Chapter 21 - Threads of deception - chapter 21

The orphanage never truly slept, not when shadows lingered behind every corner and every step echoed louder than expected.

Ostina moved like a whisper through the halls, small and fragile, her black hair brushing the walls as she went. Her shards of dark magic hovered softly around her fingers, invisible to any observer, attuned to her slightest thought.

Sister Elara had begun to shadow her more closely now. Not openly, not in a way the other nuns would notice, but always at the edges, like a predator testing its prey.

Ostina could feel the careful precision of her gaze in the subtle shifts of the hall's energy:

the slight pause of footsteps behind her,

the faint tilt of a head, the way her shadow stretched differently when she lingered too long.

Ostina's teal eyes flicked from corner to corner, mentally mapping every patrol pattern, every favored inspection spot, every blind spot.

She had cataloged days of observations into a careful lattice of probabilities:

which hallways Elara favored

, how long she lingered in certain rooms,

and where her attention faltered.

But observation alone wasn't enough. Today, Ostina needed to experiment with subtle misdirection—false trails that would occupy Elara's sharp mind without revealing the source.

The first trial was in the laundry room.

A pile of folded sheets teetered precariously on the edge of a counter. Ostina's shards nudged it slightly, causing a sheet to slide down and land perfectly on the floor. Elara's eyes flicked immediately to the movement, her lips pressing together as if calculating the odds. She muttered something under her breath:

Too convenient…

but there was no proof. Ostina pressed herself flat against the wall, letting the tiny shift appear accidental, her heart steady.

Next came the chapel. Ostina noticed a candle had been left slightly askew on the altar.

Rather than correcting it perfectly, she allowed her shard to tilt it subtly—just enough for Elara to notice, but not enough to suggest manipulation. The nun's sharp eyes lingered, puzzling over it, then shook her head and moved on.

Ostina exhaled softly. A small success: Elara's attention was caught, yet nothing concrete was discovered.

The courtyard presented a more intricate challenge. Rain had pooled near a patch of young flowers, threatening to damage the saplings. Ostina traced threads of water and soil mana, redirecting the flow so it seemed natural. A falling leaf landed near Elara's feet, a subtle movement caused by her shard of wind.

The nun's gaze followed it instinctively, searching for a cause. She frowned, muttered, and moved on—but her attention had been occupied long enough for Ostina to pass undetected.

Hours passed like this, a delicate dance of observation, misdirection, and near misses.

Ostina tested the limits of her escape routes under direct scrutiny, pressing herself into hidden nooks beneath stairwells, sliding along narrow beams, and moving through crawlspaces no adult could fit.

Each passage was reinforced with her magic, every floorboard and loose tile accounted for.

By late afternoon, she began more subtle experiments. A broom leaned too close to a wall, ready to fall.

She nudged it just slightly, letting it teeter, catching Elara's attention without tipping over.

A small puddle glimmered in the kitchen; she adjusted its shape with barely perceptible waves, prompting Elara to step around it and frown.

Every act was designed to occupy the nun's mind while revealing nothing of the orchestrator.

Ostina paused in her dormitory, watching Elara pass by the hallway outside. She considered how her small actions—tiny disturbances, carefully controlled—were guiding Elara's attention like invisible threads.

Each misdirection reinforced the perception that these events were coincidences, nothing more, while allowing Ostina to freely practice her escape routes under the watchful eye of someone who could otherwise have traced her movements.

Her mind cataloged everything:

Which objects caught Elara's attention most readily.

How long her gaze lingered before moving on.

Which areas she was drawn to instinctively and which she ignored.

Every pattern was a new thread in a growing web.

Every reaction became a tool, a way to predict Elara's movements, and a shield to conceal her true plans.

By evening, Ostina tested a final experiment. She created a subtle "accident" in the storage room:

a small crate shifted, brushing against another and producing a soft clatter. Elara's head snapped toward it, lips pressing together, frown deepening. She moved closer, carefully inspecting the area. Ostina remained perfectly still, hidden behind a narrow gap in the shelving. The crate fell no further than she had intended.

The nun sighed, muttered something about "carelessness," and moved on.

Ostina allowed herself a quiet, triumphant smile.

The experiment had worked perfectly. She had created distraction, drawn attention, and misled Sister Elara—without revealing herself. Her escape routes remained secure, her position untraceable.

Curled beneath her blanket later, Ostina reflected on the day. She had pushed her limits, tested her control under direct observation, and refined her strategies. Each careful manipulation, each invisible thread, each subtle misdirection reinforced her confidence.

She is sharp, perceptive, and dangerous…

but she is not infallible. She can see shadows, notice patterns, but she cannot see me.

The orphanage was alive with secrets, and Ostina had learned to navigate every corner, every shadow, every heartbeat.

She was small, fragile, and unnoticed—but within that seeming weakness, she was untouchable.

And the game with Sister Elara had only just begun.
