his eyes slowly, staring at the pale ceiling of his room. His body felt heavy, like he had been carrying something all night.

The argument from downstairs still echoed faintly in his mind.

Voices.

Shouting.

Silence.

He rubbed his eyes and sat up on the bed, his hair slightly messy. For a moment he simply sat there, unmoving, as if gathering the strength to start the day.

Then his gaze drifted toward the window.

Haruki stood and walked toward it.

When he opened the curtain, soft morning light slipped into the room. The sky had cleared into a gentle blue, and the streets outside still glistened from the rain.

The air looked clean.

Fresh.

Haruki unlocked the window and pushed it open.

A cool breeze entered the room, carrying the faint scent of wet earth and trees.

He took a slow, deep breath.

For the first time since last night, his shoulders relaxed slightly.

"I love this quiet rain…"

he murmured softly.

"…and the smell of the world after it."

For a moment he simply stood there, breathing in the morning air, letting the calm of the outside world fill the emptiness inside him.

Then he turned around.

His eyes fell on the room behind him.

Boxes.

Half-empty shelves.

Bare walls.

The room looked unfamiliar now, like it no longer belonged to him.

Haruki realized something.

This was his last morning here.

After today…

He would never see this room again.

The thought made him fall silent.

Not sad.

Not happy.

Just… quiet.

After a moment, he began his morning routine. Washing his face, brushing his teeth, getting dressed. Everything felt automatic, like movements he had done a thousand times before.

When he came back to the room, he started packing the remaining things.

Most of the boxes were already sealed and stacked neatly by the door. Only a few books and small objects remained.

One by one, he placed them into the last box.

Soon, the room was almost empty.

Haruki carried the box downstairs.

Breakfast was already waiting on the table.

But the atmosphere inside the house felt different.

Heavy.

His parents were already sitting there.

Neither of them spoke.

Neither of them looked at each other.

Haruki quietly sat down and began eating.

The only sounds in the room were the faint clinking of dishes and the ticking of a wall clock.

No one said a word.

When he finished, Haruki stood up silently and returned upstairs.

The room was almost completely empty now.

He stood in the middle of it for a moment, looking around.

This place had once held his everyday life.

Now it was nothing more than four quiet walls.

Haruki picked up the last small box and carried it downstairs.

Everything was ready.

Everything was gone.

But before leaving, he walked back upstairs one last time.

Slowly, he stepped toward the window.

His eyes searched the street below.

He was looking for something.

The small kitten from last night.

The streetlight.

The curb.

But the kitten wasn't there.

The sidewalk was empty.

For a moment Haruki just stared.

Then a small, almost invisible smile appeared on his face.

"Guess you made it," he whispered quietly.

He closed the window.

Locked the door.

And left the room for the final time.

---

A taxi carried them toward the train station.

Haruki sat by the window, watching the familiar streets pass by.

His house slowly disappeared behind them.

Then the school building appeared for a moment in the distance.

He looked at it without much emotion.

Most of the memories there weren't very good.

Still…

a small thought formed in his mind.

Maybe… the next town will be different.

Soon they arrived at the station.

The train journey began.

At first the view outside was nothing but tall buildings, crowded streets, and endless city blocks.

Haruki leaned his head against the window, watching them pass.

His thoughts wandered.

Another school.

Another classroom.

Another introduction.

"Hello, my name is Haruki…"

The same routine.

Again.

And again.

But after some time, the buildings slowly disappeared.

The city faded away.

The scenery began to change.

Wide green fields stretched across the land.

Distant mountains rose toward the sky like quiet giants watching over the earth.

Haruki straightened slightly in his seat.

His eyes followed the mountains as the train curved along the tracks.

And then—

Beyond those mountains…

he saw it.

A small town resting peacefully in the valley.

Sakuragawa.

The town looked calm and untouched, surrounded by nature.

Even from a distance, soft pink colors could be seen across the streets.

Cherry blossom trees.

Haruki felt something stir inside him.

A small spark of excitement he hadn't felt in a long time.

---

When they arrived, the air felt different.

Cleaner.

Lighter.

The town was quiet, its streets lined with old houses and rows of sakura trees swaying gently in the breeze.

Petals drifted through the air like soft pink snow.

After the crowded city, the peaceful atmosphere felt almost unreal.

Haruki looked around slowly.

For the first time in a while…

he felt something close to comfort.

Their new house was located near a large garden.

By the afternoon, most of the moving boxes had been placed inside.

The house was still messy with unpacked things, but Haruki didn't stay long.

Instead, he decided to explore.

He stepped outside and began walking through the town.

Small streets stretched between quiet homes.

Wooden fences.

Old lanterns.

Flower gardens.

Everywhere he looked, nature seemed to breathe softly through the town.

Eventually, Haruki reached the large garden near his house.

It was bigger than he expected.

A small lake rested in the center, its surface reflecting the golden light of the afternoon sun.

The wind moved gently through the trees.

For a moment, everything felt peaceful.

Then suddenly—

A stronger gust of wind swept across the garden.

Cherry blossom petals rose into the air like a pink storm.

Haruki turned his head.

On the other side of the lake…

beneath a row of cherry blossom trees…

someone was standing there.

A girl.

Her long hair moved softly with the wind.

Cherry blossom petals drifted around her, falling slowly onto her shoulders.

She was looking up at the sky.

Quiet.

Still.

For a strange moment, everything felt as if it had slowed down.

The wind.

The falling petals.

The sunlight touching the water.

Everything moved like a quiet dream, and somehow the world looked even more beautiful in that moment.

It almost looked like the entire scenery existed just for her.

Like the sakura trees themselves were admiring her presence.

Haruki stopped walking.

He didn't know why.

But he couldn't look away.

Something about the scene felt… different.

New.

Unfamiliar.

His heart beat slightly faster.

Then—

the girl slowly lowered her gaze.

For a brief moment, her eyes met Haruki's across the lake.

The wind calmed.

Petals slowly settled back onto the ground.

And Haruki stood quietly there.

Watching.

A thought slipped into his mind.

Who is that?
