Chapter 20 - A narrowed miss - chapter 20

The orphanage was unusually quiet that afternoon.

Children had been sent outside to play, and the nuns were busy with chores. Ostina moved carefully along the upper hallway, her small frame pressed against the wall, shards of dark magic hovering invisibly around her fingers.

She was testing a new route today, one that bypassed the main stairwell entirely, a shortcut she had mapped but never fully rehearsed under direct observation. Her pulse was steady, her mind calculating every step.

A tray clattered in the kitchen below—a minor accident she had orchestrated earlier. Ostina froze. The sound drew Sister Elara's attention immediately.

The nun's sharp eyes scanned upward, directly toward Ostina's hidden position along the balcony railing.

Time slowed.

Ostina's shards flickered to life, subtle threads nudging shadows, curtains, and a loose panel in the wall. A draft caused a small curtain to sway near the far end of the hall. Elara's gaze shifted instinctively, drawn to the movement.

A single breath.

Ostina inched forward, each step deliberate, silent, the floorboards beneath her magically reinforced. She reached a narrow ledge along the balcony, a hidden passage she had tested before. A weak tile threatened to betray her, but a shard of shadow shifted it slightly, preventing a creak.

Elara's frown deepened. She paused, scanning the hallways, muttering under her breath. Ostina pressed herself further into the shadows, heart racing—but calm. Every thread of mana, every shard of shadow, every hidden hollow worked in harmony.

The next moment was critical. A loose broom fell from a nearby closet, brushing against the floor with a loud scrape. Elara's head snapped in that direction, eyes narrowing.

Ostina's shards reacted instantly. A whisper of wind redirected the broom harmlessly against the wall, as if a passing child had brushed it aside.

Elara's eyes followed the broom for a heartbeat, then, shaking her head, she moved on.

Ostina exhaled softly, tiny muscles relaxing. The near-miss had passed—but the lesson was clear. Her escape routes were solid, but the orphanage was alive with unpredictable variables, and Elara was no ordinary observer.

She pressed herself into a hidden nook beneath a stairwell, watching the nun walk past.

Her shards hovered briefly, confirming the passage clear. She notices patterns… but she cannot yet trace the source. Not yet.

By evening, Ostina had retraced her steps, testing each hidden route, each shadowed passage, and each weak floorboard.

Every close call sharpened her control, every heartbeat reinforced the knowledge that even a small misstep could be dangerous.

Curling beneath her blanket later, she allowed herself a faint, triumphant smile. The labyrinth is mine, even under observation. One day, she will see the threads—but that day is not today.

The orphanage hummed softly around her, unaware that its smallest,

weakest child had danced through its corridors like a ghost, surviving, testing, and mastering every hidden path.
