Chapter 31 - A Dangerous Hint

The first notes drifted softly through the hidden room.

Elena didn't play a full piece.

Just a simple melody, quiet and thoughtful, the kind that formed when her fingers moved before her mind decided what to say.

The sound filled the small space between the walls and the curtains.

Adrian didn't interrupt.

He leaned against the doorway with his arms loosely crossed, watching her the same way he had years ago in the academy music hall—silent, patient, as if the music mattered more than anything else in the room.

After a minute, Elena stopped.

The final note faded into the air.

She glanced over her shoulder.

"You're doing it again."

Adrian's voice was calm.

"Doing what?"

"That thing where you listen like the world just paused."

He didn't deny it.

"You make it easy."

Elena turned slightly on the piano bench.

"That's a strange compliment."

"It's the truth."

She studied him for a moment.

There was something different in his expression tonight.

Something quieter… but heavier too.

"You haven't played in years, have you?" she asked.

"No."

"Not even once?"

"No."

Elena rested her hands lightly on the keys.

"That's a shame."

Adrian didn't move.

"My father disagrees."

She frowned slightly.

"What does he have to do with it?"

Adrian looked toward the window behind her.

"Everything."

Elena watched him carefully.

"You said earlier that your world wasn't gentle."

"It isn't."

"And your father built that world."

"Yes."

There was no hesitation in his answer.

Elena turned fully toward him now.

"So he's the reason you stopped playing?"

Adrian was quiet for a moment.

Then he said,

"He believes music makes people weak."

Elena blinked.

"That's ridiculous."

Adrian almost smiled.

"I agree."

"Then why listen to him?"

Adrian's gaze returned to her.

"Because when you grow up in a world like mine, you learn quickly which battles are worth fighting."

Elena studied his face.

"And music wasn't one of them?"

"It was," he said quietly.

"But not at the time."

The honesty in his voice made her pause.

She turned back to the piano and played another soft chord.

"Your father sounds intimidating."

"That's a polite word."

"And the impolite one?"

"Dangerous."

Elena stopped playing.

She looked at him again.

"You're serious."

"Yes."

Something about the calm way he said it made the room feel slightly colder.

Elena leaned back from the piano.

"So the rumors back at the academy…"

"Some of them were true."

"That your family controls half the city?"

"Less than half."

She stared at him.

"That was a joke, right?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Which somehow made it worse.

Elena let out a small laugh.

"I'm starting to think I should've asked more questions years ago."

"You probably should have."

"Why didn't you tell me any of this?"

Adrian stepped further into the room.

The candlelight from the dining area cast a soft glow behind him.

"Because you looked at me differently than everyone else."

Elena frowned.

"That's not a bad thing."

"It is when you know the truth will change it."

She held his gaze.

"And you think it will?"

Adrian didn't answer right away.

Instead, he glanced briefly toward the closed door of the private room.

Then back at her.

"My world is complicated, Elena."

"I figured that out."

"It's also dangerous."

The word lingered in the quiet space.

Elena's fingers rested lightly on the piano keys again.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it matters."

She looked up at him.

"Are you warning me?"

Adrian's expression remained unreadable.

"Yes."

"About what?"

A faint sound echoed from somewhere beyond the dining room.

Footsteps in the hallway outside.

Adrian's attention shifted instantly.

The relaxed posture he had been holding disappeared.

His shoulders straightened slightly, his gaze sharpening toward the door.

Elena noticed the change immediately.

"What is it?"

Adrian didn't answer for a second.

He was listening.

Carefully.

Then he looked back at her.

"Nothing."

But the way he said it wasn't convincing.

Elena watched him closely.

"You're lying."

Adrian walked toward the door leading back to the dining room.

"It's probably nothing."

"Adrian."

He paused.

Then said quietly,

"I told you earlier that my world isn't gentle."

Elena stood slowly from the piano bench.

"And now?"

He opened the door slightly and looked out into the hallway.

His voice was calm, but the meaning behind it was clear.

"Now you're starting to see why."
